What Questions do you have about Arena?

What questions do you guys have that you hope are answered in the update today? Ferrex was nice enough to drop in and answer questions from the community here is what he was nice enough to tell all of the Bnet users: 1.If you and your friends are in different leagues you can still play together. 2.Format will be 2v2,4v4...but they arent limited to just those formats (btb type maybe?) 3.Divisions are not set by rank milestones (like how H3 you needed X amount of EXP and a Level __ to be a ____) 4.Playlists support Spartans Only, Elites Only, various mixtures, player selection, et cetera. 5.Arena playlists will probably not mix the two. 6.Each season (probably a month) the ranks will be reset in Arena and will be placed in your Service Record both in-game and on Bungie.net (baseball card like said in Shacknews article) 7.Maps and gametypes can be tweaked for the seasons on Bungie's discression but nothing should be ruled out for the playlist yet. 8.Objective isn't in the Arena yet mostly because it is hard to establish "who did better on the team" because they have to add in flag captures and stuff. 9.The Arena system is for honor and glory. Basically it adds more of depth to gameplay and stops the fat kids on second accounts. 10.All divisions are skill based so not everyone will hit the top division (i.e. level 50) 11.All rank beside the divisions will be hidden because Bungie is using a pure truskill system. 12.Players will be starting with very similar starting weapons if not the exact same (speculate if you will) 13.It will be harder to exploit the Arena system 14.That being said the Banhammer is still evolving. 15.Maps will be tweaked a little for Arena playlist. 16.Winning in team games still matters. But turning in a poor performance on a winning team (i.e., being carried by more skilled teammates) will not be a good way to level up. 17.As soon as are Rated on enough Days (e.g., 5 days), you'll see what Division you're in. You can go up or down from there, but it'll give you some idea of who your peers are. 18.Arena rank will work completely seperate from other playlists. 19.Arena games will still go in theatre mode. 20.Players wont be able to boost by switching languages anymore. 21.There are no plans to implement a clan system specifically for Arena. If we did Clan support (not saying we are, mind you), we would support them across the board 22.Currently the only playlists which will display a playlist specific ranking/rating/etc are Arena. (I dont know if this means all other ranks will be hidden which could be disapointing0 23.Arena will be present in the Beta 24.Still a chance of an MLG playlist. 25.Divisions arent permanent you will start right at 0 each season even if you were in Onyx. 26. Quitting will count as a loss, and if you do it too much, the Banhammer will apply a special new kind of punishment targeted specifically at quitters. 27.Bungie Staff feels the need of margeritas to answer calls from the community (speculation?) 28.Vetoing in Arena will be more for picking the map then map/gametype. Well if you didnt go answers in the update you have no complaints now. [Edited on 03.19.2010 2:58 PM PDT]

 • I have a question about Arena. Rather than make a new thread on it, I decided to use this one. So, I'm very confused on how the Arena rates you accurately. Many people say that Arena is broken because it rates you not by wins/losses, but by individual player performance, which is bad. Why is it that Arena rates players on their individual performance, and how does that accurately reflect skill and teamwork?

 • I got up to lvl 49 and the only reason I left halo 3 was to play mw2. I wouldn't played halo 3 as long if there wasn't a visible rank. It's due to the visible rank that made it even better. Halo 2 had an awesome system if there wasn't so much cheating. [Edited on 05.09.2010 2:12 AM PDT]

 • Wait, so does Trueskill reset at the end of each season also? Because that means for the first couple of games you play each season you're playing people who aren't anywhere near as good as you are. Whether that be a good or bad thing, its still unfair.

 •
Posted by: HOB594 Will there be forge in Halo Reach? The thing that made Halo 3 such an amazing game was it's forge abilities, now are you bringing it back? One more, will Firefight be added into this new game with some matchmaking? Or is that the new Invasion?
nvm [Edited on 04.04.2010 3:19 PM PDT]

It's very hard to do so--who did more, the person who capped the flag, or the person who defended the base? We're starting with Slayer because it is (relatively) easy to distill into ratings. The importance of this will be more evident once the Arena is live. :) I'm sure the forums will help us discuss the subject in the future. Our playlists are, as ever, very adaptive and evolving things.
I'm not feeling this post. You're not going to include great, competetive gametypes because it doesn't work out with the ranking system? Is there going to be a playlist where we can play good competetive objective games?
There's more factors to consider in Objective, like whether someone was taking hold of the flag/bomb/skull, how much someone protects the objective, etc. Just trying to rank someone using slayer standards in an objective game doesn't fit, when they figure out the correct way to implement Objective into the system, then they'll add it in.

 • For telling whether or not the guy who defended the base on a CTF game is if you could make it to where there was certain diameter you could put around the flag, and if you kill an enemy player within that diameter you get a medal. But it would be hard putting a diameter or space on the map just for that. Im just throwin ideas.

 • So the arena system works through an unseen trueskill rating? In which, as you play through a season, it raises and puts you into higher divisions (Onyx being the highest)? And once a season ends, ur rating resets and u start over for the next season? Sorry, I know this has probably all been discussed but it's been hard to keep track with all my school work since the semester is ending.

Why move away from a numerical based skill system?
If you think visible skill level gives motivation to play, then tell me why the popualtion of Halo 3 is going down? It's because Halo 3 is getting boring now.
Well I can pretty much guarantee that the majority of the competitive community feel the same. Maybe the population is going down because Halo has been out for 3 years. Not because of visible high skill.
Posted by: ferrex
Posted by: Gig4t3ch What would happen if I were Onyx division and chose to search with a friend who hadn't played a game of Halo yet? Would I get matched with players in Onyx division or players in lower divisions?
They will match with Onyx players, equal to the highest player in the party. The Arena is not a place to bring a date.
Let's say I'm playing a game of Halo 3 ranked, I'm a 20 and I get matched up against 30's and win, I've noticed that it is more likely for me to rank up then if they were lower ranks. Does this mean the same for the Arena? If an Onyx drags a "noob" into a game of arena, and they manage to hold their ground against Onyx-ranked players, will they advance quicker? Edit: Question was already asked and answered. Disregard this :) [Edited on 03.26.2010 5:49 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Ollie
Posted by: i RROD Dang I missed ferrex. I don't have the time to read through each page of this thread but I was going to ask him if the players who were banned in halo 3's file share remain banned for the "NEW AND IMPROVED" file share in Reach? I think all of us who have been banned deserve a second chance to use our file shares. To be totally honest, i think we should have all been given a warning first. I wasn't even aware that I had an illegal picture in my file share... but yeah... if anyone knows the answer to my question please respond.
If you've misused your file share once then you will mostly misuse it again.
Not necessarily. We deserve a warning for misusing our file shares Bungie. Kids can host boot for years and still have a fully active account but, I put a single pic that I have seen in 30+ other file shares into mine for a single night and my file share gets permanently banned...? That is pretty damn ridiculous.

 • ok will weapons have effencint rating on performance take all weapons and distance apone where it being used will have time range on fastest use. take ar in halo 3 in most effect range its 4 sec, and worst case be 8 secs before reloading. will this game take accuracy *rate of fire + (head shot = 1 or bodie shot = 0) into account to find a 100% effectiveness use of weapon. Ar would have 100% accuracy which would equal 16 rounds and there be distance which fastest rate can be pulled with 100% accuracy. so you use 100% effective with this weapon. now this not include kills becuase even being 100% doesn't mean a kill.

 • What is the extent of sacrifices made to gameplay performance (perceived latency, framerate, etc) in order to handle the amount of stat tracking and number crunching necessary to have an experience system like Arena's? [Edited on 03.23.2010 3:30 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Dreidelveis The nagging question for me is, How will Arena's rating system account for the intangibles such as,

Communication.
Positioning.
Map control.
Power weapon control.
Threat detection.
... Of course, these are just a few of the traits that show a good player, and there's no black and white way to measure them, hence why they're labeled as intangibles...so I accept the unlikelihood of these abilities being unmeasurable through precise and accurate means. But I still felt the voice my individual opinion regarding them.
Agreed. There are a vast number of traits/player decisions/scenario outcomes/stats to determine a player rating that could only be measured using complex logic or are simple not measurable due to the tacit knowledge of the game. But this is a step in the right direction for attempting to determine skill. Wins/losses do a lot for determining skill, but do fall short. If memory serves right, Trueskill only used wins/losses and ranks of players to determine the experience gained or loss per game. This skill system has its obvious shortcomings, but I think the theory behind it is that good players will cause their team to win more than bad players. However, this theory can be flawed when you factor in going into games alone vs. partied up. If a player were to go into every game alone, the aggregate ratio of bad teammates vs. good teammates you had would be 1. But in reality the party concept forces that number either up or down, and makes your Trueskill either higher or lower than it should be. Games like Modern Warfare 2 have "leaned" in the right direction. For example, their point system during a deathmatch game (the equivalent of slayer), what mainly gets you points are kills, assists, and winning the match, deaths provide no penalty unless you factor in dying enough to lose the game. So rushing to get your 20 kills but ending with an even KDR will land you twice as many points than if you went 10 and 0. I think the player rating will be a better source for player skill. It will weigh heavy the win/loss and the almighty KDR, which I believe to be the single most important stat in Slayer games. Secondary tier stats will probably be assists and saving teammates' lives (MW2 does this). If the envelope is pushed we may see things like obtaining powerups (OS, AC) or total damage dealt. But I think there is also an indirect benefit to be gained from this type of an experience system - A real time, unbiased, feedback of performance will cause players to be conscionable of their decisions resulting in better play among Arena players. Rather than just runnin' and gunnin', players will hopefully tend to play smarter and increase their skill.

 • Because the spartan and elite playlists are different, does this mean it will be like this for all gametypes including custom games, or just xbox live games?
