The reward for pvp matches should have nothing to do with performance in the given game. However, i will agree that rewards from pvp are underwhelming. I don't play crucible all that much, but when I do, i'll get a blue engram every five games. That's kinda annoying. Rewards should be comparable to vanguard strikes. A pvp match takes about the same time as a strike, so when i'm playing pvp i'm kinda feeling like i'm wasting my time. Maybe something like a blue engram per 15 pvp kills ?(carries across matches so everyone gets engrams)
However, the issue is not pvp, the issue is the loot system in general. There should be a fixed, linear way to get exotics. For example, every time you win a crucible match, or every time you complete a vanguard strike you get a token. Once you reach hundred tokens you can either buy an exotic of your choice, or buy a totem that will guarantee, that next time an exotic drops, it is the one you chose.
In its current state, the rng system is broken. There is nothing more frustrating than hoping for a certain weapon, and getting the same exotic weapon you already have drop over, and over and over again. For example, I want a hawk moon, yet i've already received three monte carlo's. The system with totems would fix this issue.
To all of you who are going to say "you've never played an mom before, rng is inherent to them". I have actually, i've extensively played mmo's over the past 12 years. While rng indeed plays a large role in those mom's, there are countering factors that make the rng system fair. For one, usually boss kills don't take nearly as long as a strike. While in both a classic mmo and destiny the odds of getting a good drop may be at 1%, in destiny a strike takes approx 10mins, while you'd be hard pressed to find a boss fight that takes 10 mins in a mmo. And boss fights that do take as long usually have better drop rates. Secondly, when you get a weapon or piece of armor you already have, you can sell it. Which means if you get something rare you're happy, even if you already have it, cause you can just sell it and buy what you want with it. Thirdly, in mom's there is usually a way to get good gear while negating rng for a large part via tokens etc.
