If a game advertises itself as having a "rich, cinematic story" then i expect one at launch. You can't justify a 10 hour long story from a game with a 500 million dollar budget and 5 years of development. This story is downright amateurish and painful. Throughout the campaign, you dont know what you are doing or really care about anything. I find it hard to believe that after being dead for 1,000 years, your character has no questions whatsoever about what's going on. They have no reaction to being dead for 1,000 years, they're like"yea, this is cool". Being an awoken at the start just breaks the lore, since according to the grimore the awoken came about from people who tried to escape the collapse on ships and got to the asteroid belt before god knows what happened. So awoken being on earth makes no sense. The missions are all copy/pasted from the last one you did. You don't even get told or see what you recovered. In the cutscene where you meet the exo stranger, you're asked
Have you heard of the black garden?
To which your ghost replies:
We've heard the rumors.
What rumors? I didn't know there was a black garden. Am i suppose to know this stuff before i start playing? One mission that made me say "what?" Was the dust palace mission. Where your ghost says
Golden age relics, research on the traveler,This place could be a gold mine
Wait so you're telling me the ghosts, the very things created by the traveler itself , they don't even know its origins and history? What the -blam!-. Wait,if the traveler can revive people ,how does it even lose fights? I don't even know what the darkness is. Why is it after the traveler? It raises more questions than answers: What is the darkness? Why does it want to destroy the traveler? What is the origin of the vex, cabal, fallen, and hive? Why does the darkness need 4 different armies? Why did these factions side with the darkness? If these factions are all part of the darkness, why are they always killing each other? ^^The main story should give you some form of answer to these questions. I should not have to pay to get an answer.

One grimoire about Rasputin first detecting the darkness mentions him detecting gravity waves in blue shift, which basically means he detected a giant object moving into our system. A dark sphere, like the traveler.

 •
I don't even know what the darkness is. Why is it after the traveler? It raises more questions than answers: What is the darkness?
The Darkness is the physical manifestation of the Darker side of the Universe. Where Light is all the positive energies of the universe, The Dark is the negative manifestation. Anger, Hatred, Destruction, Malevolence, Greed, Fear, ect.
Why does it want to destroy the traveler?
This is another story of the eternal struggle. Positive against negative. Light verses Dark. Right verse Wrong. It is a conflict that is as old as fiction itself. Destruction will always seek to destroy Creation. That is the very nature of the conflict.
What is the origin of the vex, cabal, fallen, and hive?
Clearly each one came from beyond our Solar System and expanded outward. This is like asking "What is the origin of the Human?"
Why does the darkness need 4 different armies?
Power. The more under it's control. The more destruction it can cause without fear of repercussion. It destroyed a Human Space Empire that reached beyond Sol System and spread through the Galaxy. Contrary to popular believe. Quantity counts for something. It could not do the amount of destruction it causes alone.
Why did these factions side with the darkness?
The Vex Worship it. That was pretty obvious from the Black Garden Mission. The Sol Progeny bowing in worship to a growing miasma of the Darkness. Submitting to it's will. The Hive also worship it as a leader of sort. The Shrines of Oryx communicating with something from beyond the system. Ghost talks about after you destroy the Shrine of Oryx. Perhaps Oryx is the name for the Darkness that the Hive have given it. (Not to be confused with Crota who is of the Hive species.) The Cabal are a race of conquerors and destroyers. The Darkness can obviously communicate with the Hive and Vex, why not the Cabal? Making promises of fresh conquests, new territory to destroy, wars to fight. To give their armada purpose. The Fallen are a race of Scavengers and Pirates. They follow in the wake of the others and take advantage of the destruction to feed in order to survive. They haven't moved on because here is where the wake of the Darkness stops. This was made clear throughout the entire Earth chapters where they pick apart the Cosmodrone looking for stuff to pick apart.
If these factions are all part of the darkness, why are they always killing each other?
Their overarching commander, leader, and prophet, is gone. They were designed to wage war and have different philosophies and agendas with only the Darkness uniting them. With the Darkness gone, they are free to pursue their own agenda which tends to come into conflict with each other. Since they solve their problems by killing the problems dead, most obvious course of action. You're so busy rushing you don't stop to think about what you've seen. When you actually stop to take in each fight and examine what you've seen and what Ghost is saying. Logic starts to take effect and the picture starts to come together. Everything in moderation. That includes speed. When you're in a rush, you get to where you're going faster but you miss everything along the way because you tunnel on the goal. You can't see anything but the end.

 • Agree except for the 10 hour story lol. More like 3 hour campaign. That includes grinding to increase your level just to complete the story.

 • There are 30 minutes of cutscenes in the game so it can claim that it is cinematic. How rich they are is an opinion. $500 million budget is for the full 10 years not just what we have so far. I have to disagree throughout the campaign you are told what you are doing. Whether or not you care about those reasons are up to you. Your guardian does have questions that he asks the speaker, the queen, the stranger, etc. DinkleBot even asks a bunch of questions. As for the Awoken and why they are on Earth. The collapse happened centuries ago according to what is told in the game, it's feasible that within the last 200 or so years some of the Awoken ventured back to Earth. As for how DinkleBot knows about the Black Garden. I don't know, he doesn't seem to know about the Vex until he arrives at Venus and all the times he is scanning stuff on Venus he doesn't mention the Black Garden. This is not something the guardian knows about but I guess DinkleBot could have heard rumors about the place and not the Vex from somewhere else. Seems unlikely though. The ghosts were created as a dying act of the Traveler right before the collapse. They don't really seem to know a lot about the Traveler actually. They seem to only be set to find a guardian and have the ability to learn. The ghosts can revive people. Now this is conjecture but it would seem that a ghost bonds with a guardian. Guardians always have their ghost and their ghost always revives them if they die. It might not be possible for ghosts to revive multiple guardians. Otherwise DinkleBot would have revived the guardian on the Moon. I believe they mention the guardian being drained of its light. Without a person having light inside them still they might not be revivable. This would also correlate to DinkleBot having to actually search for someone who he could revive instead the first body he finds. The Darkness are a glam rock group of the 2000's. I kid, I kid. It could be as simple as an Alliance of Evil. Or more likely it is a tool that the enemies utilize similar how the guardians utilize the light to get their space magic powers. At least the Hive and the Vex seem to be allied with the Darkness and they do seem to have space magic powers. As for the Fallen and Cabal, they both fight the Hive/Vex. Although Cabal are not seen fighting the actual Hive enemies. We don't know the Darknesses motives yet other than it seems to want to destroy the light of the universe. I assume once the Traveler wakes up we will be able to find out more about it. We learn some about the motives of the different enemy races but not the origins. In Halo CE we didn't find out any of the alien origins until the books and sequels. While it would be nice to know I don't think it's a necessity in the first part. As I stated above I don't think the Darkness has 4 different armies. They fight each other all the time. I really only see a direct connection between the Darkness and the Hive/Vex. Again pointing to Halo CE the flood and the Covenant fought each other but we weren't told why. It was assumed the flood just wanted to kill everything. There are a lot of unanswered questions in Destiny. I definitely don't think every single question needs to be answered within the first couple month's of the games release. Things will be revealed in time. This is not a new practice. As I described with Halo we didn't learn things until sequels and books and we had to pay for those. I read the Wheel of Time and I had to pay for and read all 14 books to find out everything about the story. Even after I finished there were still some unanswered questions.

 • I didn't say it was. I only said that 30 mins of cutscenes would qualify it for being cinematic. I said how rich it was is an opinion. I never gave my opinion on how rich I thought it was.

 • Thats because it isnt rich, its actually terrible for a AAA title to try and get away with this amount of poor story, when your story is worse than a cod story your in trouble. Take witcher 3 and dragon age inq they make this look like a bad joke and the kicker is they had less time and money to make them

 • That is your opinion. My original post is not about discussing whether the story is good or bad. Only about what is there in the story based on the dialog and cutscenes. If you would like to continue debating whether the story was good or not, I'm sure there are a lot of other forum posts out there where you can do so. Good day to you sir.
