Undercover Cops Flirted With Students to Trick Them Into Selling Pot

http://www.alternet.org/newsandviews/article/789519/sick%3A_young%2C_undercover_cops_flirted_with_students_to_trick_them_into_selling_pot/
Last year in three high schools in Florida, several undercover police officers posed as students. The undercover cops went to classes, became Facebook friends and flirted with the other students. One 18-year-old honor student named Justin fell in love with an attractive 25-year-old undercover cop after spending weeks sharing stories about their lives, texting and flirting with each other. One day she asked Justin if he smoked pot. Even though he didn't smoke marijuana, the love-struck teen promised to help find some for her. Every couple of days she would text him asking if he had the marijuana. Finally, Justin was able to get it to her. She tried to give him $25 for the marijuana and he said he didn't want the money -- he got it for her as a present. A short while later, the police did a big sweep and arrest 31 students -- including Justin. Almost all were charged with selling a small amount of marijuana to the undercover cops. Now Justin has a felony hanging over his head.
Wow. First of all, I feel terrible for that Justin kid. And this is really stupid. -blam!- tha police comin straight from the undergroud.

 • I'm pretty sure that's illegal. Baiting someone to commit a crime is illegal if I remember correctly.

 • I'm okay with this. But Pot should be legalized, at least in small amounts.

 • This is a bunch of bull-blam!- and the undercover cops should be ashamed of themselves.

 • Good job cops. You just got an innocent kid to do something stupid for someone he liked and trusted, and was then quickly betrayed.

 • Yeah this is why I don't trust cops. Never let a cop into your house if he/she doesn't have a search warrant. [Edited on 02.16.2012 6:02 PM PST]

 • You know, how is it legal to ask a kid to get someone an illegal substance. If the kid never smoked it and she got him to buy it, wouldn't that be the cops fault?

 • Love makes you do stupid things. But I don't know what's worse. The fact that cop knew full well that she was ruining this guy's life for helping someone he thought he could totally trust and like. Now he's probably going to grow up a distrustful old coot because of this event, now he can't even serve in the army, and he'll probably have a really hard time getting a job. Pro work police.

Here we are, telling kids to avoid falling into peer pressure, yet these cops are encouraging the use of it. It's totally counterproductive. Not only that, it's sick how they toyed with his emotions in order to get a prosecution.

 • I won't know whether Justin was being idiot or not until I see this "attractive 25-year-old undercover cop"

 • She pressured him into it, she should be arrested. This is so ridiculous, she's the one that did a crime. [Edited on 02.16.2012 6:06 PM PST]

 • I would love to be able to see the original article on the New York Times, but they seemed to have removed it. Until then, I won't make any judgments. Hypothetically speaking, if this were to be true, I would be extremely outraged and upset with these individuals. It isn't fair to say that "all cops are like this". And I would love it if people in this thread would refrain from alluding to this.

Promising love and a false sense of trust.

 • Correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't something like that fall under entrapment, which is illegal for police officers to do?

 • Well they have to be caught in the act in order to be arrested. If this is how they want to play the game, then that's how it's gonna be
Trick or no Trick, he was still very willing to commit the crime.
The police were teaching them a valuable lesson: you should never bow into peer pressure, especially when it comes to drugs. That's what they get for not being above the influence. The more you know...

 • I think the victims should sue the police department for entrapment and all the officers tricking the teens go to jail.

 • I usually side with the police, but I think this is really unfair, Justin was probably a nice kid, love can make people do crazy things. Assuming the article is true that is, it seems rather biased. [Edited on 02.16.2012 6:19 PM PST]
