Destiny story connections to Halo... yeah yeah, don't poo poo me yet.

Sooooo, I know there was a ridiculous amount of speculation back in the day of Halo's connection to Marathon, and officially it has been stated repeatedly now that there is no connection (even though Alex Seropian at one point said Master Chief and the cyborg security officer from Marathon were the same guy as far as he's concerned, a lot has changed in the Halo universe since then), BUT there were certainly nods to Marathon in Halo and at least thematic connections and references as Bungie often do from game to game. So, the place I'm going with this, as the subject line would tip you off too, is Destiny's loose possible connections to Halo, or any of Bungie's other series. I'd guess there will at least likely be references and easter eggs referencing their previous work, but the place this Destiny story starts, is about 150 to 200 years after the years Halo would take place in, and the place Bungie left humanity at the end of Halo 3 sounds not TOO far off from where humanity is when Destiny picks up. Humanity driven back to Earth, and even a lot of Earth's population got taken out in Halo 3 when the Elites tried to cleanse the Flood landing in Africa. At the end of Halo 3 there's still seems to be a lot more people left than just one city on Earth, but in the 150 years difference, it's not too much of a stretch to think humanity could be driven down to that point. Now of course officially and legally this will definitely not be in the same universe as Halo, or anything at all connected to Halo as MS owns that and Destiny is owned by Bungie, but the way Bungie likes to tie their past works together, does anyone else think that the way Destiny's story seems to be starting is at least sort of thematically tied to the way Halo 3 ends? • Maybe, but you know... we're talking about SCI-Fi here. As broad and endless as the universe seems to be, every single sci fi example of entertainment has features or ideas that overlap. Its just inevitable that you can pull similarities between two things in different franchises. I mean, look at the mantis in halo 4. I show my mate and right off the bat he says it looks like one of the mechs from the third matrix movie... or avatar. In the same genre things tend to start looking similar [Edited on 11.27.2012 8:49 PM PST]

 • Of course, certainly, and Halo (and really any form of art in general) has a long history of borrowing ideas and and just coincidentally similarities, but when talking about two creations essentially by the same people, it's not TOO much of a stretch to look for some intended connections. Not saying that they are necessarily there, or intentional, but just putting forth the idea that they might be and seeing if anyone has any more to add to that I suppose.

 • I doubt that they'll be connected in any way plot-wise, but I have no doubt elements of the Haloverse will be expressed in Destiny's genes. Similar to the way a good chunk of Marathon made it into Halo.

Personally, I don't see a lot of similarities between how Halo ended and where Destiny takes place. I would understand if we are talking about the post-war state of the universe that we read about in Glasslands and Thursday war, where humanity's state isn't very good. But that's 343i's Halo, and as far as the end of Bungie's Halo is considered, Halo 3 didn't really have a lot about the state of humanity. I believe there will be Halo references in Destiny. But I don't think we will see similarities in the plot of the two games. At least personally, I don't see a very strong connection between how Halo 3 ended and how Destiny begins. Could I imagine that the post-Halo 3 universe could have ended up like the Destiny universe in 200 years? Yes, but it's a bit far fetched.

 • I'd rather it coincide with the Marathon universe (even though Marathon and Destiny pretty much take place at the same time). Halo is getting pretty tired for me.

 • I would say Destiny is going to be like one big reference/easter egg hub of Halo/Marathon and all that.

 •
Posted by: PlaystationHero9 It cant, this game is a multiplat, ps3 users like me have no idea about halo :(
Well you still can read the story of Halo here or follow some walktrough on Youtube, or even better play the game by yourself (wich i highly recommand). Back to the thread, i think the game itself will share some connections with Halo, but for now i feel much more Star Wars Style in it (Planet "Hoth-like", characters armors) with a touch of Steampunk aesthetic. I think the first teaser trailer will clairify your speculation.

 • I don't think Bungie can have references to the actual lore of Halo this time. After all: they don't own the rights to that series anymore. That being said, I do suspect there will be quite a few "eastereggs", recurring overall themes etc that can be traced back to Halo and Marathon. Just don't expect weapons etc to come back like they did between Marathon and Halo.

 • I wouldn't be surprised if we get the Superintendent as the Last City's AI or something similar, since Bungie held onto the copyright for him.

 • I'm no lawyer, but since Microsoft owns Halo I would think adding any references to Halo could cause issues.

That's no teller though; the Marathon mark isn't there either and Bungie own that. They DID own it though, unlike Halo. Maybe Microsoft purchased it from them. ODST 2?

 • Yeah, when the split happened they held onto the Superintendent. They cited it as the reason they could make and sell their own Superintendent merchandise through the Bungie store, but they don't have Halo merchandise made by themselves anymore, just links to purchase the stuff on Amazon.

I'm not saying they would directly reference anything to Halo, but that the story for their new game might just share some themes and ideas from Halo, and perhaps may loosely pick up in a world that is not TECHNICALLY where the Bungie made Halo games left off at the end of Halo 3, but could loosely be interpreted that way if you wanted to (but (150 years later if you were to go by the years given). The game and story wouldn't have to reference Halo at all or do anything that would infringe on MS's Halo copyright, just that humanity might start in a situation that would fit 150 years after where Halo 3 ended. Again, just an idea of course. [Edited on 11.28.2012 12:16 PM PST]
