My final server rant...

I have been a very vocal dissenter when it comes to this game's broken servers. A lot of my threads have been logical, damning critiques of Bungie's practically non-existent, insulting help articles regarding the various error codes thousands of us receive on a daily basis. And some of it has just been angry, snide remarks about the unplayable condition of the servers themselves. I was vocal for a couple different reasons, but mostly, I believed (with a fair amount of naive idiocy) that my comments mattered. Surely if I illustrated my ills in a mature, well-thought out manner, myself and countless other disenfranchised gamers would see some improvements and actually get to play the game for more than ten minutes at a time. I even got a response or two from Bungie as a result of my threads, which temporarily made me feel like I mattered. There have been multiple patches with server improvements, and yet, every day the help forums are saturated with thousands of new comments from people who cannot play the game. You knew enough about the state of the servers before launch that you were able to give every possible code a very specific name. So how is it possible that you continue to be so clueless about what the codes actually mean? You have actually taken to the forums to ask the community what sorts of fixes worked for them. It doesn't get much more embarrassing than that. I've come to realize it doesn't matter that you won't actually come out and admit your servers are primarily to blame. Why would you? Being honest about one's own incompetence is unheard of among corporations, and usually spells out termination or serious punishment to the parties responsible for the honesty. It's way easier to trot out a bunch of "help" articles that all implicate our network settings. Your recommended "fixes" are not difficult to implement, and yet they've offered no improvements to my experience (nor the experience of thousands of others who have followed your network recommendations). I feel compelled to mention again -- I have no issue with any other online game/app. It is limited to Destiny alone. And even after being forced to learn about static versus dynamic ip, port forwarding, NAT type, etc, my experience remains the same. Your fixes are smokescreens, distractions from broken servers that you knew were broken from the get-go, as evidenced by all the specific names you had already assigned for every error code imaginable. It's taken me two months, but I finally understand that the servers are not going to change, and that my experience will remain frustrating. I will continue to play the game in three to thirty-minute intervals, and then get kicked out for reasons that are entirely on your end. Whether you are unwilling or incapable of fixing your servers, you've obviously determined that the players who are unable to play are enough of a minority that they can be relatively disregarded (not counting, of course, cute PR moves like a forum response here or there, or a paragraph in a weekly update). That's understandable from a business standpoint. But it's a huge bummer for me. As I stated in the subject line, this will be my last extensive server rant. I finally get that I don't matter, and neither do the others who experience similar issues. Carry on without us. I imagine you'll hardly notice.

  • I really appreciate your post, and am personally sorry that you have had a bad experience. For some users, like yourself, troubleshooting and messing with your network settings will not solve the problems you are encountering. For others, performing the steps we recommend actually do solve connection issues. We are humbled that people like you actually learn to troubleshoot and set up your network to play our game, and I'm saddened that doing so didn't solve the issues you are hitting. We are still hard at work trying to improve the player experience for players such as yourself, but my saying that doesn't solve your problem. Again, I apologize. We'll continue to try to address the issues that player's can't solve on their end.

    • It's not their servers. If you're on PSN - It's entirely a NAT problem. If you're on XBL - It's most likely an ISP issue. I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, it's just how it is. I do not work for Bungie. I am not affiliated with Bungie or Activision -- I simply feel that I can help you 1 on 1 so, if you'd like some help from an administrator, feel free to msg me and I can work on troubleshooting with you directly.

I have the exact same issue and I'm not sure I can explain in words how frustrating it is when I cannot do anything to fix such a constant, persistent issue. I just got kicked two times and got kicked out of Live to boot. This game had half a billion dollars poured into it and with that said, the servers don't work for everyone? I'm glad I'm not the only one who has the issue and I sincerely hope Bungie fixes this.

        • Remember the good ole days when games stood on their own without the need for constant connection to the Internet? When software companies actually finished the games before releasing them? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

          • Well, I have to say this was a refreshing thread. Not because I agree necessarily, at least not for the same reason. This thread was so well written; clean, calm, and mature. I hate when people rant so angrily about developers (and I have to admit, I've been that person before so I totally get it, but I have seen the error of my ways). When someone who spews hatred to a developer and then get angry because they feel like the developer doesn't care about them I just laugh, because with that kind of treatment, I don't blame them. As you can see, Bungie somewhat agrees, they found your thread refreshing as opposed to all the immature rage heads out there, and while they didn't really solve your problem I think it speaks volumes about you as a person for having at least even a modicum of understanding in light of your awful gaming experience. Kudos Gimme Your Hair. I agree with you in the fact that I'm starting to long for a different game to play, though I can't say it's because of networking problems for me. The only time I've really had any serious issues with being booted constantly was when this latest patch came out, but then again, so did everyone else. I am, however, starting to really find it hard to enjoy Destiny because it feels incredibly small of a game. I've been grinding for nearly a month now playing Strike after Strike, Daily after Daily, and all of the other grinders, just to get the same gear over and over and creep ever so slowly just to level 26 yesterday. It's really starting to get incredibly boring, and to make it worse, it just occurred to me a few days ago after killing the Nexus Mind for probably the hundredth time; what happens when I finally reach level 30? To me Destiny is losing it's awe inspiring "new puppy" factor fast. So now what? I get to level 30, wait until December for an expansion in which I will be jipped (I'm on XB1 so I'll be paying the same amount of money for significantly less than my PS4 counterparts) just to grind another month doing a few more new things just to get 2 more levels, countless more useless items, and a feeling of life lost never to be recovered? The more I think about it...Destiny is just boring. I can't help but chuckle at the looming irony that is Halo: The Master Chief Collection. I mean there has to be others feeling what I feel. Bungie's iconic series is coming back, and people REALLY miss the those first three Halos. And with the feeling of fun and accomplishment fading from Destiny, I think Bungie's brainchild is going to come back to haunt them and eclipse their new flagship brainchild. I know a lot of people my age grew up in the new era video game dynasty and, consequently, grew up on Halo. So the exciting prospect of getting to re-live all of those memories with next gen technology is just incredibly exciting to me, and I think probably scary for Bungie. Am I wrong? Who agrees? Sorry, theres my rant inside of your rant.

            • Seriously.... If typical game console fans have to resort to learning about networks, static versus dynamic ip and so on, because Bungie can't comprehend the issue of their servers being so bad then Bungie needs to amass a total recall of this game because alot of typical gamers are very disappointed with Destinys final outcome. It's already bad enough that Activition forces Bungie to cut stuff out of the game to create more DLC's in the future so they can make more money. How greedy can people get?!? If this game is the future of Bungie then I believe this game is the sad ending of Bungies grand gamemaking adventure. It makes absolutely no sense that Bungie can control the servers 5 million players on the Beta but they can't control the servers with an average of 15 thousand players on the full game. They had nearly 2 months before the full game release to fix all of these issues that gamers were having and all they have done sense the full game release is made it worse. At least on the Beta Bungie took their heads out of their butts to help the system and fix error code problems people were having. Now that the full game is out there are more error codes than there was in the Beta. Typical Xbox and Playstation users should not have to learn about how to control the flow of their own internet connection on a computer just to play a game.

              • I've been having the same issues since the last patch. Most frequently, it's just a straight D/C from Xbox Live with no error code. The fact that they haven't even acknowledged this issue formally outside of a couple of posts saying "sorry tough luck", or shown that they are actively working on the problem is disheartening to say the least. A pity, as I really was enjoying the game, and was looking forward to continuing to enjoy the upcoming DLC with my friends, but at this point I can't justify spending any more money on a game that I can't even play.

              • I've had it. I had no problems whatsoever until they release the last update now I get kicked every 5 seconds. Do you not even test your own patches? It seems to me that every step you've taken with this game is dictated by some snot nosed kid. It's all knee-jerk reactions instead of focusing on real problems. I could care less that some kid that needs to play outside more thinks my weapon is OP. I'm more concerned with the fact I'm an over 40 paying customer begging for you to fix problems with networking and connectivity 2 months after release. I bought a season pass. Guess what? Can't get that money back. Given the stellar history of Activision this really comes as no surprise. Lousy customer service, even worse public relations, and an attitude towards your customers that indicates you really don't care at all. To you people bottom line is all that matters and I can understand that, I too am a business owner. But you better believe that if my customers have a problem I fix it instead of standing there waiting for my bonus check. Don't bother with any automated message. I'm probably older than anyone in your studios and know better.

                • Funny you can dislike others posts but not bungies. I feel for you on the server issues as most are having same problem. Not knowing what Bungie has on their end it's hard to say what is happening with confidence other then seems to be the only game on play station and other consoles that is a total cluster when it comes to online. It really feels like at best bungie will get working servers.Nothing else done for frustrated users.

                  • I have similar problems. I wish Bungie could explain why their servers are so bad... I also get kicked on 3-30 minute intervals which usually worsens based on the activity. I have particular problems with control and patrols on Venus and Mars

                  • Great post OP! This describes my experiences perfectly. 2 months of getting BEE errors in 6v6 and no sign of a solution from Bungie. Last update on the BEE help page was 2 weeks ago. Really feeling that my gaming experience is not important to Bungie. Love the game, would really love to be able to play all of it. Will boycott the DLC until they fix their server issues.

Al the "solutions" i read here in the forums require for me to access the router to change the NAT Type... but i can't! My internet is supplied by the apartment building. The other option is to mess with the ip settings... Damn i shouldn't be a computer genius to play my game! I bought it, i should be able to put the game in the console and play without any problems!

                      • Gimme Your Hair, Over the past few weeks I have generally found myself agreeing with most of gamers statement about the state of the gameplaying experience - including most of your post above. Most of the above I agree with in the main. However, I would say that my connection stability did improve significantly after last Wednesday's update (or undo as the case may have been). I do genuinely feel for everyone who is affected as my concern is now that the connection may drop at any time - "Once bitten... and all that".. Fortunately, I can't manage the Nightfall on my own and so when it dropped three times (the few times it has dropped over the past week) I didn't lose everything as I could respawn at my friend's position.... You point out that Bungie knew the servers were broken due to the variety of error codes. I have to defend Bungie here. I used to work in electronics testing and found there were often bewildering arrays of error codes/numbers/names etc that appeared to have either no rhyme or reason, or seemed just plain daft. There's no accounting it seems for engineers' minds. I didn't understand what the errors meant, being just a monkey on the shopfloor, but the engineers seemed to know. If Bungie has created a seemingly bewildering array of error codes, it's not necessarily because they know they will happen, only that they MAY happen, and more importantly, what component of the system may have caused it. Again, I feel everyone's pain insofar it's downright annoying when it happens and I still want to throw my controller at the screen, but I understand why the errors appear. By the way, if they had more technical errors (like Microsoft's 0x000xxxxx errors), it makes it easier for people to mix them up, and is shown to be more frustrating for people. What Bungie could do is tell us what the errors may relate to (without detailing proprietary information)....? It may help us diagnose the potential problems at our end if necessary. In a similar vein, the servers may or may not be capable of handling the load. I expect Bungie employs load-balancing on their servers (or at least something similar) and it may be that one or more of the servers are more picky about how well they run (spoiling then fun for everyone). There may be no obvious reason as to why either. I have seen this happen in the company I work for now and it is very frustrating. I doubt the servers were not up to the job, unless the company seriously underestimated just how popular the game would be. What I do completely agree with is the lack of information Bungie have given us. The post you received from Bungie is the most comprehensive answer I've seen, which is a little worrying for a company which prides itself on being part of the gaming community. I don't expect to see any proprietary data at all. But I do expect Bungie to be more open with their details and help. There is a plethora of cures on the forum from people which, while I appreciate worked for them, makes it very hard for the "Joe Bloggs" gamer to work their way through and figure out what may help them. I do not expect people to start playing around with Static or Dynamic (DHCP) IP addressing, and in fact this could cause problems with their home network if they don't understand the potential ramifications. Bungie should either collate the helpful advice, test it and advise us accordingly, or remove it so people aren't being fed potentially useless or problematic instructions. They should be sending out a message to people stating, "This is what you can try.... and let us know if it doesn't help." or if they know the issue is at their end, "Please don't play with your system settings, we know there's an issue, it's at our end and this is what we're doing." Just my twopennithworth.

I "fixed" it and got just the same Errors. And I cannot play PvE at all. I get kicked 100% of the times I try. Only able to play Crucible and it's extremely frustrating. Sometimes I wish I didn't buy the game if I was just going to stress connection issues. Even though I have a 2 month old router and great connection on every other video game I play..
