Question on the Forerunners [Possible Spoilers]

Now, if you haven't beaten Halo 4 yet, there may be some spoilers here. So stop reading. OK? As we learn in Halo 4, the Forerunners and Humans already made contact millenna ago and a war broke out. The Forerunners put us essentially back into the Stone Age. Now here's my question; is this something Bungie had already established in the Halo universe or is this something 343 added? I'm really sorry if this is a silly question, I don't know as much about Halo's overall storyline as I'd like to.

 •
Posted by: App L Sawz I think Bungie had probably thought about some of what the Forerunners might be, established some of the ground work, but I think it's safe to say that at least most of the work was done by the guys at 343 with the Forerunner saga of books and Halo 4.
Bungie originally planned to do a Halo 4 instead of Reach and got round to the concept stage where Isaac Hannaford drew his rendition of what was labelled a Promethean. You'll notice a number of similarities with 343i's Promethean Knights, mainly the weapons integrated into the armour and the stand-outish angular plating.
