HALO 3 two disks

Im not to sure if this has been discussed but, I think that to optimize the amount of sweet stuff in HALO 3 there should be two seperate discs. A Halo 3 campaigne disc and a seperate multiplayer one. Just my thoughts...

  • Why would you have pointless inconvenience? This is probably the most retarded thing that I've heard, and I've heard a lot of retarded things in the year that this forum has been out.

  • Wouldn't it be better just to have everything on one single disk? :|

  • Impossible. Mainly because that would suck and secondly because if you look at the pics for the legendary edition it fits 3 cases (H1, H2, and H3)

  • Um.. what would the point be.. You would then have to be constantly switching and loading disks.. Why not just have it on one disk LOL....

  • That kind of suggestion might have been great were the game in the early development stages. Maybe putting campaign and multiplayer on different disks would allow for more eye candy or a longer campaign, but at this point, its not gonna happen.

  •
Posted by: XXXTheChadXXX How is it retarded? Pointless? Or inconvient?
Inconvenient because you have to switch between the two disks every time you want to stop playing multiplayer or campaign and switch over. Pointless because both will be able to fit on one disk. Retarded for both of those reasons.

  • This is not new its been a long since people have been asking and giving the idea for a 2 disk halo 3 because of the size and the long game in hours of gameplay so it could be done. because actually 9gbs is really not a lot of space to have a game now with the blu ray and hd-dvd.... But the compression technology is advancing too so... they can compress things to a very very small amount of mb and still look quite amazing ... so i dont know i dont worry to much for it i would like it if bring double sountrack for me spanish and english because i hate how its gets translated to spanish and it also looses a lot of charm...

  • I once thought they should put mutiplayer on one disc and single player on another to make the campaign longer but it wouldn't work with co op campaign and it would be annoying switching discs [Edited on 05.30.2007 12:44 AM PDT]

  • You do realise that the size of the game is dictated by the amount of work they can do, not how many discs they can fit in the box? I'm just saying, there's no point to saying 'make the game on two discs' because that decision isn't going to suddenly double their resources and time.

  • Wow the people in this thread are really retarded. How is it a problem to be switching from single player to multiplayer disc? If you want to play the multiplayer you just do so and think about it ,multiplayer maps would have a full 9GB all to themselves. Wich means they could look a hell of alot better then they do now and we could have a whole lot more and large maps. Also single player can be better looking and longer. How is that not good? And for Co-op you would just use the single player disc. Halo3 imo should be on 3 or 4 DVd's if you ask me. 3 DvD's for the single player campaign and 1 for multiplayer. That way bungie dont have any excuses anymore to make the game short or make it look like crap. They have all the disk space they could need to make the best fps ever. And isnt that what we all want. Well you all probably not ,you probably want another -blam!- halo2 ---> halo 2.5 ,well I dont and neither does the Topic starter.

  •
Posted by: Galva Wow the people in this thread are really retarded. How is it a problem to be switching from single player to multiplayer disc?
Uh, you have to stand up. Find your Halo 3 case. Get out the MP disc. Walk over to your 360. Press eject button. Wait a second. Take out the campaign disc. Put the MP disc in. Close the disc tray. Put the MP disc back in the case. Walk back over to your seat. Sit down. And then wait while it loads up. Thats a hell of problem when you could just be pressing a few buttons to switch over.
If you want to play the multiplayer you just do so and think about it ,multiplayer maps would have a full 9GB all to themselves.
Wrong. They'd have to duplicate the entire game engine. All the weapons and vehicle models etc, on that second disc. Plus some of the 9GB is put aside for rating and parental control information.
Wich means they could look a hell of alot better then they do now
Wrong again. Secondary storage medium size has very little to do with how good the game looks. The game is still limited by the RAM and GPU capabilites as to how good it looks. As well as the developer's goals to go either for SCALE (as bungie is doing) or detail (gow) and their own art direction.
and we could have a whole lot more and large maps.
You could fit more onto the disc, but that doesn't mean they'd be any better. Proably worse in fact. They only have a limited amount of time and resources. Do they say: "lets make 10 awesome MP maps". Or say: "Lets make 30 MP maps because thats how many we need to fill the disc" Quality over quantity.
Also single player can be better looking
This has nothing to do with disc space. As I said.
and longer. How is that not good?
Because it would be crappyer overall. You could make a 1000 hour game, but you wouldn't have spent much time on each hour making it the best it could be woud you? The story Bungie has concocted is also finite. You can't just suddenly decide: "oh its too short, stick another level in there with loads of flood. And make it long." It breaks the experience. And means its not as good an experience as it could have been. You could make a 16 hour movie. Solid. Show it in cinemas and such. But would anyone watch a 16 hour film? Wouldn't it be better to break it up into a TV series. Or condense it down ino the most awesome bits and make it a 2 hour movie?
Halo3 imo should be on 3 or 4 DVd's if you ask me. 3 DvD's for the single player campaign and 1 for multiplayer.
No game these days needs that much space. Even Mass Effect (HUGE RPG from Bioware, x360) looks like its going to be able to fit on a single disc. Oblivion as able to fit on a single disc. Blue Dragon (the only 360 game that I know of which is on multiple discs) only does so because it has hours and hours of HD pre-rendered cinematics. Halo 3's cinematics are all real time, so theres no real need.
That way bungie dont have any excuses anymore to make the game short or make it look like crap.
Yes they would. They could say "Well, we wanted to make a slightly shorter, more awesome game, but Galva forced us to make it really long. So we didn't have enough time or resources spent on each level to make it good." And if you thinkg Halo 3 looks crap right now, you need to go get your eyes checked, seriously. Or get a better TV/monitor.
They have all the disk space they could need to make the best fps ever.
But to fill all that disc space with content takes a lot of time. And LOTS of money. Do you really want it postponed and to come out in 2013? Hell, then we won't even be having this discussion. HD DVD or Blu ray will be the standard by then. Maybe even HVD (holographic versitle disc) will. And people will be saying "well why can't they just make it multi-HDDVD/Multi-bluray disc? that would make it better!"
And isnt that what we all want.
No. I want the best Halo FPS ever. And since the last two were pretty freakin good anyways, this being the best Halo FPS would make it a stellar game in its own right.
Well you all probably not ,you probably want another -blam!- halo2 ---> halo 2.5 ,well I dont and neither does the Topic starter.
Uh, well Halo 1 wasn't really finished. So thats really only Halo 0.9. And Halo 2 was apparantly only halo 1.5. So its really Halo 1.4. And if this is 0.5 better than halo 2, then this must be Halo 1.9. We haven't even got to Halo 2.0 yet. Maybe Halo 4 will be that. ;) Now you can all go away.

I would rather get up to switch the disc than have to have paid $600 for my Xbox 360 with the HD-DVD drive. I did it for years with my PlayStation so I'm cool with it, if that's what needs to happen... this anger is silly. If there's a problem maybe we should all buy Halo 3 on PS3 which is on Blu-Ray....oh wait.

  • I DONT WANT 2 DISCS! I hate games where u are in the middle of playing and the START menu comes up and says "please insert disc 2" It really ticks me off! When I get into a game, it's like I fall into a coma. All of my body is concentrated on the game, and I lose control of my legs, my arms, and only my mind, my fingers and my eyes are alive. If that screen comes up, I'll probobly st there in my bean bag for 5 minutes, stare at the screen, and then finally ask my sister to swap discs. Who shares my feelings?

  • Apparently, a lot of people on here don't understand how multi-disk games tend to work. Most likely, _both_ disks will contain the same exact multiplayer portion. So you can play multiplayer off of either disk. However, the campaign will be split across both disks. That way you only ever have to switch disks once. Don't you think it would be a pain if you had to switch disks every time you wanted to play multiplayer?

I was *just* about to say that... :D Anyhow to elaborate, let's assume that the H3 beta is indicative of the size of the maps - that is to say around 300Mb each. Let's say 350Mb to be safe. With this, you could have twelve MP maps and still only take up 4.2Gb of data - or a single DVD layer. By duplicating the MP data and splitting SP, you can get 9Gb of campaign and 4.5Gb of multiplayer. Compare this with splitting MP and SP from each other where you can get 9Gb for each, at the expense of ease of use. Is being able to join multiplayer at any point worth 4.5Gb for maps? I'd imagine so since I doubt they even have time to make more maps to fill that space before release. Of course this is all speculation.

  • WORST. IDEA. EVER. This is like my Godfather Part II DVD, the movie is split into 2-DVDs with NO special features, halfway through they say "please insert disc 2". Absolutely retarded, like they couldn't fit it all on one disc? It's only 3 hours 20 minutes, LOTR Return of the King did it on one disc WITH special features. Sorry, it's just when there are 2 discs for no reason whatsoever other than to make you swap them out drives me crazy.

You are forgetting the game engine, character/weapon/vehicle models/animations, etc. and all the other code that is required to make the game work. The maps are part of this, but its not as easy as simply dividing it proportionally. Also, the Beta had the Theater and movie functions, which also take up space. And splitting the multiplayer maps would not work. Think back to Halo 2 when the map downloads came out. How many times did you see people with the "failed to load the map" or "map required" to play in multiplayer. If a map gets selected, that is on a different disc, then i would assume these same issues would pop up again. The only cure to this would be to have them fully loaded onto the harddrive (instead of being cached of a disc when the disc is loaded), which I don't think would happen.
