Inspired by Ender's Game?

I've started reading this book as I've heard any sci-fi person should read this mandatory. Anyway, is it just me or does anyone else feel like Bungie must have a high admiration for this book? It takes many ideas from it. It's not a clone by any matter, but it definately uses several of its ideas.

 • I believe that the story of Halo conveys many different themes, hidden meanings, and plots than any one that can be identified. It bores similarity in Lord of the Rings (some say), Battle Star Galactica (Others say), Dantes Inferno (I say), This book (you say), and a score of others.

 •
Posted by: Wolverfrog Halo is inspired by a lot of things. Such as the Halo rings; they were inspired by Iain M. Banks' Orbital culture books as well as Ringworld. Iain Banks is a great author. I've had the privilege to stay at his house as a young child, due to relations through marriage. (Shame I was too young to read properly back then, I would have loved to ask him questions.)
Yeah Banks is a great writer. I really liked Consider Phlebas and Feersum Endjin. If you like epic space opera sci-fi then I'd definitely recommend checking out Alastair Reynolds. He has a similar vibe to Banks. Chasm City is pretty much the most terrifying future dystopia I've ever seen in fiction.

I'm really hoping that Halo: Reach will have an Enders Shadow feel to it, showing a new side to the Spartan story.
Was that really good? I've only read "Ender's Game", "Speaker for the Dead", "Xenophobia", and "Children of the Mind". I stopped after them cause I got too tired of the same universe.
If you are a massive Ender fan then I'd definitely recommend Enders Shadow. If you liked the battle school style storylines then you will really like Enders Shadow, the Shadow books are very much military oriented. I think there are 4 books in the Shadow storyline, so it might be worth spreading that out so you don't get too tired of the franchise. I was really bored of Ender by the time I got to Chidren of the Mind too. There is a new one out apparently.... Ender in Exile. Its between Enders Game and Speaker.

 • Everything rips off of old Sci-fi books... Just look at Starship Troopers... It influenced Warhammer 40k, Mobile Suit Gundam, everything...

 •
Posted by: Klumpmeister hmm...now that i read it i agree...there are a lot of comparisons.
There's no way you obtained a copy of, and read Ender's that fast. I doubt you've even read the OP. Please stop making uninformed posts, lest you become subject to the asshat moniker. Your posts of late have certainly not helped to ward that title.

It is relevant because it discusses an basic outline of the SPARTAN ideas.
hmm...now that i read it i agree...there are a lot of comparisons.

 • I don't know if you guys have read any Iain M. Banks, but I've always believed Halo was directly inspired by Consider Phlebas - the first of the Culture books http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consider_Phlebas Not only is it a brilliant read, but you can see just how influential this book is to Bungie/Halo: It centres around a holy war: Idiran-Culture War The Idiran race are essentially the Covenant (more so the Elites) Ship naming conventions - Also, I don't know if you guys know this, but Bungie take their naming conventions directly from Mr. Banks http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ships_(The_Culture) Which is no bad thing ;-) I've never read Ender's Game (though I know there is a game - on the original Xbox - based on it) but I shall order it now from Amazon!

That entire plotline is an exact copy of Ender's Game practically.
Wait....what? Did I miss something while reading Ender's Game or playing ME? And yes, it is the second best book ever written, and it's sequels are awesome too. And I think anything that has child soldiers is playing off the idea of the Greek Spartans.
the HOW they are fighting off the aliens comes from the greek spartans. the WHY comes from Ender's game. If that makes sense.

 • I think the only similarity would be the training a super-soldier from a young age thing. But Bungie did not take that idea from Ender's Game. The reason they are called Spartans is literally because of the historical Spartan warriors (go watch 300). I believe that in Halo: The Fall Of Reach there is also a brief explanation.
