Best Hand Cannon? is it Thorn?

What's the best hand cannon? I went through the pain of getting Thorn. Though it looks cool, it sucks. Reload is slow. Can anyone confirm damage for fully upgraded Handcannons? Handcannons are hated on already. My problem with Thorn is getting it. It is a hard bounty then you get one of the coolest looking weapons in the game that just does not pull its weight. You have the Last Word and Hawkmoon that can be obtained a number of ways and it is better than Thorn. You actually have to earn Thorn by finishing the long bounty. since this Post started I have acquired TDYK, Timur's Lash, and Hawkmoon [finally]. I also have been using Thorn a lot. My feedback is with TL, you can get great unique re-rolls through the IB reforge system. Thorn is funny to use! Shoot at the ships and you'll see what I mean. Overall it is actually very powerful. Great impact. Easy target precision acquisition. By far though, Hawkmoon is the most balanced. Hawkmoon has ridiculous range and accuracy. Edit: Asking for damage of fully upgraded HC Edit 2: Problem with Thorn Edit 3: New HC

  • I've had TLW since the cryptard patch.. Slowly outgrew it. If I get Hawkmoon, I'll give it a whirl. But now I just mainly use raid weapons.

  • Thorn sucks I have it maxed and it just sits in my vault, The Fatebringer is far superior ...

      • I have the Hawkmoon, Thorn, and The Last Word. Hawkmoon was my first ever exotic I got, mainly luck because I just happened to join a raid group and the first chest I got had a Hawkmoon in it, then my second time in the raid I got another one from the Templar. I maxed out the Hawkmoon and paired with my Gunslinger is amazing. Chain of Woe and Gunslinger's trance, plus the range and accuracy on that thing, reload isn't even a problem. Although without the perks of my Gunslinger, it's still amazing, does anywhere upwards of 1400 on a critical with a bullet doing double that damage. Range is definitely the farthest I've seen for handguns, haven't seen Fatebringer, so I don't quite know. All in all, Hawkmoon is definitely my favorite weapon. In the raid I'm one hit killing goblins and fanatics, when the hobogoblins spawn on the steps outside the map and starts sniping, I can take them out in one hit and faster than a sniper rifle, that's how accurate the gun is. The impact is also amazing cause every other shot has the enemies getting stunned. Only thing is one has to aim because you're getting either head shots or criticals, one hit one kill. If you don't, then you'll run out of ammo really fast. For me, I can go through the entire raid without having to run out of ammo, just the criticals and the drops sustain me enough. P.S. sucks against oracles though... As for The Last Word, it's an amazing gun. High fire rate, along with Gunslinger's Trance and Chain of Woe to increase reload speed and stability/accuracy, then gloves that increase hand cannon reload speed, it's epic. The only fault is the fact that the range on it is sub par. Close range, this gun beats the hawkmoon because it shoots much faster, farther range, Hawkmoon does more accuracy. PvP wise, I'd go with The Last Word, PvE definitely the Hawkmoon. In my opinion and experience. As for the Thorn... ummmm.... I reserve the right to post my opinion after they buff the gun cause at the moment, it angers me with the time I spent doing the bounty, much like the Bad Juju Hope this helps :P

      • It's all about what environment you're playing in. If you're in PvE, then Thorn is your choice. If you're in PvP then it depends on the playlist/map. I really haven't gotten used to Thorn yet, so for the time being I stick to skirmish where the playlist heavily favors small-mid sized maps of 3v3. In these maps there is no better primary weapon than TLW, but then again I really love using it and have grown very accustomed to its play style. It's not hard to see someone charging at with you a shotgun, but on these maps that could still spell doom for you. But with TLW you just keep calm, back pedal, and let loose. With the the 2 special perks, and the stability perk, this weapon fires more accurately from the hip than from aiming down the sights (I tested this by aiming at a wall, firing, and watching the spread/recoil). This gets pretty well mitigated when you get the stability perk, and I still prefer to use the sights for mid range kills (easier to target the head, with the outstanding stability the range is pretty well compensated if you know how the gun kicks). Being an Xbox user I'm really excited for the Hawkmoon in the Fall. I've heard great things about it, and from what I hear it sounds like a hybrid (in terms of stats and capabilities) of Thorn and TLW. By that I mean Thorn is best for long-mid range, TLW for short-mid, and Hawkmoon is proficient but perhaps not excellent in either. In Thorn and TLW I feel like you have to truly master the gun to be able to use it outside of its comfort zone. As for the non-exotics I really like The Devil You May Know, Lord High Fixer, and Fatebringer. The first two are extremely similar in stats and production, but I prefer High Fixer due to the radar staying active while aiming down. Fatebringer I think is a bit overrated, it's stats and performance in PvP just isn't as good as the former two. It has excellent impact, but everything else is just average. The former 2 have similar, if not greater impact, while also boasting greater range and stability. This is just from my own opinion of using each of these guns in both PvE and PvP,, obviously everyone is different. I will say this for the Fatebringer- it is the handcannon of choice for the raid and anything with arc burn. It will also help on the next raid with those arc-shielded Knights. The explosions it creates off head shots is superb for crowd control, and capable of killing thralls, dregs, and goblins without any prior damage in most cases. Ultimately, this answer is largely going to depend on the player. Devil and LHF are good handcannons that anyone can just pick up and play with, and among the exotics I feel this is how the Hawkmoon operates as well. However, for Thorn and TLW there is a bit of learning curve but once mastered these can be beasts, and depending on the map, TLW is my go-to primary for any category. Fatebringer has a slight learning curve, but not nearly as steep as the exotics. I hope this helps, I love handcannons because of their great impact and the wide variety of capable weapons in this class.

            • Its not Thorn because Bungie BROKE THE GUN. It honestly was barely okay to use but now they took away the only redeeming thing about it its DoT effect. There's no reason to use this gun compared to Fatebringer, TLW or even Hawkmoon. Thorn should not even be in the game anymore Bungie decides to do damage control by telling us it was "unintentional" hahaha right before A MAJOR PvP EVENT?? You have to be kidding me, I can taste the intent.

                • I would say level it at least till the special perk kicks in. I have gloves that speed reload for HC and find thorn useful in pvp especially in areas where people pop out and hide to recover when they're close to dead.

                      • I only have Hawkmoon and Last Word. I have the bounty for Thorn but I hate PVP and I don't play Destiny much anymore to care. I will say I have Last Word fully upgraded but feel as though Hawkmoon seems to be the better choice. It will be the next weapon I upgrade. Whenever I find inspiration to play Destiny again.

                      • Thorn is difficult to get and is somewhat underpowered. It's getting a buff though Last word is crazy good but also difficult to get because you need a little RNG I know nothing about hawk moon because it's a PSN exclusive

                        • For the Playstation realm is the Hawkmoon hands down. For the Xbox realm there's multiple choices depending on the players preference. I would say the general consensus would be that the overall best three hand cannons are: The Last Word Fatebringer The Devil You Know Under my experience with hand cannons, I believe that The Red Hand IX(with the range perk) is the overall best hand cannon in the game. Besides TLW I believe it has the highest stability, especially combined with Gunslinger's Trance. I also find it to be incredibly easy to land headshots in PvP compared to TDYK, which is due to the Red Hand having having very clear sights. Many people will throw the Thorn in as a heavy contender for the best hand cannon. Players are attracted to it for its Mark Of the Devour, but with its low accuracy, and extremely slow reload, and 6 shot cylinder, the gun just disappoints. The Thorn will heavily reward players who put in the time to master the weapon as the MOTD can be quite lethal once put to good use.

                        • I understand you need skill for Thorn, but for raid purposes, you can't let that slow reload hinder you.
