Today is D-day
51 years ago today, combined forces from America, Britain, France, and Canada made the largest amphibious landing in human history, braving machine gun fire and harsh weather on the beaches of Normandy, France. Through their brave sacrifices and herioc efforts, the face of freedom was eventually preserved throughout the world as the -blam!-s were slowly driven back into Germany and defeated.
I'm very greateful to those brave men, not much older than I am, who were on the beach that day, taking place in what I consider to be one of the most important events in modern history.
I dunno, I just felt like pointing it out.

61 years ago is correct. I started reading [i]Band of Brothers[/i] last night. Incredible. I had it signed by Don Malarkey (lives down the street) and by Lynn "Buck" Compton, two surviving members of the 101st Airborne division. They are both great men. Don Malarkey's comments in the book inspired the movie [i]Saving Private Ryan[/i]. Anyway, if not for them and the millions of others who served during that time, this would be a different world. 300,000 Americans perished in that war (sorry, not sure about the other countries loses, but they were high as well). In the US, they are dying off at 1,500 a day. Be sure to thank them.

Yeah I realized that today is the D-Day anniversary because I recently got Mac OS X Tiger and I got the "This Day in History" widget for the dashboard.

ALSO it waasnt HARSH WEATHER...they waited till it WASNT bad...so i am gonna suggest you dont do a history lessen again. I completly forgot it was d-day until i saw this and looked i was like: "huh? its dday? holy -blam!- it is dday" lets have several posts of silence... [/quote] And I'm going to suggest the same thing to you. Conditions were FAR from ideal. The only reason they had the landings june 6th was because if they waited, the weather would be even worse and they would have to wait another month, or possibly until the next year due to the onset of winter.

Geez. Band of Brothers is one of my favourite books of all time, if you haven't guessed. My favourite part is when they find Hitler's staff car and test if the windows are bullet-proof. alright texas bin I KNOW they werent ideal but they werent harsh...I KNOW ALLOT... I HAVE WATCHED AABOUT 20 PROGRAMS ABOUT D DAY on the history channel and that was jusst last years anniverseray (sry bout that but im having a brain freeze from jackin off) and ive played call of duty brothers in arms and ive watched some educational shows on it on other channels and ive read some of two books in book stores on ww2 and ive been to historychannel.com NOW EXCUUUSSE ME if i said not harsh instead of not ideal. I KNOW they were rushed because of the storm that was coming but it wasnt like HARSH the way he made it sound. like in bastogne....NOW THATS HARSH ! OK THATS ENOUGH! I have met Buck Compton. He is a really good man. If you have the book, [i]Band of Brothers[/i], Don Malarkey has said that it is nearly accurate in every detail. But S. Ambrose did slander him a bit, but that is becuase he and Don got into a huge argument over politics (Don, a staunch repub, and Ambrose a flaming liberal), which is why there is no synopsis of Don in the back of the book, nor at the end of the series, even though he served more consecutive days in battle than any other member of the 101st. Don and Buck Compton are still best friends to this day. The visit each other about once a month or so.

[/quote] All too right. *Some* WW2 games are a good [i]tribute[/i] to the men that went off to war and died for our freedom, but they are far from the real dipiction of war or, dare I say, historical references. Personally, I've read several books on WW2 including: [u]Citizen Soldiers[/u] by Stephen E. Ambrose, [u]On to Berlin[/u] by General Gavin, and I've just begun the [u]Band of Brothers[/u]. Read up, learn, and become less ignorant than you already are. And trust me, "you already are."
