The Vex: An Alarming Possibility (pt.1)

Greetings, Killworthy Guardians. I originally posted this on Reddit, and it definitely fits here as well. A couple nights ago I had a bit of a startling revelation in regards to the Vex, based on what we know so far. However, this is still speculation and should be treated as such. If my theory holds any truth to it, the Vex could be one of the biggest threats we will face in the Destiny Franchise. You have been warned that this will be a lengthy read. ------------------------------------------------------------ Connection with ancient ruins on Mars and Venus Now, according to the Destiny Planet View website, there is evidence of ancient habitation on Mars and on Venus and the Vex congregate at these locations, and guard them jealously. We could assume that there was an ancient civilization like the Forerunners in Halo or the Jjaro from Marathon another theme in Bungie shooters. Or, since we know the Vex can time travel, the ruins are from the Vex building a base in the past—or they were even in our solar system before we were, even without time travel. According to the Destiny GameInformer article, Vex are possibly ancient and didn’t just roll off the assembly line. It is entirely possible the reason why the Vex are so relentlessly defending these locations is to make sure they get enough of a foothold in the past to destroy humanity before it becomes a likely host for the Traveler and becomes a real threat. But, this opens up another question: How could something organic survive on pre-golden age Mars and Venus? Mars has a very thin atmosphere comprised mainly of Carbon Dioxide, and Venus is a hellish planet with huge amounts of volcanic activity which fills the air with Sulfuric acid, and the atmospheric pressure is incredibly dense. So, either those planets were habitable in the past (Could the Traveler have been here before?), or the Vex really are building fortresses on pre-golden age Mars and Venus. They are robots after all, and could most definitely survive on Mars without modification, and might even survive on Pre-Golden Age Venus with proper shielding. But if the Vex are creating bases in our past, they’re just creating an alternate timeline, but in both timelines they have more than a chance at stomping out Humanity. I will touch up on this later on. ----------------------------------------- Hiveminds and utopian societies Judging from the way we’ve seen them operate, Vex clearly display hive mentality (not talking about the Hive race). Hive mentality is where a group of organisms acts as one singular unit, like an entire being made up of multiple autonomous parts that share the same goal. An example in the real world would be insects like Ants and Bees. Their structures have even been compared to anthills. I remember seeing a Science Channel documentary on animal behavior which touched up on Hive mentality. In one segment, a biologist mapped a chimpanzee’s brain activity with a computer program. When he mapped the activity of a colony of Ants with the same program, he noticed the patterns were very similar. This gives further evidence to how multiple organisms can act as one. Now, a Hiveminded society would be a utopian one—every individual would work for the betterment of the species, with no need for individuality. There would be no arguing, politics, or war due to a common goal: survival. Survival would mean ensuring the race lives on despite all adversity. This means resources, reproduction, and threats must be met accordingly. They may see the Traveler as both a resource and a threat, and Humanity as something powerful enough to usurp them, and smart enough to see them as a threat. Such a civilization on a large scale would almost certainly be seen by non-hiveminds as a rampaging, all-consuming wave of destruction and death. Using this as a hypothesis, the Vex may have had a bad history (and a long one at that) with non-hiveminded races which they subsequently conquered and eliminated. So, this may make the Vex not even bother to communicate with non-hiveminded civilizations and assume they will be hostile. After all, ants assume you’re hostile even if you step on their nest accidentally. ------------------------------------------- Alternate timelines, the FWC, and the scale of the Vex threat If you listen to Lakshmi-2, the Future War Cult Tower representative, she discusses the possibility of many timelines. "An infinity of timelines. If one timeline in a trillion knows peace, how could you ever hope to find it?" "And in each new world, a new birth of time. And as always the seas of war will be there too." "Even the stores struggle! From the black holes of their bodies, new timelines are born. Born into strife." "What if there were a single timeline untouched by war, would you have any idea how to live in it?" Source She also makes a mention of the Black Garden, which is known to be inhabited by the Vex. It should be a location of great importance in the story. "A trillion timelines, and all at war. Like a thousand red flowers growing in a black garden." The FWC’s knowledge of alternate timelines and the quote about the Black Garden makes me think they may know a lot about the Vex, seeing as the Vex can travel through time, and when traveling through time, you create alternate timelines upon your arrival. The Vex travel through time and space using warp gates, which means in every reality and timeline they inhabit, they would need to have bases of operation to house those gates. This opens up a frightening possibility: The Vex could inhabit a possibly infinite number of times and places in many universes and dimensions, giving them the resources and time they need to mass-produce their armies—and thus call in reinforcements at any time where and when they are needed. Think about that for a moment. We could be dealing with a truly *enormous* threat. The Vex could just overwhelm us with sheer numbers, summoning metal armies at will from any time and place. They could exist in nearly all timelines and universes. It would be a daunting task to stop them. This also opens the possibility that the Darkness came from another universe, or other universes’ Darkness is seeping into ours from Vex warp gates, aiding in its dominance and strength, disrupting the natural balance of the cosmos.
