[/quote] The fact that he's holding the ball is because of some fact of physics or chemistry or pain tolerance. Or it could be that by holding the ball, he's squelching out the oxygen where his hands/fingers make contact, and doesn't allow a flame, coupled with the fact that the flame is burning lighter fluid/fumes and not the cloth itself.
