Choose a faction, bounties, Strikes, vanguard and crucible rep go towards that faction. You can level that twice as fast as anything else. Also strikes have high chances of giving rare and legendary engrams!

How do you choose a faction? I've seen that a few times now.

There are 3. Dead orbit located in the hanger, Future War cult, located above dead orbit, And New Monarchy, located by the speaker. You just buy their class item and equip it.
