Shadow's guide to (Internet) Myths! Farewell Flood!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE!!! The myth thread is now complete. I have finished what I set out to do and am now moving on. To read the final myth and a farewell please click here. Thanks for the many memories and I wish you all the best in your lives. - Love Shadow

I have always been extremely interested in Myths, Legends and Hoaxes occurring in real life and the Internet. This thread is here as a "library" of the major internet Legends and Myths. Please, if I'm missing any, reply with some information on the subject and I will add it to the OP along with your name. If you see any mistakes, please inform me! Also, the reason I have Internet in brackets in the OP is because this thread will FOCUS on Internet myths but not be restricted to them. Basically, any myth (real life or internet) is allowed. Also, if this gets popular I MAY need a second OP. But we'll see. Anyway, let's get into it.

Subject: #001: The Slender Man Alright, I've picked one of the most well-known celebrities on the Flood as our first subject. The Slender Man! Oh and what a subject he is. About the Slenderman: Slenderman (also known as "Slendy" or "TheSlenderMan") is a mythical creature that appeared on the internet about 2009. He was conjured up at the SomethingAwful.com forums by a member named Victor Surge for a Photoshop competition. He is depicted to be tall and thin (hence the Slender), wearing a black suit and having an emotionless, blank face. Victor entered the competition on June 10th, 2009 (the day the world was introduced to Slendy). He (Victor) had stated that Slenderman was a creature who stalked little children. Slenderman didn't really rise to fame until the 24th of June (2009) when the infamous 4Chan caught its scent and it's paranormal (/x/) board took a massive liking to Slendy. Still, even with 4chan knowing about Slendy you wouldn't really call him a massive internet star just yet. But, then came the MarbleHornets Project. On June 20th (before Slendy came to 4chan)a mysterious video aired on youtube. This video was called theMarble Hornets entries. "MarbleHornets" started hosting videos called "entries" which claimed to be taped segments retrieved by someone named "Jay" (or also "J"), and contained footage of a friend that had since disappeared. Then the /x/ board found the videos and they got incredibly famous and so did Slendy. He has become, what I call, an "Internet Sensation". He has been featured on many sites (including this one; see Top Forum Topic by Lt Sartor). After the videos got famous random people started posting their experiences with Slendy. A lot of pictures started showing up and basically, the internet both loved and feared the infamous SlenderMan. It has later become clear that the videos are fake and it was created by two film students (who were also SomethingAwful users) as part of an ARG. But users still watch the entries regardless, possibly hoping that this mythological beast is real. Slender Man Gallery: Here is Slenderman having some fun with the local kids. Here he is with some more victims... errm... kids... And here is some amazing artwork of Slendy. Shadow's Verdict: Real or fake, I think it is safe to say most of the internet (at least the forum side of the internet) knows Slendy by now. And 90% of us love and are fascinated by him. Regardless of the fact that he creeps most us out. But, I'm going to call FAKE on this one. Simply because of the fact that before the SomethingAwful competition there was absolutely no trace of Slendy anywhere. No experiences, no pictures. It is just all too made up. All the pictures I have seen are either extremely photoshopped or Artwork. So, my final verdict for the infamous SlenderMan is FAKE. Now that I have said that I am most likely going to get Slenderly love in the middle of the night from a tall suited man, but oh well. That's the price of the internet. Regardless, Slenderman has captivated and fascinated my imagination for a year now and it has been a lot of fun researching into the myth. Also, this thread needs credit for opening Bungie.net's mind to Slendy! Subject #001 Complete.

Subject #002: Lavender Town Lavender Town is only really known to the most dedicated Pokemon or game forums. I wouldn't call it famous but it definitely has a reputation around these parts. So, shall we get into it straight away? I think so. About Lavender Town: So, you may be wondering what Lavender Town is. Well, Lavender Town is essentially a little town in Pokemon Red and Green that was said to cause mass suicides in Teenagers ages 7 - 12. The actual town it self is quite normal. Just an average town in the world of Pokemon. What is different, however, is the town's purpose. It serves as the Kanto's (the world in Red and Green, I think? Correct me if I'm wrong! I know Hoenn is Ruby and Sapphire!) pokemon graveyard. It features it's own special Tower (filled with graves) and an eerie song. The Lavender Town Syndrome (also known as "Lavender Town Tone" or "Lavender Town Suicides" and "Lavender Town Conspiracy") made itself famous shortly after the games release (1996) because it was said to cause mass suicides or illness of children aged from 7 - 12 years old. The reason of this was said to be listening to the original Lavender Town theme (check the subject's gallery for videos and pictures!) One video, which showed on Youtube on July 26th, 2010, appeared to have software that would actually analyse the LT theme and convert them into images. Pictures at the end of the song seemed to resemble the pokemon Unown. What is so strange about this is the fact that Unown didn't appear in generation one pokemon (Red and Green) and actually made it's appearance in Generation Two. Another strange thing that appears to be in Lavender Town is a couple of extra things. A "White Hand" sprite. A "Ghost Animation". And a model named the "Buried Alive Model". There is no known pictures of the BA Model but it has appeared in several copy-pasta's of the LTS. The White Hand Sprite: Known as WhiteHand.gif, this was meant to appear as a pokemon on the third level of the Lavender Tower. It has four different animation; Introduction, Idle and two attacks. The attacks are known as "Fist" and "Brutal". Fist is basically just a punch. But the Brutal animation is missing several frames, apparently. It has been said to "Open up" and then it just cut's out. After that it appear's closed up again. There has been no record of the missing frames as of the time of this writing. The White Hand is depicted as a decaying, shriveled up White hand. The Ghost Animation: Coded as Haunting.swf, the ghost animation was coded to appear in several places in the tower. Many people believe it is just a background feature as you can not interact with it. It has 59 frames in total. Half of these frames appear to be the normal Pokemon Ghost model. About a quarter of these frames appear to be static to create a fading out effect. The rest, strangely, appear to be screaming faces, a "Grim Reaper" style thing and corpses. Programmer Hisashi Sogabe has said that he has "No knowledge as to where the images surfaced". Not much else is known about TGA. The Buried Alive Model: Known as the Buryman script, the BA model was to be the boss on top of the Lavender Town Tower. He was replaced by the ghost of a Marowak. Once arriving on top of the tower, the player would have this conversation with the Buryman: Buried Alive: You're... Here. BA: I'm trapped... BA: And I'm lonely... BA: So very lonely... BA: Won't you join me? After this, a battle would be initiated. Once in "BattleMode" the model would appear to be a decaying human corpse trying to crawl out of the ground. It was programmed to have two White Hands, a Gengar and a Muk. No script was written if you defeated the BA Model. The game-boy would just... freeze. Although, if you lost against the Buried Alive model then he would say something along the lines of "Finally, Fresh meat" followed by several lines of gibberish. He then dragged the character into the ground with him. Then "Game Over" would be displayed. But in the background the BA Model would be devouring the character. Apparently though, the file downloaded itself into the actual gameboy. So that when you turned on your GB you would view the Game Over image and the sound file staticmesh.wav was played. But anyway, Lavender Town is filled with creepyness. You may not realize it as you play through again soon but Lavender Town may have actually been the cause of many child suicides in 1996. Kinda makes you feel sick, doesn't it? Apparently though, the reason for the suicides were the theme song and that song alone. It is said that kids and young teenagers can actually hear different sounds in the music.

If anyone has any suggestions for Myths I could do/research I would be happy to do just that! Just reply with the name of the myth or legend and I'll get straight on it. - Shadow [Edited on 04.08.2012 12:46 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: ShadowLegacy Shadow's Final Subject Hello there, fine sir/madam. I would like to formally welcome you to what is the final ShadowLegacy crafted myth within the thread. If you have been here from the very start I applaud you and would like to personally thank you for all you've helped me achieve. But I feel I must move on to greater things now and so, after posting this subject, I will be leaving Bungie.net. This is not for attention and I wouldn't be telling you this if not for the fact that there will be no more subjects/posts and people may begin to wonder. Thank you, everyone, for making my stay so amazing and wonderful. I got to know a lot of you (and will continue to on Facebooks, XbawksLive and other social media devices) and I believe it has made me a better person all-together. Sure, I've had patches of insanity fuelled by trolls and big meanie heads on the Flood but they are outweighed by the many bros of the flood I admire. I'm not leaving the internet (you may even see a couple videos on my youtube channel soon) but I am leaving Bungie.net. I am doing so with great memories and amazing times under my belt. So, as a kind of going away gift I present to you the long awaited myth subject of: Jeff the Killer. I hope you enjoy this subject and, for that matter, the entire thread as much as I enjoyed writing it for all of you. I hope you can continue discussing the myths whilst I am elsewhere. Thank you, once again, for making this what it is. I merely wrote it, you guys literally made it. Thank you. ~ Shadow

FINAL MYTH TRANSMISSION: Jeff the Killer Here we are at the long anticipated Jeff the Killer subject. This subject borrows a lot of different styles of creepy-writing strategies used in other myths (namely, Smile Dog). Essentially, it follows the story of a young child and his rise to a serial killer lifestyle. The story, for the most part, is well constructed but ultimately it falls prey to the same weaknesses displayed in many other creepy-pastas. The story starts out with a small family (of four) moving into a new house. The neighbours introduce themselves and the children (aged about 12) are invited to a party hosted by the neighbours. Everything is fine until the children (Jeff and Liu) are attempting to catch a bus. The story reaches a climatic point where the young boys encounter a small group of juvenile badasses who attempt to collect money as a kind of tax for catching the bus. The three "badass" twelve year olds take Liu's wallet and this causes Jeff to experience new feelings (puberty?) which, in an amazing situation, cause him to absolutely beat the hell out of the three youngsters. Jeff and his brother escape unharmed. Until the next day. The police show up at the residence and Jeff admits to beating up the kids and stabbing one of them (oh, yeah, the three badasses carried knives and Jeff used one of the knifes to stab one of the badasses). In a teary conclusion, Liu denies his brother's allegations and tells the police HE was the one that beat them up. He held a knife and scratch marks over his arm as proof. The police accepted this and let Jeff go but took Liu to juvenile detention. This is a part which struck me as obviously unbelievable. This kid, who had no previous criminal record, was sent to juvenile detention for 12 months for protecting himself. With no court date or anything. Yeah... right. Also worth noting that his father had absolutely no clue that the son was taken to juvenile detention until that night when the mother told him. Merely three days (or something ridiculous like that) after the son was taken to juvenile detention the family honours the party invite and attends the birthday bash. Whilst at the party the skater badass kids show up packing heat (yes, twelve year olds with guns and knives) and ultimately lay waste to Jeff (with none of the adults interfering because of the guns). Jeff is burned but survives. He also manages to kill one of the kids (but at the cost of his mental integrity) in a anger fuelled attack. He is never the same afterwards. Mainly because he is put in a cast at hospital for god knows how long waiting for the burns to heal. The only benefit to this entire situation is the fact that Liu is set free as the badasses obviously committed the first crime (seriously, the law enforcement in this story absolutely blows). The story picks up once again when Jeff's bandages are removed revealing a horrific face. His face is basically ghostly white and featureless. He loves it. His parents hate it. His brother thinks it looks hawt. You know, normal stuffs. Also worth noting that he loves it because his mental integrity and sanity was destroyed when he killed that kid so he is now basically a serial killer. They take him home straight away (because taking bandages off = good to go home and healthy) and there he slaughters his mother, father and brother whom he loved. Perfect way to end the story. Clearly, the story is completely fake and whilst well written it is still completely false with no evidence given. It's generally just a glorified creepy pasta which is why I was surprised so many people wanted me to do a subject post based around it. I have pointed out throughout that post many different ways the story was weak and not as well thought out. Although it was a good read it wasn't the best or scariest. The main attraction to the myth is the pictures where look eerily similar to smiledog. Again, as I said with smiledawg, these pictures can EASILY be photoshopped and therefore should definitely not be treated as legit photos of a creepy white man. Also, I'm interested in knowing who actually took the photos. Maybe Jeff and Smiledog are actually partners. Man, that'd be interesting. Resources: Creepy Pasta page including images! The Verdict: As I've implied previously throughout the story I believe it is entirely fake. The story, reality wise, is completely garbage and makes no sense in most parts. It is written fairly well, however, so extra points there for presentation. On the scare factor side, there isn't really anything new or innovative here. It seems to be a genuine rip off of Smile Dog. I award it 4/10 on the scare factor scale. On the writing skills, it is generally a well constructed read. Therefore I award it 7/10 on the writing scale. On the realism side, there really isn't any realism to the story. Most of it is garbage and obviously fake. I award it 2/10. Overall, the only great thing about the story is the actual story. Everything else is pretty mediocre and blatantly overly generic. I award it 5/10 overall. Thanks for reading and I hope everyone who has stuck around the thread has a great life and many more myth filled reading marathons. Here's to the myth thread. Three cheers! Hip Hip...! Love you all so damned much, ~Shadow
Sorry to see you go man, I've always liked you Good luck with future endeavours :)

The girl was so scared she locked all her doors and windows. She made sure her room was secured. She wasn't sure if it was a joke or for real. She didn't know when he was going to come. The girl was so frightened she decided to sleep with her little sister. The girl dozed off quickly. Then she heard a knock on the window. The girl slowly walked to the window. It started knocking louder. The girl looked through the windows and saw nothing... just some of the tree branches. The girl went back to bed with her sister. The bed was wet and had a pretty horrid smell. Maybe her sister wet the bed... the girl checked and found blood everywhere. The girl panicked. She didn't know what to do. She ran and hid in the closet in case the killer was there for her. While looking through the cracks of the closet the girl saw a shadow. It was dark, so she couldn't figure out who it was. She started to get more frightened. The shadow crept closer to the closet. The girl closed her eyes as if it was a dream. Then suddenly he opened the closet door and pulled her out. Her parents found her dead the next morning. She was completely skinned and hanging in her sister's closet. The younger sister was also found skinned and dead. PART 2... Two years after the Smith sisters deaths, the parents had a baby boy. The girl's room became a guest room and the little sister's room where the murder took place became the baby's room. The baby grew up to be a successful kid. One night he was on the computer and received an instant messege. h0tNsPiCy91: Hey lil bro!!! 2seXay4u: Who is this? h0tNsPiCy91: It's your big sis. 2seXay4u: I never had a sister. I'm an only child. 2seXay4u: This is some kinda joke, huh? h0tNsPiCy91: Mom and dad never told you? h0tNsPiCy91: I died 15 years ago with your other older sister. h0tNsPiCy91: We were murdered in your room which was once my little sister's room. She was killed in bed when I was sleeping. I was killed in the closet and skinned to death. 2seXay4u: Quit lying. I never had a sister. If I did my parents would have told me. Whatever. Your stupid. h0tNsPiCy91: You don't believe me? Well if you wanna look in your closet floor. h0tNsPiCy91: I carved my name and the time and date I was being murdered. Then I carved my little sister's name. h0tNsPiCy91: If you don't believe me little brother check the internet. Google on ''Smith sisters murdered anonymously''. h0tNsPiCy91: I gtg little brother. I love you and mom and dad soo much. I can't believe they kept us a secret from you. The boy checked the closet. He saw the carvings. Was it true? He surfed the internet and information was there about the anonymous murder in the house. The next morning the boy went downstairs. It was so quiet. Maybe his parents were sleeping. Hours later the boy found his parents in their closet skinned and hung. Then he found more carvings on the ground. They said ''I TOLD YOU I WASN'T LYING LITTLE BROTHER, I LOVED MOM AND DAD.... BUT THEY KEPT ME A SECRET. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT. WELL I'M FREE FROM THIS COLD WORLD, I WON'T HURT YOU LIKE I HURT THEM. I LOVE YOU!"This is a death chain letter. If you don't repost this in the next hour, the parents will kill you at night. They will kill you! DONT BELIEVE ME LOOK IT UP ON GOOGLE
Cool edit: chain letters can make an italian dinner
Story continued: The boy felt fear looking at the corpses of his parents. He didn't know what to do. He was scared out of his mind. What if his "sister" came after him next?! He looked up at his parents corpse one more time. This time he felt anger. He felt hatred like he had never felt before. And now the boy knew what he had to do. He called the police and they began their investigation. They never found the killer. For whoever or whatever it was it didn't leave evidence. Just like the killer of the boys older sister. But the boy didn't care. He swore he'd kill the man who started this. And if his sister did come bafk fromt he dead, he'd venture to hell and annihilate their soul. Years later, the boy had become a man. A strong man. He was smart, handsome, fast and he did not fear anything. And here he was finally about to exact revenge. For he had found the original killer. He was Jack Santiego. A kid his sister knew in highschool but jack never had the guts to ask her out. He was bullied for years and he finally snapped and killed his sisters. How did the man know this? Google. That's how. So he departed, and found the killers house in the dead of night. And just like the killer had broken into his siters house, he broke in the same way and he found jack sleeping in his room. And his room was something you'd see from a nightmare. There was human and animal skin hanging on the walls. So were severed heads and hands. He knew that this man had to die. Jack noticed the man and got up. But no fear or suprise was on his face. His sick mind wanted a new victim and here he was. Jack was big. Very muscular and at the height of 6'10". Jack grabbed his knife and charged at the man. He was fast but the man was faster. With a quick dodge, the man punched jack with all his might right in the stomach. Jack reeled from the damage which was tremendous. The man was stronger than jack. That strength was fueled by vengenance and hatred. The man picked up the knife and drove it down the back of jacks neck. And kicked jack to the floor. He pulled out his 12 gauge shotgun and blew jacks head away. He shot at hacks head until it was all but a splattered mess of blood and brains. The man looked around the room at jacks victims. You are avenged, he said. And the souls of those victims appeared and thanked the man for this, and so they could rest in peace. The man took all of jacks "souvenirs" and buried them in the closest cemmetry. He was now the avenger. Two years later he dedicated his life, traveling around the world avenging people like jacks victims. Avenging people who're victims of injustice, evil, greed and extreme discrimination. And when he traveled to south africa he found a man who knew the spells to open up a portal to hell. Why was the avenger interested in this? Because his oldest sister was down there. He did not wish to go after his middle sister for she had nothing to do with those murders and because she rest in peace. But his oldest sister? It was about bloody time he had revenge for what she did. The avenger paid the village a huge sum of money since he was a billionaire now in return for the village spell caster to open up a portal to hell for him. And the deal was struck. It took several hours but the gate was opened. And after paying and learning how to come back to earth he walked in. Ready to fulfill his destiny. Ready to exact revenge.
