Halo 2 on Xbox Live?

I'm fairly new to PC gaming, I've always stuck with console but I'm learning more and more that PC's are far more superior to consoles and so I wanted to try Halo 2. Apparently you can play it online still on the PC? I haven't a clue. Anybody care to shed a little light on the topic?

Halo 2 is not a good example of a PC game. Unlike the original Halo PC, Halo 2 Vista is a straight up Xbox port, and is basically an Xbox game, so much so it works better with a 360 controller than a M+K. To your question, yes Halo 2 Vista still has "LIVE" and you can use your 360 Gamertag to log in and earn achievements etc BUT there is NO Matchmaking, instead you have a server browser. Finally, the player count is always below 100, sitting around 30-75 at any one time. Any more questions and I'll try to help.

 • Thanks for the info guys. It's pretty sad to hear that matchmaking is dead but at least it still has a small community of players. I'll look forward to trying it out. Currently trying to learn how to build a gaming PC as I heard It's cheaper to build rather than buy.

It tracks your stats too. Furthermore, there is an Co-op mod that enables you to play online co-op with up to 16 players but it's buggy however. Yeah building one is cheaper, make sure you're aware of the different sockets for the motherboards. Depending on your budget, we may be able to help. If you have the money, I recommend an i5 2500k, 8GB DDR3 and at least a GTX 560Ti or their AMD equivalents. That gives you room for overclocking and SLI'ing for extra performance. Of course that's just a suggestion and there are plenty of other great/better combinations for price.

 •
Posted by: Ikerzaz It's pretty sad to hear that matchmaking is dead
I know you're used to console gaming so I'll explain something short to you about that. Matchmaking was created by Bungie to make peer-to-peer servers seem at least bearable. Dedicated servers/Server browsers are much better with people admins paying close attention to their own. There's less lag and no one ever gets the "Host Advantage" that's always complained about on console games. There is absolutely no positive to Matchmaking what so ever. Some people contend that it's better for ranking, but we've seen how Halo 3 gets with derankers/booster. I also see playing Matchmaking competitively as the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It's too uncontrolled of an environment to ever be a real competitive scene. Only private organized matches should ever be considered for competitive gaming. [Edited on 02.15.2012 8:32 AM PST]

 •
Posted by: Ikerzaz I'll look forward to trying it out.
You're setting yourself up for disappointment. There's not a whole lot of good in the H2V community outside of the games that get organized by Grunty.
Posted by: Ikerzaz Currently trying to learn how to build a gaming PC as I heard It's cheaper to build rather than buy.
For gaming PCs, definitely. My rig's more powerful than Alienware PCs that cost over double what I paid. But you should really try to acquaint yourself with PC gaming for a while. Maybe buy a decent OEM and upgrade it before jumping headlong into PC building. Just sayin', you're green, it shows. And you could waste a lot of money screwing something up while buying the parts or building the rig.

 • The difference is choice. "The problem is choice..." -- Neo Consoles are designed with the goal of simplifying everything. A game console is a black box that plays games, and has few options. Computer games are designed with the opposite in mind. Some games provide such a huge array of options that it can be confusing. Try to get used to the idea that this is an attempt to empower YOU. You get to decide what balance you want between fancy visual effects and the smoothness of how the game runs. Some people "need" a high frame rate. Others don't mind less consistent performance in exchange for nice visuals. Bottom line: Consoles decide for you. PC gaming lets you decide. If you find a PC game that doesn't give you enough choices, it's a "console port" and likely not made with a computer gamer in mind.
