Does having a Christmas Tree in public really offend anyone???

I see this every year that people get offended that there is a Christmas Tree in like a town square, a public office, etc. It is now becoming more "politically correct" to say happy Holidays and saying "Merry Christmas" is becoming offensive. Isn't that a bit silly? It amazes me that people actually protest to have Christmas Trees removed from these places saying it offends them. How does a Tree offend you? •
Posted by: SonicJohn I'm an Atheist that celebrates Christmas purely out of tradition, and will say Merry Christmas. I think it's funny when people get offended by things. Being offended is fine, but trying to eliminate that which offends you is outrageously selfish.
This is sadly becoming the norm. More and more people protest Christmas in public view saying it offends their beliefs.

 • I don't care what anyone says, unless a christmas tree has religious ornaments, it is a completely secular object.

Some stores decided, of their own merit, to wish people Happy Holidays instead of saying Merry Christmas. For some reason people see this as an attack of Christmas by those stores. I think those people are stupid and are trying to make themselves the victim of an attack that's not happening.
>people getting offended at Merry Christmas >people want Happy Holidays Nope.avi
I've never actually seen that happen. Since stores are, generally, privately owned they can operate however they want in that regard. I take it you are one of those people that are trying to make themselves the victim of an attack that's not happening. Just so you know, my take on it is, if you say, "Merry Christmas" to someone that it offends them. -blam!- that person they should get over it. If someone says, "Happy Holidays" to you and it offends you. -blam!- you, you should get over it. [Edited on 11.30.2012 3:33 AM PST]

Heck, Christmas itself is becoming pretty secularized.

 •
Posted by: MyNameIsCharlie I don't think people are offended that there is a tree, just that there is ONLY a tree. Put up a Menorah or something too and people will calm down about the trees.
I'm wondering how that would actually work. There's also the issue of the window lickers complaining that one holiday item is bigger than the other, though.
Posted by: RaZorRyaN The main reason is the roots of Christmas. Most people these days dont believe in Jesus Christ, and considering that he is reason why we have Christmas people will be offended by anything that reminds them of Christmas. What people fail to realize however, is that this nation was founded on God, thus Christmas is technically our most important holiday as a nation. Im not saying that everybody should be christian, but scoffing at those who know the meaning of the holiday is rude, and dumb. Also, i dont see why people are offended by Christmas trees excluding the roots of Christmas. They are just pine trees with lights, cheap decorations, and in some cases food. It isnt anything to be butthurt about.
Didn't Christmas Trees become a tradition from Penguin rituals, initially? Yeah, I put penguin.

 •
Posted by: A 3 Legged Goat It's fine if you don't celebrate it but getting offended by somebody who does is ridiculous. It's definitely more considerate to say "Happy Holidays" though, and I don't think it has anything to do with politics.
• Because after all of humanity's technological and societal advancements, we still have people going 'Hey, you don't believe exactly what I do! And although it isn't hurting anyone but yourself, I'm going to harass you until you think what I do! Because I care SO MUCH about how other people whom I'll probably never talk to again live their lives!'

 •
Posted by: CultMiester4000 Christmas is the one thing religion did right. please don't piss on that in the name of Secularism or, in many cases, Atheism.
This. How someone can be opposed to the celebration of a holiday that promotes kindness and fellowship, inherantly good values no matter what belief or way of life one subscribes to, is beyond me.

 • i'd like to point out that over here in bally old England we have no problem with it being called Christmas, nor i might add, with nativities or carol singing or the rest of it. this is probably due to the place being traditionally Protestant so we just kinda go with it, but we never get controversies like this despite the obvious religious influences. we like to embrace tradition and have a massive hard-on for the old pagan festivals and customs, especially around Christmas. you guys just need to lighten up a little and enjoy the best part of the year; regardless of the religious influences. Christmas is the one thing religion did right. please don't piss on that in the name of Secularism or, in many cases, Atheism.

 •
Posted by: MC187 Churches are also in public view. I guess we should do something about that too. If you don't like it then vote for someone who will fight for what you want. Better yet, you should probably run for office and change it yourself. I can see a strong campaign being run on issues such as Christmas trees in public. Issues like that really have an impact on my quality of life.
There's a difference between in public view and on public property. No one cares if people put up decorations on their property that can be seen from public places.

 • I honestly think Christmas should not be regarded as a religious holiday anymore, instead as just a customary festivity. Makes everyone more happy.
