How to use Sniper Rifle in Crucible

I am very new to gaming (modern gaming anyways). In the first 4-6 weeks of playing destiny I couldn't break 500 points in Crucible. I worked at it and eventually could top the charts... since reduced to middle ranking in IB. Recently I thought I would expand my skills by learning to be a Sniper, but I don't get how to do it in Destiny. 1) I find that I settle into a spot and end up getting killed by someone with a euros regime or other high powered non-sniper gun... whats the point of a sniper rifle if the other guns have the same range without losing mobility or sight? Am I doing something wrong here? An example would be sniping by C facing B on Venus map (maat mons I think its called). 2) it seems like there are not many snipe points, so if I try to hunker down, I get maybe two kills until I am hunted down. Tips? Tricks?

  • Run and gun, when you see red on your radar, ads in that direction and if a guy appears, boom, headshot. Seriously though, dont camp, you make easy targets for other snipers

  • Look for teamates in trouble then try to assist them with sniper(protect from shotguns.. etc.) Or just look for choke points and aim head level.

  • use snipes with quick fire rate such ad praedyths eevenge. Im a sniper that do the Hit and run tactics a lot. if ur near cover, shoot ur snipe one or 2 times and go to cover again. swap to primary if they r close, and try to out gun them with primaries In sum situations, have ur sniper aimed @ controll spots or doors/ entrances, that helps a lot. tip: as a sniper try to crouch more

Don't "hunker down". Don't stand still. Honestly, other snipers that stand or crouch are immediately destroyed. This isn't like COD where there are good sniper points to hide in. Rule 1) always strafe left and right while aiming down your scope. Try not to move your actual aim too much and time your shot with your left and right movement when the sight lines up with their head or body. This is the MOST vital rule while fighting other snipers and helps tremendously while fighting anyone else. You're getting killed by Suros because it makes your aim jump while you're being hit. Strafing helps you avoid more shots and keep your aim steady. Rule 2) you're correct on this one - find 2 or 3 good lines of sight on every map (for instance: looking at point B from C in shores of time or standing on top of the hill outside of point A on rusted lands) and make your way to these places after every spawn. Don't stand in any one spot too long. The opponents will eventually find a way to weed you out or start spawning behind you so after a few kills switch spots. Rule 3) Never keep your scope up too long unless you're using P&T or a sniper with third eye (I've only ever seen P&T with it which is why I use it exclusively in the crucible). Spawns change very often or someone will find a way to flank you if you've sniped them already. Make sure you drop scope every so often and take a quick look at your radar. Your primary should be something you can use well at close to medium range. Something you feel comfortable switch to quickly and turn around to kill someone flanking you. I use hand cannons but if you aren't good with them I'd recommend auto rifles since they wreck at close range. Lastly, the sniper you use doesn't make too much difference. If I was to recommend any it would be (in order) P&T for third eye, Praedyths for stability and then anything else with field scout and decent stability. Don't use icebreaker unless you're a Titan using the weapons of light strat. That's about it. The rest comes with practice. Happy head hunting :)

      • The pvp maps in this game are poorly designed for sniping. Find the lowest zoom scope you can and practice quick scoping.

        • i use patience and time - third eye is definitely a snipers game changer... i am devoted to sniping - ranked out the last two iron banners with PaT... now i got gheleons demise(luck in the chamber, explosive rounds, firefly) and the knucklehead helmet... i save bladedancing until the other team swarms me... there are alot of great spots on every control and clash map - control is where you master your sniping game though...

        • Don't be a dedicated sniper cause then your being "that guy" but if you want to roll with a handcannon sniper combo and want to snipe effectively then map knowledge is key, knowing different locations to post up map to map is all it is. Also having a sniper you feel comfortable with, like I seem to do better with snipers that have some recoil for whatever reason guess it makes me focus on the one shot a little more.

This is not one of the easiest games to pull it off in(PvP I mean). You want to kill the sniper mentality and think more like a designated marksman. Move with the team and use the lowest zoom. Another good idea is to find one rifle you really like and get used to it. You can't really be effective in crucible camping as the maps are not built with traditional 'sniping' in mind(long range, clean line of sight). Hope that helps and good luck! :)

        • As has been said, be on the move, use the lowest zoom available, head shots are super important with the high DPS rate of other guns, even at range.

        • Movement is key like the others have said. But when you move, rotate with your team. Always watch your teammates too. If you're sniping, you need to do so to help your team. Also, when changing positions be aware of the old position. 9 times out of 10, somebody will come to confront you. If you move out of that area and ambush them, you win the battle. Get Praedyth's Revenge if you don't have it. It is one of the best snipers in crucible. Fast handling speeds with a 6 round mag and good sights.

        • Don't always stay in the same spot especially after getting someone. When you die you are shown who killed you. If your victim sees that you aren't moving they may go in for the kill. I've gotten several snipers that way.

        • How to snipe in Destiny: Step One: Look at the map you are playing on. Step Two: If said map is not Skyshock, switch to a Shotgun/Fusion Rifle. If said map is Skyshock, continue to Step Three Step Three: Wreck Shit.

I roll with a sniper but it is by far the worst aspect of my game. What I've learned is to be truly effective with it requires a lower sens probably in the 4-6 range. I play on 10 and I miss alot of shots because of it. Also if you miss a few shots in a snipe battle move to another angle. Other than that, practice will get you better. Don't be the kid that sits on on spot sniping all game, use it as a long range tool while moving about the map. Also get a Praeds revenge, sniping is so much harder without one. Mainly because everyone is using them that snipes and without it your at a significant disadvantage.

          • 1. Hide like a bitch and never move 2. Be sure if in a purpose match, don't help your team. 3. Take a screenshot of your uber and put it on the fridge next to your B on the spelling test.

            • I smile aggressively. I do go to points that have a longer range, but I normally put on a low zoom scope and try to stay just behind the firefight.

            • I use Angel of Light and Snipe guardians and other snipers from far away. Doing ths Thorn bounty I became really good at it and recorded a couple disrespectfull kills on my PS4. Its fun but not every map is good for this.

              • Don't camp in one place too long. Play control and learn the best places to cover the objective from. Don't stay in your scope too long. Look at your radar occasionally. Don't use your sniper rifle when someone is close. Don't go for head shots if they are shooting and hitting you, two rapid shots to the body is easier when you are being shot. Learn to strafe while scoped.

              • You've basically got to operate guerrilla-warfare with sniper rifles if you want to actually do well with it. The thing is, any time you kill somebody they know exactly where you are and in most cases, people hate being sniped so much that no matter what else is going on they will try to make it back to your position to flank and kill you out of spite. I guess a few useful tips would be: 1. Stay mobile. If you're hunkered down in one spot for too long, people are quick to become keen to it. If you're constantly changing positions you'll be harder to pin down. When they're coming back to where you were the first time you shot them, try to position yourself so you have eyes on that spot so you can feed yourself kills from enemies seeking revenge. 2. Exploit your teammates. If you have guys on your team that're keen on run-and-gunning constantly, use them as bait to draw out enemies that you can kill while they're engaged with your teammates. The enemy will be more likely to focus on the asshole blinking around with a shotgun or the dude charging at them with an auto-rifle than scanning the horizon for scope glint. 3. Scope glint is your worst enemy. Don't stay scoped any longer than you actually have to. Even if you're rocking invisibility by sniping as a Bladedancer or have the Patient & Time rifle that cloaks you...staying scoped in basically alerts everyone to what you're doing due to the giant red light coming out of your weapon's optics. There's JJ Abrams movies with less lens flare than Destiny's sniper rifles. Anyhow, I hope this helps. I don't snipe a whole lot but when I do I generally employ these tactics with a decent success rate.
