"Affect" or "Effect"? How and when do you use them?

I really don't understand them. For example when I say: "The effect that eating sweets can be bad for your body" As apposed to saying "affect" Can someone help me understand?

 •
Posted by: catman6 Effect is more past tense. Affect is describing what something will do to something else. The Effect of the knife on the bread was two pieces. The knife had an affect on the bread by cutting it in two.
