** ANOTHER FRIGHTENING READ...don't be intimidated by the length!**

Another story, based on true events. The Phonecall Being 16 I had to earn my money somehow. So I babysat. It was a real pain in the neck, only because in my neighbourhood, each parent would spend many wonderful hours, late at night gambling downtown or eating at a fancy resteraunt. I had just gotten a call from five doors down, Mrs. Callaway. She needed me to babysit her two kids Jake and Spencer for a little over four hours. She had an important dinner meeting with her husband that could get them a generous pay raise. Sighing with uncertainty (as it was my one and only Saturday night), I had told her I would, just because I needed a few extra bucks, and the Callaways' did pay quite well. So I began to pack for the night, bringing my Physics book and some other homework that I had to complete by Monday. Jake and Spencer were two of the most tranquil kids I have ever met; both sat easily in front of the TV or reading, sometimes venturing over to try out some computer games. I knew it was going to be a slow night with the boys, from eight to around one - one-thirtyish. The kids usually went to bed around ten or so, being that their parents let them stay up and watch Saturday night television. I sighed, and began to walk over to their house. It was a clear moonless night, dark and silent. The streets of the neighbourhood were unmoving and ominious, the only sound to be heard was a distant police siren or airplane coming in overhead. As I rounded the corner to the Callaway's I noticed their back gate ajar. I closed it for them, thinking Jake or Spencer had left it open while out back. It wasn't safe to leave gates or doors unlocked around here, especially when it was late out. I was about to knock on the door, when I realized there was a sticky pinned to it. Jade, come on in. The boys are in the living room, and they expect you. Sorry we had to leave earlier, should be back around one. I opened the door, and stepped in. A cold gust of air conditioning and the smell of popcorn filled my nose. "Jake? Spencer? Where are you guys?" "Jade the living room," I heard Spencer say quietly. They were propped up on the couch in total darkness, except for the glow of the nearby TV. A bowl of popcorn was split between the two, and I noticed they were watching a horror film. "You know you aren't supposed to watch that, right?" I smirked at Jake, but he didn't return the favor. "Sorry," said Spencer quietly and flipped the channel without enthusiasm. The night carried on like this, slow and uneventful. A few times I thought I heard a door shut upstairs, but the windows were open, and I wasn't too concerned. It was 10:15 when the phone rang. I got up, walked to the kitchen and picked up the cordless. "Hello?" I said. The other line was silent for a minute, then this insane, horrible laughter filled the telephone. It was grotesque how happy the other person was on the other line, and then it fell dead. "Who was it?" asked Jake, holding up a pillow. "No one, " I said, and sat back down, eating more popcorn. 10:45. The phone rang again. I silently picked it up. "Hello?" I said again in a nervous voice. Suddenly more laughter filled the phone followed by a voice stating that he was coming soon. "What?" I asked, but he had hung up. The night was still young. 11:30. Another ringing. I knew it was the same person before I even picked up the phone. "Who are you!" I demanded into the reciever. "[ Laughter] A few more minutes [ Laughter ]," I had no time to reply. Spencer asked if it was the same person. I told him it was, and the wind began to pick up, rattling the windows. I called the police and told them what had happened. "Jade, if he calls back, redial the station. We can trace the call," I replied 'OK' and hung up knowing the strange man would call back again. A half an hour passed by with no call. I eased up, and the boys told me they were ready to go to bed. I nodded, and began to walk to the hall when the phone rang. I froze, my hands getting sweaty. Slowly I trekked back to pick it up, this time not saying anything in the reciever. I felt my heart jump when the laughter began. Insane, menical laughter. The man said he was almost there when I hung up and dialed the police. The boys followed me. "Hold on Jade, we're tracing it." I waited a few moments when the operator came back on. "You need to get out of the house NOW. The call was made from upstairs," I grabbed the boys and pulled them to the front door, when I noticed a door open upstairs. A man I had never seen before slowly walked down the stairs, a strange ecstatic grin on his face, a small knife in his left hand... I ran with the kids outside, and the police arrived moments later. The man was arrested. After that night I never babysat that late again. It had turned out the man was an escaped convict, the one mentioned three nights ago who escaped from the West Asylum... I was disbeliefed knowing there was a killer upstairs this entire time. A few weeks later, the Callaways moved. From the day forward their house has stood as a landmark to true insanity... [Edited on 9/11/2005]
