Regardless of generic-ness or not, I still don't find any of the songs memorable aside from To Galaxy. Perhaps because there is nothing to associate them with, or because the music itself doesn't have any recognizable patterns like Marty's music. Then again, the first time I heard Lone Wolf, before I saw the trailer, I loved it.

We're in a totally different world with brand new enemies we have never fought before. It makes sense that not all the music will be like the older games. A lot about Halo 4 is different from the original games. Even ODST was different and everybody loved that.

It lacks identity and doesn't strike me as something I'd expect from Halo.
This is the kind of stuff I was talking about. After ten years of listening to only 1 guy's style of music, you've all just assumed that the only way it can sound "like Halo" is if it has Marty's seal of approval on it (which, by the way, the Halo 4 soundtrack totally does). Marty has his own style, themes and motifs he uses. To you, on a subconcious level, that is the only thing Halo can sound like. If someone changes that style, or even if the Artist changes, you suddenly say it sounds "generic," a bandwagon trigger word that does not accurately describe the topic. The original Halo trilogy had just as many songs that sounded "generic" as this one does. this is not generic. Nor is this. This, by the apparent definition of this forum, IS generic. Before ODST came out, if I told you that Halo would have a new artist for a new Halo game, and that he was going to be heavy on the jazz and saxaphone, would you have flipped your -blam!-? Probably. If I told you that artist was not new, and was just an experimental Marty, you would be a lot calmer, but still likely would have flipped some -blam!-. And then I gave you narrative and visual context, allowed you to play the game. Suddenly, the soundtrack is the one of the best in the franchise, despite not being anything like Halo "should sound." So tell me, how exactly is Halo 4's soundtrack unfitting for Halo?
Good post. Looking at what I said, I went with a poor choice of words to describe my opinion on the music of Halo 4. Instead, put it like this. The samples on the OP are now any piece of random stock music and so are the past Halo soundtracks. No narrative or visual context. The pre-Halo 4 music will still sound better to me. Not because of the guy who wrote it, but because I prefer how it sounds. People assume too much and think they have to justify or make an excuse for every single thing in the world. Mass Effect 3 has several new composers. I wasn't hateful towards them at all, as a matter of fact I enjoyed most of it even if my favourite tracks were from Sam Hulick.

But, without the game we're unable to make an accurate assessment in my opinion. Think of John Williams and how his pieces resonate with you. You hear the Imperial March and you immediately think of Darth Vader and vice versa. The Halo theme is synonymous with the game because if you think of the music you think of Master Chief and vice versa. Without the game, we don't have a grounding point for the music. We can't associate something else with it yet and that makes these pieces sound good, but not great. I'm waiting for the game to really listen to the tracks more closely.
Exactly, without context there is no way we can truly judge these pieces. I think of Under Cover of Night, I remember the sniping sections of T&R and the 'Final Run' section of Two Betrayals. I think of In Amber Clad, I remember the 'Nothing but Jackal' segment of Delta Halo. We can't do this with Halo 4 yet because the game isn't out. I can only speculate that Revival will play when the Didact emerges from the Cryptum because of the chanting being reminiscent from what happens in the novel Halo: Cryptum - which already provides a layer of fiction to the track if it turns out to be true.
These men speak the truth.

Look at Stephen Rippy who composed the Halo Wars OST, nobody complains about him because his musical themes and tones are entirely based off Marty's work and they sound extremely similar. It's that same mentality that comes with reaction to game design, "change = bad".
