By the way they post, it can be quite obvious in some cases.

is this a joke? Answer : He looks at the join date!!! lolololol.

Not sure, most of the time I can't tell.
Posted by: ALI217 is this a joke? Answer : He looks at the join date!!! lolololol.
The join date doesn't make a difference between a troll and a new user.

Just ban them all. We're isolationist.
Posted by: ALI217 is this a joke? Answer : He looks at the join date!!! lolololol.
^Didn't think about the question posed too carefully. OT: Trolls are obnoxious about their supposed ignorance, new users are timid.
Posted by: SilverBulitt82 Not sure, most of the time I can't tell.
It's hard, but there are distinctions. One will seem oblivious, and one will act oblivious and then act like a jerk.

I'm assuming that they would check the user's post history, join date, past offenses, and linked gamertag to determine if the user is a troll or just a new member. If they can't figure it out, they could always warn the user as a future reference for such behavoir. [Edited on 10.10.2012 2:09 PM PDT]

One has to do so very carefully. Consider tone, phrasing, and specific words that the poster in question uses. Generally, though, if one has to ask if someone is a troll or a new user, they are probably a troll. If not, they can handle a warning.

Basically, don't worry about it until the user makes a mistake, and then judge them accordingly.
-
It isn't THAT hard to tell
-
Users really don't matter in the grand scheme of moderating. What matters is the severity of the rule infringement and what can be done accordingly.
-
Generally the first thing that comes to a new user's mind to post isn't flamebait/controversial topics.
-
What's the need to tell the difference? Rules are rules, if they're broken they get warned/banned.
-
Join date... And trolls usually fail anyway so they're compromised within the first 4 posts.

Trolls use the default avatar. [Edited on 10.10.2012 4:15 PM PDT]

If I was a Ninja I would have banned anyone who posted the stupid things I did when I first joined (I was a try-hard noob, it almost a parody it's so bad). So I guess they let one or two threads go but if they start building up then they issue a warning (that will shake up new members, but not trolls). They put them both under the bridge and see which one complains.

Post history, and nobody uses the default avatar. Oh...were you talking to forum ninjas? Be a little specific.
