Why do people commit suicide?

I can get the depression part I know how that feels, but why just leave? I mean if you want to escape why not just go on an "adventure"? Another thing, why take innocent people with you? Why not take out people who deserve it? *Cough WBC cough* Or do something to better the world? Discuss why people leave with a fizzle.

Lots of reasons. Some we may never understand.

    •
I mean if you want to escape why not just go on an "adventure"?
Are you paying for said adventure for depressed people? :) Traveling takes money. It's not easy to just go do. People take out others before they go because they're mad at something in the world. I don't agree with it or condone it, but I feel that's the main reason why. There are also religious reasons in some cases (suicide bombers), where people feel they'll be rewarded for their behavior on Earth. It all just depends on the person. The reasoning is different for everyone, and only people who contemplate suicide will really understand why they're contemplating it.

    • I know when I was depressed I wanted to kill myself because I hated myself and thought I was a burden on my family. I thought the world would be better off without me. I felt so much pain and sadness that I just wanted it to end. I thought suicide might be my only way out and I didn't want to get help for it. I felt like getting help would make me seem weak and that my family would judge me for it. Thankfully I reached a point where I said" I have to get help or I might actually kill myself." I went to the doctor and got on antidepressants. I've been on them for awhile now and I feel so much better. Suicide is a hard thing to understand when you haven't experienced severe depression.

    • Varies from person to person, case to case, each has their own feelings and their own reasoning, some of it reasonable, some of it completely unreasonable. Having gone through this once myself, I remember clearing realizing that "I dont' really want to die. But I do want to end my life. If the latter requires the former, then so be it." Like I said, various levels of reasoning. As to the "taking others with you"? That is/was and remains utterly inconceivable and beyond my ability to understand or empathize with. I can't imagine why someone would choose a violent, gory or potentially painful method either, let alone want to harm and take as many with you on your way out. To me, those appear to be.... clues or signs that someone is trying to say something other than just "I'll be going now, sorry for the inconvenience and difficulty."

    • A lot of people don't truly want to kill themselves. They want to make a change in their life and don't know how. Some resort to suicide because they don't know any other way and may not truly understand the finality of death. Take for instance all those who survived jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge (one of the most popular suicide spots in the world): all who survived said they regretted the decision to jump the instant they did it.

    • Clear all your previous judgments and think about this. Have it ever occurred to you that some people don't want to live?

There are a lot of reasons, some people have all sorts of kinds and levels of depression, they're violently or sexually abused, harassed maybe in the workplace, school, or home, usually when someone thinks to attempt or does attempt the only thing running through their head is escape from what is around them.

If the latter requires the former, then so be it."
This is a huge part of the process. Whatever it takes to get there, a lot of people feel this mindset. Sometimes people feel the way they do, and the way they feel is completely unfair to who they are as a person. I urge people to take more sympathy in this thread rather than just crack jokes and be dismissive on such a serious issue. For those who empathize with the topic, try to help counter some of the ignorance.

      • My friend's mother was telling me how she had a friend once, and her friend's boyfriend just showed up one day, picked her up, and they both went off driving. Neither of them had a license. Turns out, the guy wanted to kill himself, and wanted her to go out with him. They were found by the car, parked on the side of the road, dead. These kinds of problems aren't easy to determine. My best friend wanted to kill himself because he believed that he was hurting people, and he didn't want to hurt anyone anymore. He carved, "I am not afraid," into his arm with a knife. He burned himself with cigarettes as his form of self harm. What I've noticed is that people are belittled, and dehumanized to the point where they believe that they're not worthy to live. It's not just depressed children killing themselves. Bullies are a problem, because they dehumanize people, making them feel worthless, and it's horrible to think about. The mass shooting where the shooter ultimately kills himself is a sign of deeper mental instability. I believe they kill themselves in the end, because they don't want to go to jail, and deal with the consequences, the guilt, the eyes of crying mothers and fathers; that's something no one, no matter how sick and twisted they are, want to see. And with the glorification of violent crimes in the media, why not go out being remembered for what you did?

      •
I mean if you want to escape why not just go on an "adventure"?
Sometimes, that isn't enough. Not many suicidal people have the means or motivation to do so either. Plus, a heavy conscience isn't a burden many people would like to carry everywhere.
Another thing, why take innocent people with you? Why not take out people who deserve it? *Cough WBC cough* Or do something to better the world?
Again, means and motivation. Not only would it make the situation worse, especially if they failed to kill themselves afterwards, but most of the time they just don't care.

      • There are different levels of depression. The worse ones makes your brain constantly remind you that you are a worthless failure who no one cares about and the world would be a better place if you just killed yourself. A lot of (ignorant) people think suicide is one of the most selfish things you can do, I disagree. When facing the worse kinds of depression it is you get this thought stuck in your head, a thought that no one cares about you and that they would only be glad to see you gone. Those who commit suicide because of depression usually don't think it's selfish because from their point of view it would be better if they didn't exist (both for them and the rest of the world). The problem is that people don't realize that someone has mental issues until it's too late.

      • I'd say ask one of those who did but.... It's not something we can really know. I'm sure everyone, or at least a heckuva lot of people consider it at some point. But something is misfiring in the way the ones who do it are perceiving themselves and the world around them. Ignorance or indifference I suppose. With a touch of selfishness and/or vanity.

      • Be thankful you can think logically man. When someone is depressed, they don't see the world like that. They live in their own world, and man is it a bleak place.

        •
Why not take out people who deserve it? *Cough WBC cough*
A bit off-topic, but I am a firm believer that the best way to deal with trolls is to ignore them. And that's what the WBC is. I am confident that committing any kind of violent act against the WBC would help their recruiting efforts and the spread of their crazy far more than any of their ridiculous, easily ignorable "protests." If you want them to go away, pretend that they're already gone.
