The saddest thing in Halo

Real Quick: I've been playing Halo since 2001, and naturally as a child, I just thought of it as a pretty game with shooting. That was my mindset at age 11. As I matured however, I payed more attention to the story-line and became hooked with the Halo Universe. Thanks to the release of Halo CE Anniversary, we have had the honor of the terminals explaining more into detail about Halo. Now one terminal that really got to me was number 9; Death of Keyes. Saddest Halo Moment: The terminal for Halo CEA, The Death of Keyes, was one that really dug into me. As I look at other people who scoff at the people like me for actually feeling bad for a video game character's death, you have to wonder how cold-hearted you have to be in general not to care even a bit. In the terminal, we know that Cpt. Jacob Keyes was infected by the flood and was being tormented by it. Having his memories stripped from him, having the pain of becoming more like a flood creature, and potentially losing the whereabouts of Earth to the flood. I thought to myself, had that had been me, I would have compromised everything, been too weak. The fact that Jacob Keyes was determined, in spite of being tormented and killed slowly, to keep the flood far away from the human race is awe inspiring, and I wish Bungie would have done more with Keyes in a game. Discuss. Would you agree or do you have a different opinion, and if so what and why? [Edited on 10.25.2012 4:44 PM PDT]

 • I agree, however, for me the saddest moment was SGM Johnson dying in Halo 3. He survived the Flood and the Covenant, only to be killed by Guilty Spark because he would have destroyed another Halo and the Ark. I appreciated Johnson because of his dry sense of humor, granted that his death was rather quick and he was not really tortured, it caught me a bit off-guard when I first played through it.

 • My saddest moment would be is if Cortana who is beyond her expiration date dies or like turns against chief in halo 4. Cortana is to me the most human character in the halo universe because she actually has feelings. master chief doesn't really talk so cortana makes up for his emotional parts.

 • For me the saddest scene was just after Kat died in Halo Reach. Not because I was especially fond of Kat, but just because the scene was beautifully done. Perfect music, no dialog. There's this long pause in the cutscene and then a wide shot where you see just how badly the Covenant are burning down Reach. If you turn on subtitles you can hear a few civilians pleading for their lives at this point. The whole thing is one of my favorite moments in any video game.

 • I thought Johnson or Miranda's death really was better. It was so incredibly sad to see the Prophet of Truth come so close to winning. And Miranda's had her nearly killing Johnson.

 • After reading other posts, the saddest part is that good people died.

 • Besides Keyes' death in the terminal, I'd say Jorge got to me the most. Not because it was tragic, but because he made the choice to do so.

 • I'll go with an example from the books, since the two deaths - Johnson and Kat - have already been covered. Personally, it was Will dying in GoO; he was probably my favorite Halo character, even if he never had much exposition. After that line about "he was the funny one, but augmentation has made him darker" (to that effect, at least) I always empathized with his character (funny to cynical is an apt description for myself), so it really sucked when he died. Even if he did go out punching straight through a Hunter... So, it's Will for me.

The music was perfect, and the way you see Carter carrying her really strengthens the relationship they had and shows you how strong it was, even showing Carter cared. :'(

 • The saddest part for me was definietly Johnson dying. The man saw the beginning of the Human-Covenant War, survived numerous battles (Battle of Installion 04, Battle of Earth, Battle of Reach, Battle of Installation 05, Battle of the Ark to name just a few), he survived contact with the Flood, he was a soldier through and through. But then he gets caught off guard by a lightbulb (343 Guilty Spark). And it is at his death scene (where he says "Don't you ever let her go" to the chief) where I think the Chief regrets sending him (Johnson) down there instead of going down there himself.

 • Kurt's death. It was the build-up of the situation and the dependancy of the S-IIIs to him. You knew it was coming since he wore SPI [Symbolic reason] and was inflicted bad by that hunter, [Ironic] but you just didn't think about how selfless he would be when the time came. He ultimately 'passed the torch' for Blue Teams acceptance of the S-IIIs and saved everybody's ass while doing it. It was also pretty tragic for Blue Team, to be reunited with a friend [so little of them was left] who they thought died for almost a decade or 2 [can't remember] only to have him back and actually die moments later. [For real this time.] I guess, anyone in Blue Team for me really. The way Nylund always portrayed them to me, was that they functioned like a family, before they were just competitive teams, much like Red team, Green Team etc. But it then became an in-group family following the subsequent deaths and split-ups during Reach. As time passes fewer and fewer were left which was why Kurt made such an effort to convince Blue Team that the S-III's were 'like one of them'. It was Kurt's new family mixed with his old. Making it much more interesting when they re-form for a big skirmish as every death meant something. [Even Will when he was sidelined for the majority of the Novel and Dante the S-III]. You actually feel like they lost someone important to them. Which makes the character dynamic and situation so much more tense. The S-III's felt like juniors looking up to the S-IIs as Seniors. I actually really enjoyed GoO. Might give it a re-read when I have the opportunity. The thing I love about Nylund's novels that are not captured in any other Halo novels in general. Is how desperate he portrays the situation to be. No matter how good Humanity's best soldiers were [Spartan-II], they were always outnumbered, outgunned. Even with the S-III project the purpose was to buy time at the cost of lives. They knew they had no real chance but they kept fighting anyways. [As seen in FoR. The Navel battles and the Generator defence dependancy] The sheer outnumbered air and ground units. Reach couldn't have won even if the UNSC had been ready and what made it so good was the fact that Nylund made sure everyone knew that, it was a battle for hope. To get off the planet and pro-long the attack as long as possible in order to give others the opportunity to survive. [Something the game never captured, in fact they made it too chill, gave it more time. Weeks, even months. As if the covenant were making tea. Not outright slaughtering humanity] -blam!- is meant to hit the fan when the covenant arrives and it's meant to hit hard. I feel as if 343i is taking that vulnerabilty away and replacing it with superiority. Human's are no longer desperate to claw for survival. But now they facillitate wars for self-gain. Maybe the Forerunners can bring them back down. But it just doesn't feel the same. [Edited on 10.27.2012 6:28 AM PDT]

 • I no.I also thought Emiles death was kinda sad. Though it was reallly epic too. "I'm Ready! How bout' you!?" However the saddest one for me was Noble 6's death. Its kinda sad cuz you see all the elites trying to kill him, and him strugguling desprately, then you see him shattered helmet. Then Dr. Halsleys epic speech adds up to a very emotional death, and all together emotional game. Reach was the first halo game I played, and I don't see why people hate it so much. I loved it. • I always thought the Flood was really disturbing, you don't die normally you are transformed and you slowly go insane, that's just messed up. I think the saddest part is thinking of what all the people who get turned into flood go through right before being converted. I've always had a fear of deformity and disease so the flood really gets me.

 • Seargent Johnson. Just the, "Send me out, with a bang," really got to me, realising that him, after all he had been through, wasn't going to be leaving with you. I honestly thought the last part would be you and him driving off the Halo ring together. Also, how Jorge seemed to selflessly give his own life for the protection of reach, despite not knowing what would come later, the drifting away was very well done, as well, how it seems that it was futile what he did, after all, and how he may have been better, on Reach, fighting. • The stuff we never see. A full on glassing of a planet and its population. Men, Women, Children, Puppies and Kittens. All getting smouldered to the floor on which they stand or get cooked alive in bunkers when the when the temperature exceeds the thousands.

 • When johnson was killed. His last words "Never let her go" struck my heart like a brick. Master chief said nothing, simply knelled there. I think it was one of the very few times in halo when we saw just how human john really was, and just how mortal life is. Master chief was this seemingly unstoppable elite, cyborg warrior with no emotion, and to see his body language as Johnson died was more than symbolic. It showed that your humanity was something that no amount of augmentation and training could hide. It symbolised Master chief was human under all the armor. It also saddened me because Johnson had been this well liked character and this icon of a marine for the last decade in halo. To see him finally be slain was wretched. It really struck John deep.
