There is no real difference. A civil union is a form of marriage (a legal contract between two people to create kinship).
And for future replies, just because you have a marriage ceremony does NOT mean you are married. Anything having to do with the church is void in the eyes of the state, which is why even if you have a ceremony you must still have a license from the state to be seen as a couple.
