A begginer's guide to driving a warthog

***Expierenced drivers, feel free to add to and denounce things listed here*** **Long read, but if you want to be a driver that can consitently hand out running riots to your gunner, and go one road rages, this is a must read** *Thanks to: TACOaddict6969, XtremeLowz75, D0tsee, kage x on1, XtremeLowz75, heyitsyou, Majatek, 3 legged goat *
Intro
Many people decide that they want to drive warthogs. The problem is, they have no clue what to do when they get in the seat. I can't emphasize enough that you need a turret-man. A passenger is not needed, but may be nescassary. Never drive into a fight alone, and you will be doing decently. This guide will help you improve your driving abilty, and maybe even point out some things that you didn't already know.I hope it helps you, and that now you can actually get a wheelman spree! Just make sure you don't just gun the gas on hermorrhage, you'll flip and die without a second thought. Remember also to practice on maps, if you really want to learn some tricks, it'll be fun to do a flip over an enemy and land it. And NEVER stop moving, unless you're sure you're safe. Plus drive at angles, in order to prevent direc
Section 1: The gunner
In order to be a good driver, you're gonna have to be completley unselfish. What does this mean? It means getting less than five kills in a game, and having your gunner get 30. It'll make them happy, and you happy. People love it when you sacrifice for them, and when they get an unfrigginbelievable with you as a driver, you can know it was you that gave it to them. Its a great feeling, and something that should be in the back of your head. Never leave without a gunner, it will come back to haunt you. This is no walk in the park though. The first step to helping your gunner is to do what they want. Try to picture yourself as the gunner, it'll help you help them get kills. The rule is: "The gunner is always right, unless they're wrong." This statement is meaning that if they start firing, then go to where they're firing and let them rack up a kill or two. If you have a gunner you trust, then chances are he/she will only fire at enemies, so go where they're firing and rack up a few driving assits. You'll be surprised how competant gunners can be once they are on a rampage. The other side is that if theres a sniper, or an imediate threat to both your lives, either bail and return to your base, or head for the sniper and hope your gunner can kill them. You can tell if the gunner is about to die, you can see that their shields are down. The other exception is if they are firing at one enemy, and three are coming the other direction, drive right by the large group, maybe splatter someone, and then let the gunner clean up, and go back and claim another. The final thing to know about a gunner is that they are people too. If you can't communicate with them, it makes life hell, and will be harder to get some bigger kills. The key is communication, but when you can't you have to just hope that they figure out what to do. Give them a honk and drive at the group, stop and drive somewhere else, they will figure out where to get a kill. In every scenario, you should be driving away from the enemy, the turret is pretty accurate, and makes you a harder target.
Section 2: The Splatter art
The art of splattering, its something that can be your greatest weapon, and your biggest weakness. It can save your life, or cost you and your gunner theirs. Only charge at specific people, and remember who armor locks. An armor-locker can ruin everything if you're too aggressive, so timing is key. If you feeel the urge to splatter everyone you see, stop reading this now. Your goal is to get <10 kills, and >25 driving assists. Splattering is important though. The people to splatter are snipers. They are going to be standing like a statue, and are easy targets. Your gunner can take them down too, so charge them, then kill them. If they armor lock, try to avoid them, because being on foot jeproadizes the whole operation. If you miss, the gunner cleans them up, eveeryone wins. The way to splatter people that arent standing passively and sniping is to remember. If one guy keeps armor locking, remember who it is, and dont charge them. The way to tell an armor locker is to let you gunner empty some shots on them, and if they armor lock, then dont charge, if they dont, you may want to, but then the gunner is about to kill him, so who cares? Also, if a guy is just running around, no shots, he's probably an armor locker, plus armor lock has an EMP effect, so don't drive near someone who is armor locking. Splattering is not an important part of driving, and should not be thought of to be. However, it can save your life, so play a few games with trial and error, and you can learn times to go for splatters. The best way to get them is to get them by accident though.
Section 3: Driving defense
The things mentioned before were finesse things, things that really made it so you could be strong. This is perfecting those. You know how to kill an amor locker, how to rack up kills, but what do you do if you dont know where a sniper is? What if your warthog is about to blow? You probably don't know what to do huh? Well, I know exactly what to do. If you find yourself without much time before your hog explodes, just go get into a new one. If you're about to die, you have two options: risk death and try to get a kill, or flee. The answer for beggining drivers is get a kill. The answer for you is to flee. You might be called a noob, but look who's talking, a guy that just got killed 12 times by your gunner, and is now trying to kill you with their magnum. If you're about to die, just go to a hill, behind a base, whatever, get out of there, your sprees are in jeproady. The only time to charge is if its one person, and they're in no position to get reinforcements of any time, but even then the risk is a little too great. Take caution in deperation. But what do you do if theres a big group, you're hogs about to blow, and you have no shields? Why, you have to charge, hope for a splatter, have your gunner shoot them down, and run for the hills. You have to play offensively in order to play defensively sometimes, and when theres a group of four, an extermanation is right around the corner, and your gunner can taste it. Above all of these though, is the grenade. This is the opponents blackheart. A good throw can inflict a near death, and knock the two of you out of your vehicle. These are nearly impossible to avoid, and are the most likely form of death. How do you avoid them? Amazing driving skills. Drive around, watch where the nade is, not where the enemy is (the gunner is doing that) and you will walk away with victory. But if you should be knocked out with an enemy still standing, flip the hog and get back in it. If you're gunner is there, great, if not, create a barricade so your gunner can get back in. Grenades spell death if you're not careful so be careful!
Section 4: vehicle v vehicle
This is where people flail the most. *IF YOU ARE AGAINST A TANK YOU WILL LOSE, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO WIN.* The way to beat anything that can't kill you in one hit is much simpler though, and dampens the heart of anyone on the other team. The key to killing the warthog is to strafe. Its hard to do in a warthog, but getting your gunner to kill their gunner or driver is step one. Step 2 is killing whoever (if anyone) else thought they could sack your base. Just move around and have your gunner blow the warthog, best trick in the book. If your hog is damaged, run, they will beat you if they have a gunner. Beating a mongoose or ghost is the easiest. Mongoose you just drive after them, and the gunner will gun down the driver, and if they get out to try and hijack you, just do the backup trick, and they will be backing up to their spawn. A ghost is what will usually be thrown to counter you, although its not much work to destroy it. Just move around and have your gunner blow them to bits, confuse them, and have the gunner pound them down. Your hog will have more resistence than the ghost, and it shouldn't be too hard to laugh at their sad attempt. The hardest vehicle to kill is the revenant. Other than the grenade, this will pose the the biggest threat, and if there is one, I reccomend not fighting it. Just run and let someone else take care of it. The most you should want to do is clean up the revenant. But if you need to take it down, just circle it, and try to get it to miss. You have to know where each of its shots is going, and make sure they dont hit you. Two or three direct hits will kill you, your gunner, and your sprees. Its best to circle them, dont get hit, and not get hurt. The way to beat a wraith is to drive around it in circles, or strafe from a distance. The wraith is a hard-to-control vehicle, and unless they're a legendary shooter, chances are you're gonna be walking away with a win. Either circle it, which makes it so that the wraith can't hit you, because it can't move that fast, or snipe it, which because its such a big target, works.
conclusion
This guide has taught you what to do, but its up to you to use it. Your own style of driving may not follow this guide, but the general ideas of what I have said should stick with you no matter what. There are a lot of things that will take time to get down, and of course you wont be doing everything perfect on the first try (unless you are a sick driver, but if you were, why would you havev read this?) and most importantly, the gunner is your life, they are more important than you, and killing yourself for them is a very important part of driving. I hope this helps all the new drivers, and I hope to not see you in matchmaking, because you now will be a formitable foe! [Edited on 03.06.2011 3:51 PM PST]
