They've unwillingly subscribed to receive a monthly delivery package containing Maggie's shyte, and while it's established that there are 2 sides to humanity's mindset the only side that's actually developed is the one that's screaming "FECK THE ELITES!" so we end up being alienated (heh heh heh) from humanity and rooting for the Elites who were right all along.
