This seems like the process that happens to victims of the Vex. Much like Kabr's fire team in the Vault of Glass.
They may have been subjected to the same situation as this, exception of Kabr himself, and then faded out of existence like they mention the Vex "erase" them which we know is partially possible in some places from the Gorgons.
It's really interesting stuff and I wish Bungie had given more of the story and background as to why the Vex have an organic internal core and a mechanical outside.

Another thing to think about, why didn't they change fate to the point where no relics existed? Making them have no weeknesses in the vault? Kabr forged armor and created the relic using his light but why it get rid of the relic all together? Maybe the traveller and warnings are working together to make sure our demise isn't forever? Maybe we are replaying events to ensure we survive and fix where we fked up along the way for the main benefit of the traveler more so then our own because it seems we are its only allies.
