why do ninjas not lock topics and ban people any more?

By this i mean. Threads that are in the wrong forums locked. And a warning sent to the users. And ifs still being done a ban? This is how the old site worked. Kept order and kept things smooth and topics great. Why is this not being done any more. Every where i go on this site its destiny topics every where and then people making topics about off topic subjects in the destiny threads. Hell idk if this is even the right forum to post this in any more. It use to be. I posted this to the community yesterday yorkie

  • Recon already answered this but my answer would have been, Bungie wants us to moderate our own view. I have mixed feeling about that. I do enjoy being able to make asshats disappear whenever I want but it bugs me to know that forum noobs keep feeding trolls. Ninjas were able to put a definite stop on these arse holes and save the children. I fear for the children.

  • Times have changed, the site has changed, and the member/ninja toolset has changed as well. Locked topics are a thing of the past. The ninja no longer have the ability/tools to lock threads. I admit, I do kind of miss that. It was a quick way to say "this isn't a good idea and so it is being locked in order to both close the thread and to give folks something to see so they can get an idea of what is appropriate (either for a specific forum/tag or for the site in general". But locking is gone. Warnings and bans still exist and occur more often than most folks realize. Unlike the "old ways" where a ban resulted in a locked topic with the warned/banned members post content removed, a warning or a ban now removes (in the case of a warned/banned OP) the thread from view. The "old-school" way (where the thread was left, but the content was removed) had the advantage (like I mentioned above) of showing other members that "something had been done". Now, with banned/warned OPs being removed from sight, it SEEMS like no one is being warned/banned. No "bodies" left for people to gawk at. Most of the ninja enforcement (warns/bans) come to us via the report queue. A much smaller amount of our activity (related to enforcement) is when we are cruising the forums and see something in need of our intervention. It's just a matter of logistics and numbers. There are only a couple of dozen moderators and there are tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of active members posting/reading the forums. It is utterly impossible for us to dive into each and every topic, scanning all of the replies and sub-threads looking for problems. But with those same tens/hundreds of thousands of members going into each of those threads/sub-threads, if they consistently use the report tool, they are our "eyes and ears" and their reports of inappropriate content, misplaced posts, or rule breaking content do make it to our attention and we can then act. The "evidence" of our actions is (as I mentioned) no longer left out to rot in the sun, but are removed. It's a different system, and has advantages/disadvantages compared to the old system. Our hosts are open to suggestions and the ninja are capable (and often do) offer suggestions, ideas and proposals for changes to make the forums/tools more helpful and effective.

        • I think in the months since this was posted note changes have been implemented on the website. I don't know how all of them are working because I use mobile almost exclusively, seeing as that is the most accessible for me, and mobile has not gotten better, possibly even worse, for what I use it for, and that's the forums.

          • The newer community really just doesn't learn. If moderation were as subtle as a brick to the jaw like the days of halo.bungie.net, perhaps some order would be accomplished. The updates since 2013 have accomplished nothing, except forcing a lot of older, better community members off the site.

          • I guess this Bungie's answer to everything... "make everything cater towards the casual player." Destiny, itself, is a casually friendly game. The multiplayer is not very competitive, the only factor in leveling up is grinding, and honestly since the new website opened prior to Destiny's release the Ninjas were most likely told to avoid strict moderation on the forums. I think most members of this group remember how easy it was to get a ban or warning, but I doubt they even hand out warnings anymore.

            • It's a disaster. And perhaps it's something the kids these days are used to but that doesnt make it the better system. Just look at the recruitment threads, a sub-reply will bump a post and totally screw with the order. And this is on a topic where it's crucial to be quick, to be able to find a group. So you have to scroll through a bunch of crap that isnt relevant anymore (as an outcome of people being retarded and replying to posts that are 2 hours old and where the poster ended the raid a long time ago). There are other glaring problems with site-recruitment too. For starters, it shouldnt be required. The pugs are probably outnumbering the "real" fireteams 10 000: 1 and they, Bungie, still refuse to implement matchmaking - or they're simply not capable of doing it (the latter being a tolerable excuse). But, if we're going to have this POS approach to forming groups, then atleast put some effort into it. There are currently several big threads for every console and difficulty. Bungie should create threads for every console, raid and difficulty and then prevent those hashtags to be used by members. It would narrow down the threads to roughly 20. Also, I'm aware of the third party raid finder services but out of principle I'll never use a third party for something that should have been in the game.

              • Something about being afraid of scaring the Newfomans off, according to the ninjas at least. It's absolute laziness from Bungie, considering how long it took them to change their vague forum descriptions to something slightly less vague. Then march in like champions deserving of praise.

                • Good topic and discussion. As usual, Recon touches all the right areas. :D Seriously, I agree with him. Especially this section...
What the site has evolved into is something that was (in the view of our hosts and I see their point) built to handle the incredibly massive increase in members and posts. Yes, things here were busy and the site was well-utilized back in the Halo era, but the membership and posts-per-minute are HUGE compared to those "good old days". If the site structure and features had remained "as they were" for this explosion of members and posts, I believe that everyone's experience would have suffered incredibly. (yes, even more than the suffering of long-term members who look back nostalgically on the past).
As a new Ninja but especially a long-time member, I couldn't agree more. And the site and community will continue to evolve in this new era.

                  • What do you mean? Offtopic and Gaming are pretty much Destiny free, as is Community/Seventh Column. Stosh said they didn't want to drive anyone away because things got out of hand, and Destiny posters were in just about every forum, so they did their best without warning/banning.

                        • Bungie's really pushing for the "self moderation" and "invisible moderation" system, which I think many users will agree it just plain does not work... Or at least not preferred would be a better way to describe it. I will admit that in some cases self moderation and invisible moderation can work, but I think users, at least the old ones, want to see moderation at work. They want to know that problems are being solved on the forums instead of just accepting Bungie's word that moderating is being done. It gives old users a sense that Bungie has control over the forums still and it's not the Wild West. Me personally, I like seeing locked threads, who's been banned and for what. It shows users (especially those who don't read the CoC) what is and isn't acceptable.

                          • This isn't really a traditional forum anymore. Some coot at Bungie thought it would be "awesome" to have reddit/facebook/twitter like features and "overhaul" bnet. The website is well programmed but poorly designed.

                            • This isn't your older brothers bungie.net. They've adopted the reddit approach of self moderation. It makes the website feel more familiar to the masses, while reducing the burden on the employee/moderating staff. However, everything else about it is bad.
