[b]As the game industry evolves into the next generation and the visuals keep getting better, it's harder and harder for an employee to survive unless he or she has very strong basic art skills. This means they have to be able to draw or model very well. Sometimes you meet people that stopped drawing at 16 and started modeling in 3dsMax -and have been modeling for 10 years. So they're great artists but they aren't great on paper. This isn't very common though, and the best advice I can give is that you need focus on your artistic skill set (drawing, modeling, etc) first, and worry about technical tools of the trade second. They're both important but the art takes priority.[/b]

Your biggest improvement as an artist will probably happen from 13-20 years old. The more you train yourself during this time, the better you will be the rest of your life. If you play a lot of games, work on your art skills, take classes, and keep at it, there's a great chance you can have your dream job. It's not as hard as it seems... I'm more of an artist (Starting Photoshop) and less of a engineer, but I don't know what to consider in universities and such. Can anyone help me?" [b]This is a huge topic, but in general anyone interested in a career in games as an artist, needs to have very strong traditional art skills. This means you need to be able to draw better than the other kids, and it helps if you can draw better than anyone else in your school. Spend as much time with a sketch pad, any spare time you have should be spent training yourself. Art is one of the few skills you can train yourself at any time you want for almost nothing. But classes are also important for learning art theory and new media. If your art basics are strong and you're technical, everything else will fall into place. All the software in the world will be useless if you aren't a solid artist underneath. Hope this helps.[/b]

  • "oo I almost forgot. As a map builder you must bring balence, art, playibility and stop us from escaping the map that must be a real chalenge. Do you take it opon yourself to make it as difficult as posible to escape the confines of a map because you do a very good job and still make the maps fun to play and good to look at with the help of your co-workers. " [b] I didn't work on the Halo games. My last project was Uncharted: Drake's Fortune where I was lead environment artist. As for getting out of the world, it's one of the hardest things to debug usually, since there are so many little places to slip through the cracks. Most of these "holes" get fixed during the beta phase of the project (the last couple of months). At least they did at Naughty Dog, we'll see how Bungie does things...[/b]

[Edited on 01.15.2009 3:27 PM PST]" [b]Most studios have "designers" who's job it is to lay out the very basic flow of the map, objectives, enemies, triggered events, etc. These guys are responsible for the "fun" part, the gameplay, and the overall feel of the level. The environment artist works with the designer to make sure the "fun" also looks really cool and fits into the overall look of the game. Environment artists need heavy design skills because of how much their work influences the gameplay.[/b] [Edited on 01.26.2009 3:27 PM PST]

Were the interviewers also testing your stamina and to see how well you can think under strenuous pressure? That is definitely a thorough interview and being Bungie, they only want the best. I would like to know; did the interview scenery change at all? Or was the entire process conducted in one room without a bathroom break?"   • NIne hours? They must have found out everything about you! Like your shoe size, your mad Halo skills and knowledge, whether you can sing, and escape from hundreds of mini-spartans attacking you! What's a Sarkathalon? Never heard of it... And who is this Mr. Sark? And please, don't make areas unusable on the missions like they've done with the multiplayer maps! Like in Avalanche, there's tons of little spaces that you should be able to get into, but there's a little barrier blocking it, and it's happening more and more often with the maps. Pretty much the only thing I dislike very very much in H3. Please don't do it for missions in whatever game comes next! Still... Nine hours! That's like forever and a day! A very long time, but at least Bungie's making sure they're employees are the best of the best! [Edited on 01.15.2009 7:10 PM PST]
