Installation, Optimization, and Joining the Team

Note: All of this information is available on SETI@home's website: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/index.php First, you'll need to install BOINC: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php BOINC is the underlying program that allows you to run SETI@home, or other distributed-computing programs. More information:

The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is an open source middleware system for volunteer and grid computing. It was originally developed to support the SETI@home project before it became useful as a platform for other distributed applications in areas as diverse as mathematics, medicine, molecular biology, climatology, and astrophysics. The intent of BOINC is to make it possible for researchers to tap into the enormous processing power of personal computers around the world.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BOINC

At some point during the installation you'll be prompted to supply a URL of the project you wish to support. Enter: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu If you have any issues during this stage (more than likely you won't), there is additional information available in the SETI@home forums: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_help_desk.php At some point during this process, you should also be prompted to create an account with SETI@home (it's been awhile since I've gone through this, so if Goji or one of the other new guys could run me through it, I'll edit it in). Once you're logged into that and on SETI's site, enter the following address to find and join our team: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/team_display.php?teamid=364 A few notes about the group: While I can't find a specific creation date for the group, the founder, Endo, joined on May 17, 1999; the very first day SETI@home went public. Yes, the link does say "Bungie.com" instead of .net. In the old days, that's what Bungie ran with. If you try the link or enter the URL manually, you'll notice that .com now redirects to .net. And that's it; you're good to go! You can find a lot more information on their website and forums with regards to customizing your experience, but the main one you should consider at the start is choosing how SETI@home uses your computer. In the upper window of BOINC, select tools>computing preferences: Image. Here you can select options such as how much of your processor SETI@home will use (at most), as well as options such as when it runs and when it connects to the internet (the distinction being made because SETI@home can process data offline, but can't send it or receive new data unless it's online). In general, SETI@home will yield processing power to anything else, but if you don't want your processor going full-speed 24/7, it may be best to set the max to something lower.

 • My 8 year old laptop starts to cough out blood when I try to render the data for LHC@home at the lowest speed. I'm sure SETI will just produce the same outcome for me. Can't we just help Sanford out with solving compound/molecule protein structures on the consols? At least the PS3s GPU could handle pretty models during connection. I miss interacting with pretty molecular 3D models while listening to Sarah McLachlan.
