I was going to make my own thread, but I thought I would bump this so we can collect all the connections from Destiny and Marathon in one place. I definitely think there is some sort of connection between the two. I mean, we were kind of expecting there to be, what with the whole Durandal, Cortana, Joyeuse thing (has anyone found any reference to Joyeuse in Destiny yet?) You make an excellent point when you state that the W’rkncacnter and the Darkness might be similar entities, and the ending screen of MI certainly makes an obvious reference to Destiny. But I was reading through some terminals on my own and came across something else which seems to be related to Destiny, and I wanted to see what other people had to say about it. Consider the following terminal from Kill Your Television in M2, formatted for easier reading and with missing parts added: "i have been roland, beowulf, achilles, gilgamesh; i have been called a hundred names and will be called a thousand more before the world goes dim and cold. i am a hero. she has been nameless since our birth; a constant adversary, caring for nothing but my ruin, a sword drenched in my blood; forever my greatest and only love. she is the dark one; the enemy and lover without whom my very existence would be pathetic and vulgar. her eyes steam and boil in the night (she is fantastically beautiful yet i cannot stand the sight of her). our relationship is complex and perhaps eternal. we met once in the garden, at the beginning of the world and unaware of our twin destinies (not the garden of Genesis, but another; forgotten, untended and now choked with weeds, unvisited except for ourselves). we matched stares across a dry fountain, and i recall her smiling at me before she devoured the lawn and trees with a translucent blue flame and tore flagstones from the path and hurled them into the sky screaming my sins. our reunions there are epic battles fought without quarter, often in the dark as the moon is seldom visible and the sun never. i powder a granite monument in a soundless flash, showering the grass with molten drops of its gold inlay, sending smoking chips of stone skipping into the fog. she splinters an ancient oak with a force that takes my breath and hurls me to the ground. she leaves and i lie in the slow rain of burning slivers of wood, staring at the low, dark clouds, craving our next meeting." You can find out more about the terminal at http://marathon.bungie.org/story/kytterm.html, as well as the rest of the Marathon story on the site. The text is rather cryptic and hard to interpret, but I think it may stem from the same ideas which inspired Destiny. I think the speaker of the text is the Light. Not the Traveler, but the actual light with which you are imbued as a Guardian. Think of the first paragraph of the terminal. The light is within all of our Guardians, and they are all heroes. So the light has many names, all of them heroes. She is most likely the Darkness, the enemy of the light. That one is obvious. But the speaker (Light) and the woman (Darkness) meet in a garden to fight. The Black Garden? In the very last level of Destiny, your Guardian, carrying the light, confronts the Darkness in battle at the Black Garden. It is implied that this battle happens repeatedly throughout time. Perhaps Humanities struggle is only one of these battles, and it has happened many times before. Perhaps the four other races were once in our position, fighting for either the light or the darkness in previous battles. What does everyone else think of this? Any other interpretations? Any other references in other terminals?

  • I also forgot to mention the Hawkmoon. Does anyone know the origin of this weapon's name? The reason I ask is because Hawkmoon is mentioned on the page regarding the KYT terminal. The speaker of the terminal is said to have many names, all of them heroes. This was likened to the characters created by Michael Moorcock, who are all reincarnations of a single hero. One of these characters was Dorian Hawkmoon. A quick Google search returns only two types of results: the Destiny weapon, and the character created by Moorcock. This would imply that the weapon derives its name from the character and would mean another connection between Destiny and Marathon.
