How did Kabr open the Vault?

The VoG Grimoire card says a Guardian named Kabr opened the Vault himself before perishing inside. But how did he open it himself?

  • Kabr did have a fireteam but the gorgons erased them for time so they didnt exist. When he says "no one was with me, but I wasn't alone" is because the team was deleted from time he has no memory of them but he does remember that someone was there.

  • Kabr was a feeble level 28 who had never attempted the Vault of Glass before that fateful night. He arrived in the Tower on a cold and rainy Tuesday evening - armed with his recently purchased Vanguard weapons - hoping to catch a ride with a Fireteam destined to destroy Atheon. As he arrived he checked the roster, noticed that there were a team of five level 30s in the bar area. He waltzed on over with Bad Seed Down hanging off of his Titan gown, he noticed that they were picking up some last minute refreshments before boarding their respective ships which were being readied for take-off. They spotted him, and in awe of his stature they proceeded to dance - Kabr obviously reciprocated. After some light-hearted Tomfoolery he joins their fireteam, readying for the Raid ahead. "Helllllooooooo, Kabr" one Warlock bellows deep and loud (akin to that of Thorin Oakenshield) who's shrouded in purple, evidently from his maxed out Void weapons. "Hi boys" Kabr replies timidly, not sensing their alpha-male-esque bravado and testosterone filled balls. "U a girl, m8!?" Says a scouse voice from the dark corner in the room. Kabr looks up, sees a cloaked figure who's face is all blacked out, hidden under his hood. It's a Hunter, leaning against a wall polishing his Arc Blade with a whetstone. Kabr deeply swallows and replies "Nahhhhh, lad - sorry to disappoint..." trying to put a slight cockiness to his tone to give off a sense of arrogance. He continues "... You lot doing the VOG?" The purple Warlock steps forward and says "yeah we are and what of it?! You wanna join us on Hard, do you?" Kabr meekly replies "Yes please, only if there's room.. I don't wanna take the place of anyone who's still after loot" "Hahaha. You ever done the Raid, son?" Says the Warlock, the other members looking on, eagerly awaiting Kabr's response. "No... I haven't but errrr, errr... I've watched a few videos online about it so I know all the stages, where I need to stand and everything" Kabr replies to the group as a whole. "Nah m8. U'll only slow us down like as ur a 28, we're only reli doin' an Ascy run n wanna b outta there rapid" Says the Hunter who's now stepped forward to join the others. "Anyway, best b off like. Gotta b outta there by 10 lad" And with that the group board their ships and head off for the VOG. Kabr stands and watches their ships leaving the Tower, a group of 5 destined for a night of camaraderie and totes ladishness. And with that, Kabr jumps in to his ship and yells to his pilot "FOLLOW THAT FIRETEAM". Kabr's common ship is no match for the speed of those legendaries and soon they disappear in to the distance, out of site. He quickly checks his roster and they're still in his roster, albeit already in the VOG. His pilot - a seasoned veteran - knows his way to the Ishtar Sink and so carries on in hope on finally finding Kabr the fireteam he's been longing for. They land, Kabr hops out and waves goodbye to his pilot who looks on in admiration of the young Titan embarking on his first real quest. Kabr takes a minute to familiarise himself with his surroundings, trying to recall those late nights he spends watching videos online. He steps off the plate and sees a beaming light shining straight forward towards the large, metal door. "THEY'RE IN!" He yelps with excitement and with that hops on his sparrow and zooms up to the entrance. He looks behind him and jumping off his sparrow he turns towards his pilot hovering in the distance. He raises his Bad Seed Down down in the air and let's off two quick bursts. Without anything more he swings back around and heads in to the abyss that is the Vault of Glass. The rest is still to be written
Kill me now
• He opened it with his team but they were erased from existence by the Gorgons, and so in the end, he opened it alone. It's basically a paradox in time

    • He did it with his fireteam but he was alone. He wasn't alone physically but he merely separated himself from connecting with his team.

EDIT: This has been reposted here (with edits) by request http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/78532776 Having read only a little of peoples thoughts on the topic and having not been in the vault myself I would put forward the following consideration. Kabr was by himself but not alone. Arriving at the vault Kabr felt a presence, a resonance. What he felt was Kabr. Long story short. The Vault is essentially a time machine constructed by Aetheon or a time manipulating weapon. Kabr goes to bust the place up. Kabr gets marked by the Oracles etc but the mark of negation is actually Vex nano particles. Vex dust of the Oracles. These particles invade the host. Turns out Kabr is genetically compatible (the Oracles decide he is real) and the Templar does not negate him. Instead he is allowed to proceed. No relic or any of that so he can wander up and say howdy to Aetheon because really he is no threat. Gets to Aetheon, maybe even has a little chat, a little sit down. But throughout he can feel the Vex eating into him, into his blood and brain. Kabr figures out Aetheons plan and needs to stop it so he goes back kills a gorgon makes the relic sacrifices his light and makes a hole in the vault, end result. A guardians light is akin to a soul but it is attuned to the traveler in the case of light wielders. Kabr gave up his soul in the vault in order to lock Aetheon in a permanent time loop after and before the start of the universe. Aetheon is living in Groundhog day and Kabr's soul is trapped there with him. Paradox warning: Kabr's soul has been trapped in the Vault since before time so when Kabr showed up at the vault Kabr let him in. Kabr's body escaped through the hole he made, he left behind the relic to protect guardians from becoming like him. Kabr meets Pahanin, and tells him some stuff as he dies but he is dying because he cannot regenerate without his light and as his body dies he is becoming a Vex Human hybrid consumed by the nano machines of the mark of negation. Then Kabr says I f "I speak again, I am not Kabr" Pahanin thinks this is crazy but whatever. Tries to drag Kabr to the tower, Kabr is hurt but seems pretty fine, Kabr won't go and doesn't want Pahanin to tell anyone that hes alive. It takes a while but eventually Pahanin starts to realize that ain't Kabr anymore and it hasn't been since his final words. Pahanin starts gettin real paranoid like especially since he knows that Kabr has taken a new identity and he is the only one who knows who Kabr really is. So Pahanin starts carrying around a heavy machine gun wherever he goes cuz he is worried that Kabr will come for him. Meanwhile Dredgen Yor hears a whisper that becomes a voice and it directs him to kill Pahanin, so he does it, as any guardian would do if faced with a voice telling you to kill without explanation. Is the Voice Dredgen Yor hears a person? Is Kabr a living Vex Hybrid? Is he the Voice? If he is the voice and if he speaks again he is not Kabr then who is Kabr? Well, who is the one who speaks. In any sentence or any context, the one who speaks is always the speaker. Kabr is the Speaker, this knowledge drove Pahanin crazy, it got him killed as the only person who knew the truth. Because Kabr's light is trapped in the Vault the Speaker is constantly dying that is why 1) mask completely enshrouds the face 2) he collects motes of light in exchange for stuff from his closet. He cannot regenerate light, he is a ghoul and must feed off light from others. Unlike other strikes and stuff that you can repeat and we all just suspend our disbelief the Vault is actually outside of time so everytime you play it it is the only time it will be played and the crack made by Kabr allows time to leak in sufficient to run the vault. Running the Vault gives Kabr's light a break from it's eternal struggle with Aetheon. When Kabr's light (The Relic is taken up) I am calling this Kabr's Respite. So the Relic is a Vex Body with Kabr's light and The Speaker is Kabrs Body with Vex nano machines. The only way to kill the speaker will be to retrieve the relic and use it to destroy him. So not only is Kabr keeping Aetheon at bay but Aetheon is keeping Kabr from escaping to protect the Vex Mole the Speaker. He is also the leader ostensibly of the tower like king Polydectes a guardian must bring him the Aegis so that when he looks upon it he will turn to stone. In short I am left to wonder what the hell is really going on.

What is the vault? A time portal. What happens in there? People can get wiped from existance. So here is what happened: Kabr had a full team, 6 guardians went in. BUT: All but him were erased from time at the Templar. Therefore, they had NEVER EXISTED. This is Kabr's paradox: He knows he went in with 5 other Guardians, because he was there. BUT, since they got wiped from existance, he never could have known or even met them, therefore they could not have been with him when opening the vault. This is why Kabr says he opened the vault 'By himself, but not alone'. Because he did it with a fireteam that never existed.

Some high-level blueberries were on their way to the Black Garden and saw Kabr (who I assume must have been Light 50-60) hanging out fighting Vex outside the vault and decided to pitch in. He held the left sync plate and two guys took right while one 31 held the middle with the help of the sides. When he says he was alone, he just means no one would join his fireteam after he spammed them with invites and messages while in the tower.
Kabr didn't have a mic.
• If you read in the grimoire the only people you hear about entering the vault are pahanin and Kabr. Now, another grimoire, particularly the one about the relic tells you that the Templat and the Oracles have the ability to erase people from the past, present and future. So Kabr's fireteam except for Kabr and Pahanin (not sure if thats his name but its close) are the only ones who weren't wiped from history. Now another grimoire tells us the reason this happened, as in why didn't Kabr and Pahanin get "negated" is because Pahanin escaped the vault, and Kabr's ghost sacrificed itself to save Kabr. Using the rest of his light he made the relic to protect other guardians, essentially sacrificing himself. Kabr and Pahanin remember that other people were with them, but there is no face or name associated with those guardians since they were wiped from history. Hope this cleared things up.

                  • He had a full fireteam built up of some of the most skilled guardians such as peradyth and phanin. His entire fireteam was slowly picked apart, phanin escaped alive to spread the word about the events in the vault. Kabr near his final moments killed a gorgon and crafted the relic out of it in hopes that guardians that come after him shall be able to defeat Atheon.
