I am very new to gaming (modern gaming anyways). In the first 4-6 weeks of playing destiny I couldn't break 500 points in Crucible. I worked at it and eventually could top the charts... since reduced to middle ranking in IB.
Recently I thought I would expand my skills by learning to be a Sniper, but I don't get how to do it in Destiny.
1) I find that I settle into a spot and end up getting killed by someone with a euros regime or other high powered non-sniper gun... whats the point of a sniper rifle if the other guns have the same range without losing mobility or sight? Am I doing something wrong here? An example would be sniping by C facing B on Venus map (maat mons I think its called).
2) it seems like there are not many snipe points, so if I try to hunker down, I get maybe two kills until I am hunted down.
Tips? Tricks?

You don't primary a sniper. What you do is use your primary and learn the map, learn where a lot of people travel and where they don't think to check. Pop 1-2 kills, then move. Hard scoping in a spot will only result in you being hunted down, as the scope flare tells people where you are.

I recommend not listening to the majority of the advice given on the forum. Take it in and peel away the opinions, looking for facts. Get a sniper rifle you feel comfortable with (test them in pve areas with lots of moving enemies, not in pvp). I like low recoil and a decent RoF, but you might prefer something else. When you're comfortable with your weapon go to the crucible and play. Don't go in to snipe, go in to learn the maps. Look for long sight lines and choke points that you feel comfortable trying to control and practice.

Final Round :))))

Pull a sniper out for moments when you know an enemy is about to walk round a corner mid-long range and aim in at head height and kill them as they come round. Then don't camp there and instead move around as that person will try to hunt you down
-
1) Yeah you're not killing them fast enough. 2) Solo sniping is tricky because you can't exactly watch your back; it's better for team play. The thing is, you kill someone once and don't move, they know where you are, so you can assume they'll come to try and get you. So it benefits to either move or have a teammate cover you. So, in conclusion, get good at moving around and aiming fast.

Waste mag. Shoot blinking jerk in ankle with final round.

Sniping does not equal camping. Sight-in. If you have targets shoot at them, and then move to another location. When you kill someone it shows them where you are. Then they or a teammate can flank you because you're not moving.

On that Venus map try sniping through C towards the caves leading from A, get up the back of the map on the burried tubs... move far right to snipe B and the courtyard at the entrance to B... As a sniper it's important you have a good primary like Suros Regime or The Last Word as the enemy team will actively hunt you.

You can't post up and camp in one spot. That's a surefire way to ensure you get killed. Take a few shots and move - don't try to run a sniper all game either. It's designed for specific scenarios with particularly long sight lines.

Some tips for you (All I use half the game is a sniper, sometimes the whole game). If you can pre-aim towards an area and learn where the head height is of spots, keep it there and wait for them. Never stay scoped in, Scope in for a second, scope out (while quickly looking at your radar the scope in quickly). If a sniper aims at you, a good way to snipe when you're starting it is to use your strafe (walk left or right, while scoped in) to get your aim on their head and pull the trigger as it swipes over them. Eventually you can start teaching yourself to flick your thumbstick to get quick snipes off and feel like a bad ass, follow the beginner technique and occasionally try flick sniping. Eventually you'll start getting kills and will eventually flick snipe 90% of the time. You want an Ambush scope on your sniper, its definitely the best. Short scope is great too but a little harder to use. As snipers one shot to the head or two shot to the body, you want a sniper that has a high rate of fire, low impact and a low recoil. I use Praedyth's Revenge and just switched to a Prudence II. Ice Breaker is a no no, high recoil makes getting a second body shot if you miss the head harder and it scopes in too far to be as effective as an ambush scope. Practice in PVE aswell, keep out your Ice Breaker and try to headshot as many monsters (vandals, dregs, everything) as quickly as you can, even through the intense recoil, this is a great way to start teaching you snapshotting. Also, for PVP more ammo is good, 4 - 6 bullets.

Red death is one of the op weapons you speak of. It's stupid that this gun can out gun a scout from range.

Prepare to enrage by what horrible connection + snipers do

How to use a sniper rifle in crucible: Equip felwinter's lie

All solid advice. I've read so far but make sure sniping is your play style if your a run and gunner stick to.that. I'm mid to long range type of player it's when I start running around trying to attack and press I run into trouble. Also don't hesitate on the trigger . Green ammo drops like rain in Seattle, so when you get someone scoped shoot even if it's a body shot your still getting points for assists.

Edited by PH0E: 4/1/2015 2:50:53 AM- don't camp. Destiny isn't built to have a bunch of sniper spots so if you camp you're pretty certain that someone you kill will pick you off real quick shortly after they die - move a lot. You can stay in a general area (my favorite is by c looking at b on shores of time) but you need to know where you're enemies will come from and watch for them. You should almost always be strafing if you're not crouched. - know your sniper rifles. Look at the perks and adjust to your play style. It's best to choose scopes that boost stability since you don't need to increase range in crucible (even big maps are small.) if you have Praedyths revenge use it. Also patience and time is a good beginner rifle since it keeps your radar up just don't rely on invisibility. - pair your sniper with a good primary like thorn (don't let haters bother you) that way if you get a body shot with your sniper you can switch to your primary for a quick finish - aim for the head. It's easier than you think. If I am zooming in on a control point I'll pick a spot on the wall that is head level or aim at a team mates head to help judge. That way when someone comes out it's an easy kill That's all I got for now. Good luck.

Don't settle, don't sit on just your sniper, move with your team. You likely settle in, your team rotates and there you are scoped in, getting flanked and killed. Being a sniper is a bit of a support role, land body shots and let your team clean up.

In a snipe off never put your head in the same spot multiple times and in a timely pattern, stay unpredictable use crouch and what not

"Oh man I have to see this guy's stats!" *This account has not played Destiny* "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

Edited by Flame V Shadow: 3/31/2015 7:56:28 PMPretty simple Try to keep your reticle at eye level at all times for easy headshots but at the same time strafe left and right Thats pretty much what i focus on-especially strafing Was able to headshot two snipers who were using praedyths while i had icebreaker becuz of strafing Edit: dont stay zoomed in Constantly go in and out to avoid being seen easily and to be aware of your surroundings

Shores of time near B the platform on the cliff facing C. Handy for iron banner

If you've used a sniper In any other FPS you should find it incredibly easy on destiny the auto sim on the guns the massive hit box on players and the fact that there's no sway, line your sniper up to headshot height and just strafe
-
It's not a good idea to be staring down your sights the entire time with a sniper rifle unless it has third eye. People hate snipers and will come looking for you, and if you can't see your radar you will get flanked and killed eventually. You have to learn how to aim down sights quick on people's heads with a sniper to get good. Or do what all the lame people do in pvp and get a sniper with final round. Load one bullet at a time and a shot to the pinky toe will kill your opponent. I really hope they remove final round from snipers.

Go get a IceBreaker and start Quick scoping
-
If you're gonna aim for the body, double tap the trigger so you ensure a kill. Do not stay scoped. The scope glare is a dead giveaway to your position and will get you killed. Check your radar. Keep a reliable primary on hand to deal with anyone who gets too close. Position yourself in a frequented area, like a doorway or zone, so that you always have fresh prey waiting for you. Know your sights. Ambush is probably the best all-around scope for crucible in my opinion, but use whichever one you are most comfortable with. Try to use the sweeping technique. Keep your reticle at approximately head height and use your right stick to sweep left and right to acquire targets. Once you master this strategy, I guarantee you will be the most feared sniper in the crucible. Hope this helps!
