I'm actually pretty excited that Valve is (sort of) getting into the market for consoles. I think this is the first step to a full fledged console with PC upgradability and quality. This is essentially that, but is still considered a PC from what I understand. But with the release of Steam Big Picture and the use of an HDMI capable television, this can basically be a console.
Thoughts?

At that price it's not going to do too well.

Why not just get an Alienware X51 or a gaming laptop and hook it up to your big screen? It's going to be weak as hell at that size [Edited on 01.08.2013 11:12 AM PST]

I don't know. I was expecting something, hm, bigger?
Posted by: catman6 At that price it's not going to do too well.
This. I'd rather just keep doing what I'm doing and using my TV as a monitor where I have steam set to go on [Edited on 01.08.2013 11:15 AM PST]

Coming from someone looking at buying pcs, this is a joke I would never buy an attempt at a console for steam only at 1000. This will be their only console because it will fail so hard.

But keep in mind, this is a VERY early prototype and will likely change specs. Also I think Valve would try to add some degree of customizability. And from the way the article reads, components will be able to be easily changed, which leads me to believe they may also be selling the shell with the most basic components inside for a reasonable and the customer could customize to their heart's content. And then the less tech savvy could buy the overpriced and hyped up version with "everything" included.

I'm pretty sure we remember how bad Sony did with the PS3 when it was that expensive.

Looks pretty weak; unsurprising. I'll reserve judgment but I'm not hopeful. Next-gen consoles will blow Steam Box out of the water, and that's even assuming that Valve can ever get this thing launched -- which they probably can't. Considering their inability to meet deadlines and actually launch product when it's just software, I can't see how they think they're ever going to succeed in the hardware space.

Their prices go down over the years, just like this will. A starting price of $499 isn't unreasonable.

No way I'm gonna spend that much.

Did I just see a $1000 price tag? For something that can only stream games?

If that releases at a significantly lower price and can run everything in the Steam library flawlessly then I'll buy one. Anything less and I may as well stick with what I've got.
