Disc Unreadable [OP UPDATED 10.20.09]
Posted by: urk Here's the official word from our publishing partner. Sorry it took so long for us to get this out to you. We know this issue has been a source of frustration. Thanks for being patient.
We are aware of a very small number of customers reporting that their copy of Halo 3 ODST is causing a "disc read" error, which cannot be corrected by Bungie. Microsoft is fully prepared to address this issue via customer support. If you are receiving this error, please contact Microsoft customer support at 1-800-4MY-XBOX for troubleshooting assistance.
If you experience any issues or difficulties via the official support channel, please private message me directly.
Along with thousands of other unfortunate people, my Halo ODST disc became unreadable for countless times during a loading screen. There is nothing wrong with the disc, other than that the new version of DVDs are not very compatible with supposedly "older" 360s. If this happens to you, try downloading it to your hard drive. This only seem to work for a very slim amount of owners though, because if it doesn't work, then your console will be unable to read the DVD the second you start it. Also, there is another slim chance for it to work: If you can get one of your friends to host a lobby and then launch the game for you, it may just work. However, you will not be able to play the game solo. If the above doesn't work doesn't work, or if you just want to express your problems, then I suggest you message the user: Test Ninja Alpha, following the format below.
Posted by: Test Ninja Alpha Since different people can have slightly different issues, we want to get an idea of the various issues that people are seeing individually. For those of you having problems similar to this, please PM me the following: 1. A brief description of your specific problem and what you've tried to fix it. Please do not recap the thread. 2. Remove your hard drive and play through the same sections of ODST that are failing. Does that make a difference? 3. Put in Halo 3 and play through a the first few campaign missions (on easy, it'll go quick). Do you see the same behavior as in ODST, or does it function perfectly?
If you are not to sure about this problem, then the only sure-fire way to be reimbursed is to return your copy to your game retailer as soon as possible. When or if Bungie fixes this problem, you could rebuy the game and see if it works. ****EDIT: 10.2.09****
Posted by: urk Sorry about the continued delays, dudes (and ladies). We're in touch with Microsoft and they're telling us that you should be calling 1-800-4-MY-XBOX to get tickets up and going. They're still not 100% locked in on the issue, but they are making progress. But no matter what the problem is, they've assured us the resolution will be handled through their support center. If you are told by a customer service rep that they will not help you or that you should be going elsewhere for support, please ask them for their Customer Service Request # and report it to me directly via PM. Again, we know this sucks hard. Hopefully they can zero in on the problem and get you all up and working asap.
If you really want to contribute, please perform the above. And if you happen to get on the phone with an "angry" customer support employee, you should ask for their Customer Service Request #, so they feel more obligated to help you, and all of us with this problem. ****EDIT: 11.16.09****
Posted by: urk
Posted by: DEACON01 Incase many of you didn't know, but Halo 3 did have a similar problem with its campaign mode.
Since you're in the researchin' mood, you won't find it too difficult to drum up instances of DRE at just about every major title release as well. And we're not turning a deaf ear (or a blind eye). We understand that it seems that way, but we're frustrated too. We've got an open channel for you to communicate with our test team in the first post and we'd like you to stay in contact with support if you've already opened a trouble ticket. We're still in direct contact with our publisher as well to try to resolve this as quickly as possible, but unfortunately we don't have much to offer at this time, hence the silence. And yeah, I know that's aggravating for the people who can't play.
****EDIT: 11.20.09****
Posted by: urk Here's the official word from our publishing partner. • They... don't appear to offer this repair in New Zealand. sadface. Anyone else notice that after the dashboard update, you can get to the main menu of the campaign disc but not necessarily play?

 • Got up this morning to find that my system is repaired and has been just shipped out. Same system. No e-mail reporting this as of yet. Waiting for an ETA from the tracking number.

 • So, my xbox is still at the repair center (3 weeks and counting) in Texas and the only update that customer support will give me is that there is no update. I did some searching and found the number for the contractor at the repair center that handles xbox 360s. I put in a call to the number and left a message. I will keep you all updated with how it goes! [Edited on 11.16.2009 4:27 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: rsattler
Posted by: zapdos327 mine doesn't freeze after the first cutscene, mine freezes shortly after the first checkpoint on the third level. i come out of the building, and go to open the the blast door, and when i get close to it, the game freezes. help? also I have a big stain/discoloration on the multiplayer disk. HELP? Should i go back to my retailer and get a new disk set, or maybe even send it to bungie for a replacement?
Doesn't sound like the same issue we are reporting here. At the same point you are describing here, I get an "Disc is Unreadable" error message - that is what this thread is describing. Freezing is another issue - and won't be handled the same way by MS tech support. As to the discoloring on the disk, perhaps the best thing to do is return it to the retailer you purchased it from. Or, report it to MS via the support page on xbox.com and they may replace it for you but the quickest solution is taking it back to the store for replacement. Hope that helps.
actually my situation was similar to his. the only time i got disc unreadable was in halo 3 multiplayer matches and in odst firefight. the actual game campaign just froze on me. as for the disc stain you probably should return it to the retailer

 •
Posted by: Colonel Frag Well, campaign, firefight, and multiplayer all work without a hitch, so they did repair it. For those of you who are still waiting, I salute you and good luck. Anyway, I'm gonna play MW2 now. Peace out.
Great to hear! Thanks for the update. Just got off the phone with xbox support, they've had mine for 12 business days now... "Could take up to three weeks to repair." I said, "you've had it for 12 days, so it will be done in another 3 days?" More mumbo jumbo. So much for "we'll be expediting your repair". Oh well, at least a few of us are getting their's back and can finally play. I'll be playing MW2 also when it gets back, ODST will have to wait sad to say. With the exception of Halo: Combat Evolved, I've bought each and every Halo game on launch. Love to play them. This has been such a downer. Won't give up hope or playing Halo or Bungie games but this has left a real bad taste in my mouth.

 • Ok, finally got mine back. The first thing I noticed is that the thing is alot less noisy than my old one. I mean, the last one was like being in a wind turbine. This one, you barely hear the fan at all. The only time it got loud was when I was reinstalling the game to the hard drive. It's made in September of this year, so that makes sense, I guess. I'll tell you guys if they actually fixed the DRE later on.

 • Mine is on the way back, finally. I stayed on the phone for an eternity until they agreed to ship my console back via next day air. If your console is headed in for repair escalate your issue up the chain and demand faster shipping.

 • Is Xbox.com's support page loading really slow for anyone else here. At this point it seems that my repair order has dropped off the face of the earth. My customer service request # is no longer working, and the automated tech support on the phone is no longer auto reporting my repair order when I call, and I get nothing when manually checking my current repairs. I figured it might just be a problem with the support page itself right now since it's loading so slow. But I find this oddly distrubing that this happens the day my system supposedly arrived in the shop. This has already been a nightmare as it is. I don't need to have problems with having a semi-working 360 to no 360 at all. In short, is anyone having trouble using Xbox.com's support page right now? EDIT: Nevermind. I looks like the support page was having issues afterall. But that was freaking me out that my request number wasn't working. Have to wait for the actual "repair" now. • So, I just got off the phone with Xbox support...again. They told me it would be AT LEAST another 5 business days to start the shipping process for them to return my console. That puts the date for them to ship at OCT 18, 3 weeks in the repair center. It will be 4 weeks from me shipping to getting the console back. As much as it pains me, I am contemplating the switch to PS3.

 • Well the woman asked me if they e-mailed me something could I print it. My repair status says it's in the queue to be processed. Do they check to see if it has the ODST problem? Or do you think that they just get told what the problem is and they fix it? Or is it like the 3 Red Light s and they go through the bits? Cause I have the ODST problem but since then my games have been freezing, do you think that will be fixed as well or just what stopped ODST?

 •
Posted by: IVIuRkatron Yours was shipped back from Nashville??? thats weird, mine says it is being shipped back from Memphis, what does that mean??? new console??? cus looking at the time since i sent my xbox i dont there was enough time for it to get to mesquite and then to memphis in time for it to get fixed already
Sorry, Memphis is where mine is coming from too. I just didn't check before posting. Either way I think I may be getting a different console back.
Posted by: Westrunner Anyways, I doubt its a new console, otherwise the status of the repair on service.xbox.com would reflect a new serial right? Anyone clarify on this?...Anyways, if I were a person with this error, I would seriously reconsider sending my console to Microsoft. If I had this to do over, I'd just eat the 200 bucks and buy another Xbox. I'm starting to think of them as having a 1.5 year expiration date...
The serial number on service.xbox.com just says the s/n of the console submitted for repair, so I don't think it would reflect a new console s/n. I'll compare mine when it arrives today. I may just buy a new MW2 LE console later this week and sell my bro or friend my old xbox for $100, and just give them ODST with it. That way I'll have a cool, quiet, Jasper chip and 250GB of storage space and a superior game than ODST with it. ;) J/K (for the most part...)
Posted by: Haughmill Hey. Got my repair, after some yelling and arguing on the phone, she had to put me on hold 3 times and eventually said she was sending me a label. My only fear is that she took my e-mail address wrong. Does anyone have any idea how quickly they got the e-mail?
I never got emails about it. I just went to service.xbox.com and found the "Check repair status" link and then the shipping label was printable from there. They've never "sent" me one before a repair. I always had to go online and locate it myself. [Edited on 11.11.2009 8:11 AM PST]

 • I picked up a copy of the game a couple of days ago and had the disc read error as soon as I tried to begin the campaign or when I tried to load up a match using the Halo 3 multiplayer disc. Even though my Xbox is one of the older models with a 20GB hard drive I don't have any issues with any of my other 50 games. I did try to load the game without the hard drive and it worked on the first try, I will test further by playing most of the missions without saving. After trying without the hard drive I re-attached the hard drive and tried the game again and it worked for a while until I saved my game again as soon as it finished the save game process it gave me the disc read error again. The save game is not corrupted since I was able to reload the save just fine. Considering what I have discussed above the issue seems to be with the game code which apparently is not compatible with certain console models and/or hard drives. 11/13/09 Just got a copy of Borderlands which was released almost a month after ODST and it plays just fine on my xbox which rules out the theory that older consoles have issues with the latest batch of DVDs. 11/17/09 I can't believe Microsoft or Bungie don't have an alternative way of fixing this issue since for customers like me that don't live in the US, sending the console back to Microsoft represents and additional and unnecessary expense.
