Plasma Screen HUD Burn-In

Destiny is console exclusive, which means almost all players play on a television, not a monitor. Many of these players play on plasma screens, millions in fact. The average play session of Destiny is logged by Bungie at 4 hours. I fall around that mark, and that's about all I've used my TV for lately, as I'm sure is the same for many players. This leads to a huge problem, one that may have already permanently damaged my near $3K TV, the HUD is burnt into my display. I'm a very proud owner of the "65in Panasonic VT60, and I paid a very pretty penny for it. Millions of others also playDestiny on plasmas, and the fact is no matter how "worn in" a plasma is, it is still prone to burn-in or image retention. Either can occur after a static image is left on the screen for an extended period of time, like say, playing Destiny for a few hours a day, with no other content appearing on the TV in between. From my recent average playtime, I now have a retained image of the bottom left HUD area burnt in my display; super bar, all 3 weapon slots, among blur where ammo is counted and so on. I left my TV wiping for 12 hours, and the image is still there. (Update 11/19) My TV has been wiping for almost 24 hours, and still has the HUD clearly burned in. (Update 11/20) My TV has been wiping for almost 48 hours straight. The HUD is still there, but instead of a dark gray shadow, it seems to be a tinge of pink. This is a bad sign) There is a simple solution for preventing this, and still being able to enjoy long play sessions. Battlefield 4 got this perfect right off the bat, they added the option to adjust HUD opacity in the video options. This completely stomped the possibility for image retention, and even after hundreds of hours of gameplay I never had a problem. For those who don't know, this option would make it possible to have your HUD slightly see-through so the pixels are being stimulated. This is a very big deal, and has the potential to ruin many plasmas, only from playing Destiny for an average play session, even with days in between. BUNGIE PLEASE, add a simple HUD opacity slider and put all your plasma owners at ease. Love, every Destiny player with a plasma. Please comment to get this noticed.

Right I will actually help you out here as opposed to talking shit like 90% of the idiots here do. Go to settings and turn off any game mode you may have. Turn brightness and contrast to max - it's only a short term thing so would suggest doing it on a different picture mode. If your Plasma has screen brightness or panel brightness (can't remember the exact phrase), set this to max also. Turn off screen pixel movement for this bit only! Make sure to turn it back on after :). Now run the screen wipe program - 30 minutes first. Turn it off and allow it to cool. An hour second time and again, turn it off to allow it to cool. Finally 4 hours of it and that "should" fix it or reduce it to a low enough visibility. This has a 95% chance of success for people I have done this for (previous Samsung engineer - now work for FPS game manufacturer). So once this has hopefully worked, turn on game mode immediately for that HDMI channel! Turn on moving pixels / screen burn protection and set to max! Reduce panel brightness to 50% max and then change brightness and contrast to correct levels. Quick hint for a better picture, set "sharpness" to zero. HiDef sources are ruined by sharpness settings lol. Hope this works. Let me know chap :)

Its an outdated plasma screen that you had to have shortly after they were released, therefore paying too damn much and getting the now obsolete tv style. I used to sell T.V.s right after plasmas were released, a few simple facts: All plasma tvs have the capacity for burn in, hell we had a few demo units that had a dvd menu burned in. 95% of plasma screens have a close viewing angle like 120 degress and have poor in light performance. Plasma screens with typical usage need a "recharge" roughly every 5 years, basically an oil change for the plasma, used to cost 1000$ not sure about now. But otherwise you were subject to picture fade and slow response time. Major T.V. manufacturers moved to L.C.D. then L.C.D. as they proved more versitile in high and low light, cheaper to produce and sell, therfore easier to move, and be longer lasting without maintainence. In fact many times the motherboard fails before the screen. TL; DR: Plasmas suck and are outdated, read above for why.

    • Not bungies fault because of your stone age purchase. Seriously sell it for as much as you can and definetly upgrade to an LED

        • The first problem was buying plasma. Not being a dick, really plasmas are really bad options. Limited lifetime, and the possibility of this, something that went away with projection tv's.

Wholeheartedly agreed! I have the same TV and the exact same issue. There is an obvious HUD in the bottom-left corner of my tv now; which, despite my best-efforts to screen-wipe, persists. It's gotten less noticeable after several hours of wiping, but still clearly there whenever it's against a light background. More gameplay will just potentially make it worse over time. An opacity option here would go a long way as sessions in Destiny tend to last for a few hours. Great game, needs HUD opacity option. Please.

        • Yeah, the scroll or scan screen is there for a reason. If you know anything about plasma screens, you would have know to do the scroll atleast twice a week to keep burns from happening. I do it once a day for 5 minutes. Your neglect is what ruined your tv, not destiny. Your ignorance amuses me.

          • The VT60 is a sick TV. My favourite one out there. But this is a problem with the technology not Bungie. That is why even Panasonic has abandoned this technology. It makes no sense for Bungie to dedicate ANY dev time on a technology that no company supports anymore. With that being said, for the last 3-4 years I've had Panasonic reps SWEAR to be that their tvs can't get burn in anymore (just "image retention"). So you should reach out to them.

            • Trust me when I say, this will fade away in time. I've played a lot of RPG's in my life, on plasma televisions. Hundreds upon hundreds of hours, and I always had this "shadow" afterward. Whenever I start playing a different game, with a different hud, this eventually washes the screen back out. But it does take a while.

                  • Honestly I'm surprised any good quality sets still have this issue. My Sony and Samsungs have options for auto pixel adjustment that moves pixels around on an undetectable level to keep burn in from occurring. I think the opacity slider from battlefield is probably meant more to see the actual action and not so much meant for burn in prevention, but probably ended up being a positive side effect they discovered. I've never heard of a game addressing this, as it's a hardware issue.

Very simple "fix", switch your tv to a channel with "snow" for a few mins every day. Ive had my plasma for 5-6 years now do this every day or so and have never had a "burn in" isuue

                      • This is a good idea. My first 50inch was a plasma but I babied it for a year or so to make sure that image retention doesn't happen. I don't have to use the wipe function as much anymore.

                      • This is exactly why I purchased an LED television. No complaints. Sorry bout your burn-in though, that's no fun. Most games these days have some sort of constant animation to prevent this sort of thing.

                      • Hey brother. Well written post, Nice TV selection. Plasma is clearly better image quality. Which is why I bought one. I HAVE GOT GOOD news for you. If bungie would act now. We could reverse and prevent future plasma burn in. Burn in is caused by uneven aging of pixels. After the pixels are aged they don't shine as bright. THE SOLUTION!!! 1. Add option for us to invert all hud picture color. INCLUDING HEALTH BAR. This will reverse our burn in BY ALLOWING THE BURNT IN PIXELS TO REST, WHILE THE REST OF THE TV PIXELS CATCH UP! 2. ADD A sliding opacity option to prevent future burn in. ALL PROBLEMS SOLVED. LIKE THIS PLEASE SO BUNGIE WILL SEE IT
