The Failings of Bungie: You May (Not) Become Legend

After having played destiny for a good few weeks (Bungie shows a good six and a half or so days of in-game time), I felt driven to write up a critique on its major failings. These are both from my personal experiences and the experiences I've read online from others. This is a two part critique on the areas I feel Bungie has failed the most, though they result in the same thing. But before I begin, I'd like to say that Destiny is a good game. It's just that it could have been so much more... Destiny: become legend. Or rather, Destiny: become whatever is given to you and feel grateful. When I first went through the story, everything was new and somewhat exciting, but not only that, everything was different. Guns ran through my hands like water, and I experienced a wide variety of perks and stats and looks. But when I reached level 20, this all came to a halt. Guns no longer ran thorugh my hands. Instead, I was devoid of anything new, anything likable. Eventually, I found Xur, the Vanguard store, and the factions, and I began my quest to become like everyone else. The armor didn't have stats I liked, but I needed the light. They didn't have the perks I wanted, but I needed the light. It was going to take weeks to earn the marks to buy them, but I needed the light. At first, I didn't upgrade any of the vanguard pieces because I hated them. I held onto my energies and shards like scrooge with his precious gold, but in the end: I needed the light. By now, I've become much more pliable: I don't scrimp my ascendent materials, because more likely than not, what I want is never going to happen. Destiny has turned me into a pessimist. Whatever happened to "Become Legend?" Look at the legends in game. Kabr refused to be bowed down, and ripped the face off of a Gorgon to make a shield. What a guy. Toland pursued knowledge to the bitter end, eventually going mad. Dredgen Yor felt darkness embracing him, and decided to embrace it back. Me? I'm a nobody. A nobody in a sea of nobodies doing nobody things and buying nobody items. We run the same nobody quests and strikes and turn in the same nobody bounties. We're not legends: we're nobodies. When I look at my fellow warlocks, I see my face on every one. The one who molded my character molded each and every one of them, and we all look the same and use the same weapons. Everyone wears the voidfang vestments nowadays. There's no reason not to, and more likely than not, it's one of the few exotics they've had the chance to own. Guns? They're so rare, just like the armor. You either buy what Xur is selling or buy from a faction. End of story. You're "Legend." I don't feel legend. I don't feel unique. I feel empty. Which leads to my second point, which is the fullness of Destiny. No, this is not about the story. This is about the dichotomy of what I have been told and what truly is. They tell me that we are on the losing side. Earth, Mars, Venus, the Moon, the rest of the known universe: all are held in a stranglehold by the darkness. The earth is empty. The moon is calm. Where is the chaos? Where is the overwhelming darkness? Where is the need for guardians? Patrol feels so empty. I stroll through the hive for no reason. I collect spinmetal plants under gunfire because I simply don't care. If they tell me Mr. Nexus has overstayed his welcome on Venus, I deliver an eviction notice. Aksor broke his curfew? Reign him back in. The Psions got out? Put a belt to their backside. A phrase comes to mind "Born too late to explore the world, too early to explore the universe." This is what playing destiny feels like. The fall seems so interesting, but it's over and done. People like Kabr and Toland and Dredgen played their parts. On the flipside, the impending darkness is too far away to be dealt with, too remote to encounter. Our guardians live in a time of peace, striving not to survive, but to simply find adventure wherever they can. Guardians are not legends: they are bored. Strikes are boring. The dailies are boring. Patrol is boring. In the end, you do your weekly, your nightfall, your dailies, your raid, and your farming, and that's it. Evil doesn't care, and neither do you. You're both just going through the motions. The fallen aren't actually maintining strength on earth, they just want to look like it. The hive don't actually care about the moon, they just felt like building a fortress. The cabal don't really care that you're on mars, they just get their jollies from shooting off explosives. You're not really in a struggle for your life against the forces of darkness, you're just doing whatever you feel like. Where are the front lines to this great battle? Commander, send me to the front! I want action! I want to feel like I'm making a difference in this universe! I don't want to be an errand boy any longer! I don't want to post any more eviction notices! But there is no war. There is only mundanity and repitition. There is a faceless darkness that is halfheartedly taking over the universe. It will take over the last bastion of men not by force, but by boring us to death. Conclusion: I am a nobody being bored to death by a faceless entity. I'm the futuristic, space magic-ey equivalent of a man-child in his grandma's basement thinking he's sticking it to the man. In reality, I'm doing nothing, and the man doesn't care. I want to feel like I am the master of my own destiny, not like I'm living off the charity of Lakshmi (though she is very charitable, and I love her for it) and Lord Saladin (ty for the boots and gloves m8, appreciate it). I want to feel like the darkness truly is trying to destroy mankind, not like it's sitting on its respective planets, sipping martinis. I want to feel not only like I'm making a difference, but that there's a difference that needs to be made.

  • I totally agree with you, and I also think that we are not very far away from seeing an MMO game worthy of our time. All of these opinions are being read by some other game developer looking at all these mistakes and jotting them down for future use, I don't think it'll be long beofre some hole in the wall company releases an incredible game and we look back and laugh at franchises like COD and Destiny.

    • bump... bump... one million times bump! I couldn't agree more with everything you've stated. I enjoy my time in Destiny and I do think it is a decent game but the critiques you've pointed out in your review are exactly what I have been saying since late September. Maybe the DLC will bring much needed added life to the game, one can only hope...

    • Are these issues not with MMO's in general though? Because Destiny does nothing different than most MMO's out there.

      • very creative and very fluid use of words and an excellent representation of your feelings towards the game. however same thing ive heard over and over a hundred times. be patient how long has this game been out compared to when it will actually be finished? less than 5% of that time. your ghost woke you up because he saw you as someone that would be very useful should the darkness hit in full force. sure right now the patrols mundane, boring in fact how does a level 8 dreg stand a chance against a guardian with full raid armor and weapons. but should the day come we will be ready we have learned how to farm quickly so we spend less time away from the fight. we toil day and night in anticapation of stronger enemies and dier battles. though i hope peace will come and we can spend our days living among the people in the city. the ones we have sworn to protect. and sure all or armor is the same now but most of what we had was lost to the darkness and it will take time to rebuild our stocks and to find the armor of legends such as kabrs it took me 50+ hours of raiding to find all of kabrs armor but i found it and now i am distinguished among other guardians who have also givin their time and efforts to search for lost treasures while facing hords of robots that want nothing more than for their light to go out. and for what to turn our beautiful earth into a machine? not on my watch. be patient young guardian the traveler will give you what you need in due time. he/she/it is still recovering from a battle that took place while you were still dead on the road to the cosmodrome it will regain strength it will show us what we want to know. and i guess in the meantime deliver eviction notices and enforce curfews. we just woke up and the real battle may lie ahead. but yes it was a very good read.

        • Tell me about it. How did we lose the entire earth to the Fallen? Its not like we need supers to kill them or anything. Just shoot them with a gun, any human can do that. It's also weird that the last city is so safe. I mean these guys took over the entire earth yes? Why leave one city? They arent even trying to get around the traveler. Why isnt there anything about enemies attacking the walls? If Patrol is an indication of what the world looks like its laughable. Unless the Fallen have a weak presence in Russia theres just no way they took over the earth its ridiculous. There's basically no real threat out there. Everyday millions of fallen are killed. Tbe walls are safe. The people inside said walls are safe. Its like cmon make us feel like we are at the end. Halo Reach at tbe end of that. Fighting for as long as possible with whatever you can. Thats how every patrol should feel. Patrol feels like we are doing house work not going into enemy territory where our lives are at stake. It feels like the fight has already happned and we just clean up the myth of the Darkness. But lore wise we are fighting for the survival of humantity, which we dont see. We are just told. We are told Cabal blow up planets for fu . We are shown tbey are overgrown primates with shields and little intelligence. We are told theres a legend to be made. That our actions matter. We are shown no matter how many enemies we kill theres no difference. Wouldnt it make sense if you kill 100 fallen, stronger ones come out to fight you? Why let their numbers be demolished so easily. /rant over. Have a good Thurs people Loved OP thoughts props to you

          • People gave no patience ITS A BLAMING RPG LIKE GAME OFC THERS RNG LEARN TO BLAMING DEAL WITH IT. God people just because you come from games where theres a easy linear way to get everything, does not mean that destiny is bad. Look at diablo, WoW, and terraria. These are all very good and successful titles with RNG coming out the ass. The problem with destiny is that people like wont suck it up an realize that this is not the game that YOU wanted, however it is a good game.

          • I really hate posts like these. Repeating the same point over and over and over again... Fine it's boring you, we get the point. But find me 1 mmo type of game that DOESN'T make you grind for weapons/armor etc etc. Find 1 mmo that doesn't tell you to go from A to B killing stuff.

              • you know what i decided not to read after "destiny is a good game but it could be so much more" is that not EVERY game? is that not every part of life? me and my friends too talk about the things we would like to see changed or added or improved. and you know what most of the time we give constructive critisizm to the feedback forum if its noteworthy. did you say anything about being able to have it read at the bottom while in the tower that "so and so dances with the cryptarch" ?? because a legendary turned exotic? i didnt think so. im sure you made good points and probably most are valid but instead of spouting off to the community work with destiny in the feedback forum. alpha 232 omega 746 in game hours and i quit out of my games when im done.

                • Honestly man I feel just like you, idk if you'll read this comment but I can tell you that I have played this game everyday. I go on everyday when I'm not on im at work, when I'm not at work and not playing, I'm on the forums. And lately I've just been caring less and less about the farming and strikes and etc. because it's just the same thing. I don't know if you have have gotten a chance to go into the lore and back stories of this game but they are amazing man. The most interesting stories and just everything, except not in the actual game. We can just hope that one day they decide to add at least some of that story into it, and the expansion (if you're getting it) will be something new, at least for now. Check out the lore if you haven't though man, I'm sure if you go deep down enough you'll like it.

                  • This post has made me very melancholy. The game is fun, I like it, but you're right... what is really happening in the game to encourage us to continue playing? A normal MMO has thousands of quests and locations. We get a handful, and play them over-and-over again. Makes me sad that there was so much potential, yet it simply seems to be slipping away.

                  • Patience and time will bring what we want. At least I hope. I equate this to Star Wars. Destiny = A New Hope. Destiny 2 = Empire Strikes Back. Destiny 3 = Return of the Jedi. We have only just met all the players. Now onto other points I would live the world to seem more populated. Some epic public events would be great. And last but certainly not least. Drumroll please. MORE LOOT THAT ALLOWS US TO REACH LEVEL 30 AND NOT ALL OF US LOOK LIKE RANDOM TRANSFORMERS IN THE MICHAEL BAY MOVIES.

Great review man. Im sure most of us feel the same. I appreciate your take on it not just because of how accurate you are, but you took the time because you care about the game's future. It is a Great game, but has major shortcomings. Let's see what they do with it, or about it, from here.
