The Sandstone is Shifting on the Long Road to Tucson 11. Thursday, January 1st, 1880 --- Phoenix, 1872 Phoenix, 1872 The year I left you, my love, I will send you the goodwill of a dove, And I will lay roses at your feet, As your heart falls through your stained teeth, Your head was beautiful as it filled with flame, And your eyes spoke sweet words as flowers circled your head, The coyote is never tamed, and love is best kept within your stomach, For the cacti walk the desert alone at night, As the Anasazi roam their haunts, I peer into the darkness of the Sonora, And my flickering eyes look back --- The Wasteland [spoken word of the "Burial of The Dead" by T.S. Elliot] --- Roses For the Witch I woke up by her side today, Her cold eyes were such a beautiful gray, It's hard to love those who, suck away But under her spell, I, bled away Love is such a, beautiful lie, Pity those who cry and don't feel a thing, Cause that ain't a way to, be alive, Walkin' on them eyes of the sun, Blessed with the will to never run, I, I have fallen in love, With the, With the witch, And I, I have fallen in love, With the, With the witch, I woke up adrift in the stars today, I witnessed a man, waste himself away, Muttered to myself, as I walked away, Walked right past a, crumblin house, And as I, walked on that lonely sand ridge, up high Children waved me bye, and I just smiled and joined the world's masquerade, Cause after the rain stops, and they play their little games, They'll see a swarm of flies, writin' their names Cause I, I, have fallen in love, With the, With the witch, I, I have fallen, deep in love, With the witch, After the rain, I met with the priest, Knelt before the altar, Asked him if he, knew peace, He laughed and gazed at the sun, Like an insects laugh hums, And as I walked far from my home, I stopped by the graveyard, To lay flowers for my witch, Roses for the witch --- La Llorona I met her on a highway to, nowhere, My mouth was dry and my throat was numb, ain't need eyes to see, I was chasing butterflies and kissin' the floor, dreamin' of some cheap whores, And baby I tell you'll run forevermore, Dreamin' of crystal shores, In the sandlines of the Sonora, Oh La Llorona, And as my spirit floats away, floatin' towards that godless gray, I learned to curse the day I was born, Forlorn, above the empty sands, And I can't, feel my hands as I, drift away, From this, haunted land, As bonedust is lifted in the wind, In my, many, travels, I met a, cockaroach, He told me, to envy the dead, For the weeds grow long, and the sun burns on, Like an insects high wire hum, And baby I tell you'll run forevermore, Dreamin' of crystalline shores, In the sands of the Sonora, Oh, La Llorona --- Hunting the Howling Wind at the Rainbows End I woke up adrift on the sand dunes far south of Phoenix today, at the mercy of La Sonora I was chasing La Llorona, like those who are sightless They whom are sightless will wander forevermore, chasing deities and idols in the desert, They mock the sun, moon, and the stars above, cursing bitterly at the weather and craving flesh like a Wendigo They dance around the fire as the Saguaro blossoms fall, celebrating the death of a new year, They are sightless, like a blind man wandering the desert, following the coyote out the eyes of Orion and through the mouth of Venus You are sightless, like the blind man following the coyote to it's den I am sightless, like the blind man following the coyote to it's den I am sightless --- Skinwalker(this song was scrapped, it expands on the themes of hunting the howling wind) Legend tells of the skinwalker A shunned demon, haunting the desert, He is my brother, Yee naldalooshi, shunning the weather, (AH!) Legend speaks of me, A shell of a man, roaming the land, Legend breathes within me, La LLorona, running from my hands, (AH!) She was within my mind, As I run from myself, creating the obstacles, I do not know I, As I run from I, I create her, (LA LLORONA, RUN FROM MYSELF, I CREATE THIS LIVING HELL, LA LLORONA, POLTERGEIST OF THE WITCH, I CREATE THIS LICH!) Pity me, Hate me, Pity me, Hate me, Pity me, Pity me, Pity me, (RUN FROM MYSELF, I AM MY OWN ENEMY, THE CACTI ARE SINGING TO US, DO YOU HEAR THE NOISE OF THE DUNES?) Yee naldalooshi, Anasazi, Metallic gray stench, putrefaction of the air, Ancient enemies curse thy family, As I walk these dunes, I reflect on myself, I have created this hell, as I run from myself, I have created she who runs from me, to protect myself, And all that stands before, I will destroy for myself, I am the brother of the skinwalker, the shunned demon of La Sonora, I am the stench of rotting blood that follows him, I am the fear of his eyes that reflect, flickering out of the darkness of the desert, I am the cacti that sing words of shame to unsuspecting wanderers, I am the shifting sands that encircle Jericho and Juarez, I am that which was before me and was against me, I am the man who lashes out against those who try to find him, I am the recluse who walks in circles around the sun, I am the son, brother, father, and mother, of the skinwalker (I AM THE SKINWALKER I AM THE SKINWALKER I AM THE SKINWALKER I AM THE SKINWALKER I AM THE SKINWALKER I AM THE SKINWALKER I AM THE SKINWALKER) And the cacti sing sweet words to me, To bless the flickering eyes that peer out of the desert, --- All the Pretty Little Horses Hush-by, Don't you cry Go to sleep a little baby When you wake you shall find All the pretty little horses Blacks and bays, dapples and grays Coach and six a little horses When you wake you shall find All the pretty little horses Hush-by, Don't you cry Go to sleep a little baby When you wake you shall find All the pretty little horses --- Tumbleweed [instrumental] --- Valleys End As I walk through the valley of the shadow of life, The cacti are speaking in waves to me, And my throat ran dry And my throat ran dry As I walk through the valley of the shadow of life, The cacti are listenin' to my footsteps, And my eyes crusted over And my eyes crusted over My lips cracked and bled, My eyes bloodshot with maroon red, Theres a coyote behind me, And an owl at my knees, And I don't want to leave this night, The mountains fell and trapped me, And I felt the weight of the moon above, And theres a coyote with me, And an owl roostin' on my brim, And I don't want to live this night, As I walk through the valley of the shadow of life, My flickerin' eyes watch my body, And my fingernails cracked, And my fingernails cracked, As I walk through the valley of the shadow of life, My brother's teeth sunk into my flesh, And my veins popped, And my veins popped And I've come to my valleys end [long instrumental passage] I was goin' to do it, But the guns full of sand, And the wiseman scatters bonedust, neath his hand, What life is there, in a desert of emotion, What life is there, in all this commotion, April is the cruelest month, crushed beneath the ocean, What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man, You cannot say, or guess, for you know only A heap of broken images, where the sun beats, And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief, And the dry stone no sound of water. Only There is shadow under this red rock, (Come in under the shadow of this red rock), And I will show you something different from either Your shadow at morning striding behind you Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you; I will show you fear in a handful of dust. --- The Sandstone is Shifting on the Long Road to Tucson Now the sun has risen, And I find the ground shakin', Blessed with a vision, Of gold in the hills o'er South, So I find myself walkin', Now that the sun has risen, And I wandered five hundred days, five hundred nights, Chasin a fiery blaze, searchin for the ghost of her, But I didn't find nothin' neath my spurs, Just antlers and earthworms, [instrumental] The sun has risen, --- Thursday, January 1st, 1880 Well it's been, eight long years, Since I wandered that fiery frontier, The coyote's long gone, And the owl still lurks here, And I found my witch again, And I found my witch again, Well it's been, too long, Since I seen that settin' sun, And the night visits it's denizens again, Thy kingdom come, and thy will be done, Cause I found my witch once again, ---
