A Word on Casuals

Do you know why casuals are hated on more often than "hardcore" gamers? I believe I have a theory. Casuals (myself included) look further down the road. Most casuals probably figured that back in 2007, that 50 in Halo 3 ranked wasn't gonna mean jack sheeit in 3-4 years. Same with that 10th prestige in Modern Warfare when MW2 came out. Most of the complainers wanted their skill to transfer from game to game to game and ALWAYS be the best. The only time that's happened to me was the Guitar Hero franchise. But why do you think casuals are hated on? If you please, state whether you are a casual or a hardcore gamer, and say what you think defines a casual or a hardcore.

 •
Posted by: absolutezer052 I believe that, like everything else in life, this often seen casuals V hardcore debate is, less black and white than it would appear. Every casual is at least a little competitive, even if it may be with weaponry or an environment that is a little random, and every hardcore player can still enjoy a nice custom firefight with 300% jump height and speed, and 50% gravity every once in a while. That said, they are still two very different groups. Casuals would prefer a game where they can laugh at some random explosions or vehicular mayhem. Hardcore players want to know that they killed that player because they had a better BR. Although there are playlists that cater to both groups, in my opinion the basic, unchangeable gameplay mechanics are tilted towards the casual crowd. Compare a game of Halo 3 MLG with Halo Reach MLG (i pick this playlist because it is mostly accepted as the playlist most fully oriented towards the hardcore player). I personaly prefer the Halo 3 version of this playlist, the gameplay just seems more natural for this playlist. Despite my best attempts, you have probably noticed my bias for the hardcore side. Please do not respond to this by saying "go play halo 3 then freakin troll"
I would go as far as to say that simplifying people into either Hardcore or Casual is detrimental to the discussion. The way I see it, those who define themselves as hardcore are most worried about balance and assume that the casuals are not. I am not a hardcore player but you don't think I get pissed off when someone armour locks twice in a row or an equally cheap tactic? Of course I care about balance. It's ridiculous to assume that a bad player should be able to beat a good player, because then it's not even a game and it's not fun. That's literally the foundation on which multiplayer games are constructed. "If you are better than another player, you will beat them." Now, here's the problem. Casuals, due to the fact that they are Casual players, don't have as much as an agenda as the Hardcore contingency for obvious reasons. The only strong opinions Casual gamers have about a game are those projected upon them. Clearly I don't fit into either group. I only play a couple of games a week so I'm not hardcore but I also care about their grievances so I'm not casual. See where the problem is?
