Do Graphics matter to you?

I was in an XBL party the other night with a couple of friends and a few randoms. I happen to bring up the fact that Borderlands 2 is coming out and I asked who all is getting it. All I heard was a bunch of negative responses and people talking trash about borderlands saying it is crap because it has 'bad graphics'. So I asked them, "You guys only play games for graphics?" and they pretty much said yes. I was pretty irritated and I've lost a detrimental amount of faith in today's gaming generation. Since when do graphics become a main selling point in games? People buy a game for graphics over gameplay? It's absurd.

 • To an extent If it's an arcade sort of game with no story or characters, then no. If its a game with a story and characters, I at least want thr graphics to be good enough to not break the immersion.

 • Yes, but they won't stop me from playing a game unless I can't stand the art style.

 • Of course they do. This is 2012. We have the technology to have good games with good graphics. There's no excuse.

 • Even though it boils down to gameplay to make it fun or not, if I'm going to be staring at something for hours on end, I might as well enjoy what it looks like.

 •
Posted by: What Is This1
Posted by: EvilTaffyapple They didn't until I bought my gaming pc. Now because 99% of my games look awesome, I can't enjoy the older 1% that look crappy.
Meh you must have always cared about graphics. I did the same thing and I still haven't changed.
Not really. I've been playing games like Doom, Deus Ex, Commandos, duke Nukem for 10-15 years. Now I play them on my new pc, I just can't look at them without part of me dying inside. Truth is, I'm a graphics whore now. If it doesn't at least look halfway decent, I can't motivate myself to play it.

 • Depends. If the game advertises a lot about the graphics, and they suck. I will not get it. Here's why, if a game advertises about it's graphics so much, it indicates that they spent a lot of time on the graphics. (Possibly indicating that other areas of the game didn't get as much love) When the graphics are mediocre, it shows me that the thing they spent 90% of their time, resources, and power on, isn't very stunning, and that other parts of the game will be even worse. (This is where reviews come in) Sometimes that isn't the case. Look at Gran Turismo 5. Advertised as the most realistic looking racing game. Graphics looked great, photorealistic at certain times. What happened was that they seemed to spend most their time on graphics, and very little time on anything else. The game lacked in gameplay regions.

 • As long as I can differentiate between bushes and baddies I don't care too much.

 •
Posted by: Fridge Gnome
Posted by: WinyPit82 I love Minecraft. That is all.
But even minecraft can look good! Graphics matter, if they didn't matter we would still be playing pong. That's not to say graphics should take precedent over story though.
Minecraft already looks good. It's just simple. Realistic does not equal good.

 • If it's a game where graphics are pretty important (like Forza 4) then yes. The main thing I care about when it comes to visuals is the framerate. Low framerates give me a headache.

 • I am not going to put down a game simply for graphics. But, for me to say that graphics do not have an effect is absolute bull. Some games, bluntly, benefit a lot from the increased immersion.

 • Borderlands 2's graphics are great. I think they meant the art style?

 • No, I actually prefer my games without graphics. They only take away from the experience, obviously.

 • Graphics don't really matter unless they're absolutely awful and it detracts from the experience. I for one love Borderlands/Borderlands 2 graphics because it has a nice cell shaded, unique art style look that I've always loved.

 • Graphics don't make a game but they are a very large part of it. I can get caught up in a game with older/bad graphics but the first hour or so is torture.

 •
Posted by: Tartan 118 I feel inclined to make a new thread about this, given how ignorant some people are being on the matter. I'll give it a while.
Make another post here. Don't make a new thread in hopes of stardom.
Posted by: Tartan 118 Hipsters will claim graphics aren't important. Unfortunately (for them), they're wrong; like it or not, graphics are the first thing that you experience of a game, and, for the vast majority of games, the main means of experiencing them. If the game is difficult to understand, or looks so bad that you feel ill, or if there are aesthetic clashes and things that just don't look good in the art style, it's going to ruin your enjoyment of the game. Maybe not completely, depending on how bad it is, but your opinion will be affected nevertheless.
Graphics are the first thing any consumer sees, and that's why the industry puts such effort into them; they're the main selling tool. It's like the cover of a book - it draws you in, feeds your interest, but you didn't buy the book to gawk at the cover. You brought it to read. Graphics can enhance the user's experience, like how the cover of a book can give clarity to a thing being described, but it doesn't make the whole experience. Like I expressed in my prior post, graphics that clearly depict what they're meant to are far better than graphics that strive for photo-realism in this console generation, because the technology to accommodate such a feat isn't there. Even when it is, photo-realism isn't required; it's just an artistic choice. [Edited on 09.16.2012 8:08 AM PDT]

 • Graphics matter to a degree, but it's not nearly as important as gameplay.
Posted by: Siffera13 Aesthetics/Style > Detail
That's a very good way to put it. [Edited on 09.16.2012 8:02 AM PDT]

 • Aesthetics/Style > Detail It matters that way to me. But it doesn't decide whether or not the game plays well, although if it's graphics are bad enough it might irritate me to play it.

 • yes graphics matter and when i say that, people think im saying they matter more than gameplay..which im not saying graphics matter in their own way, they help to build the fidelity of the experience but obviously a game cant stand on graphics alone [Edited on 09.16.2012 7:48 AM PDT]

 • They matter because I'd like to see the man's face of which I'm speaking and not a smudge of pixels that are moving. Halo 4's graphics are pretty much what I like. As long as the story is good and I can discern faces, I'll be happy.
