Why keep rares either way if you have been playing long enough your vault and most slots on your characters should be full of guns already.

That depends on how well RNG likes you. I've played since day one and only have a handful of exotics, and a slightly larger handful of legendaries. And with the cap on marks, it can hinder what you buy as well, especially if you had to buy armor from lack of drops. Then there's the sparrow and of course, weapons.
