Let's talk about Thorn

Thorn is a handgun that has a "damage over time" (dot) effect. It is an exotic weapon which can be aquired via a relatively hard exotic bounty. Generally I am satisfied with the damage Thorn has. But it is not the damage that makes me think that Thorn should not be an exotic weapon. It has 6 bullets in a magazine and a reload time out of hell. The general situation in pvp for me is the following: There is an enemy. I shoot at him, I miss once but the enemy is dead. I now have 2 bullets left. Too few shots to kill a second enemy. I cannot reload because it almost takes 3 seconds to do so. So I have to switch weapons while going into cover. Even if I manage to survive that I can only switch back to my Thorn when there is absolutely nothing arround me. Now I have to switch weapons AND have to reload. This is arround 4 seconds now where I am cursed to wait.. If I compare Thorn to Lord High Fixer, I cannot say that Thorn is better. It should be. It is exotic and takes much more effort to get it than any other exotic I know. In PvE I think the weapon lacks of DPS. What are your opinions about that weapon?

  • I know where you are going with this post, and I am inclined to agree. Thorn is a great gun if you can use it properly, much better in the hands of a gunslinger using chain of woe and the correct gauntlets, but it is not significantly better than the legendaries. I too primarily use Lord high fixer as it is much more viable for large scale encounters in PvP, the kind where you are shooting multiple reds on a control base etc. The problem with thorn IMO is that its damage is lower than a legendary, to allow for the DoT, but the DoT does not stack. I found so many times that I lose battles and my target would have died if they took one more tick of damage. Also, There is no way Thorn can compete with the likes of Suros regime (not much can tbh, but I've avoided complaining about that thus far, will see what the upcoming weapon rebalance changes!) So, for the slow reload and heavy kick, you would expect all 6 shots to be deadly right, well currently they are OK, but not enough IMO. Again, the lack of stacking Dot, or even the ability to over penetrate by default means that the first headshot does 81 plus 28 dot, assuming 4 ticks of 7. But, the second shot then only does 81, and probably the third if you are quick. Now consider that not all encounters are 1v1, suppose your target has suros, red death, hungering blade or warlock melee and kills one of your teammates, thus starts to regen, you now have limited shots left in the mag and are far less likely to win that encounter. This is where legendaries such as lord high fair better, they do the full 86 per headshot regardless, are more stable and fire faster and have bigger clips, which improve your chances significantly. This is by no means a whine, I still love Thorn, was my first exotic, and I recently ground out a second for my warlock, but I do agree there is little reason to use it over its legendary counterparts. The deciding factor for me is that I prefer P&T for my exotic slot, and having third eye on that, and Lord High are better suited for PvP IMO. My suggestions for improvement of Thorn, as I have put on other threads, are: make the DoT stack, meaning every shot landed adds its own chain, Give critical DoT for headshots, say 10hp per tick. Have mark of the devourer prevent regent on targets while active. Increase the chance of staggering larger mobs in pve with devourer ticks. Have mark of the devourer over penetrate by default. (Has anyone noticed that this happens with multiple phalanx? Makes it quite useful for the mars raid!!) I'm not saying add all of the above, but feel any of them, with the existing slow reload and small clip would make each of the six shots go a lot further, and emphasise the need to carefully pick your targets, and time each shot well.
