The second interrogator was given either a Supportive, Neutral or Suspicious demeanor. This was portrayed by body language such as smiling and nodding for Supportive, No overt body language for neutral, Shaking the head and frowning for the suspicious group. What they found was that in the presence of a supportive secondary interrogator the truth group gave more detailed responses about their job whereas the liar group tended not to add greater detail to their responses in any of the three conditions. This allowed the liars to be more easily identified by contrasting them on the positive/supportive interrogator. An interesting side note to the deceit group was deliberate eye contact lasted longer than typical eye contact. This goes against the myth that liars avert their gaze, when in actual fact people who make an effort of maintaining eye contact are usually being deceitful.
