Ear cleaning?

How often, and how should I do it? I rarely clean them, and I use earbuds a lot. It's annoying to feel it stick up against the wax and see it come out on it... gross. How do I clean them? I heard Q-tips are unhealthy and pack it in.

Well, you can safely use Q-tips to swab the inside of your ear that surrounds the ear canal (not inserting it into your ear canal, 'cause that's not a great idea). You can also pour a few millilitres of low-percent (3% or something) hydrogen peroxide into your ear (including ear canal, unless the ear drum is ruptured or something, then that's really not good), and let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes, and then drain it out. If you do that I'd pull your hair back, if it's longish, 'cause peroxide bleaches hair.

The video above demonstrates what the doctor has to do for people who use Q-tips in their ears. Q-tips are extremely bad... don't use them! It's really easy to clean your ears more effectively, and you can read a book or play on your phone or something while you do it. Instead of a q-tip, tilt your head to the side and pour a half-teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide into one ear. Keep your head tilted for 15 minutes or so. You'll hear bubbling and popping -- that's normal. After 15 minutes, hold a paper towel up to your ear and let the hydrogen peroxide drain out. You'll see small bits of wax come out too. If you still feel like that ear is clogged up, do it again (usually not necessary). Then just tilt your head to the other side and do the exact same thing with the other ear. This is perfectly safe and easier than going to the doctor's office, where they do the exact same thing. Note, however, that wax is good for your ears, as it filters out dirt, bacteria, and other foreign particles, so don't clean your ears more than once or twice a week.

I always encourage people to light q-tips on fire, then use them to scrape all the wax out of their ears. Not because its effective or that I care for their well-being. Its not, and I totally don't. I say it because one day someone will believe me, try it, and post the results. I think that might amuse me.
