He's a missionary, spreading the gospel. But he's Hive, and his god is Oryx, so he tries to murder you.
Or he is trying to marry you to Oryx...
Possible spoilers:
In the original (seemingly discarded) story of Destiny, the Vex gatelord's eye from Venus actually contained a way to access the Earth AI and expose the Traveler as a false god that actually brought The Darkness upon humanity, rather than rescuing humanity from it. This occurred in the Seraphim Vault, accessible via Bunker RAS2.
My theories based on this, but I could be WAY off base:
When playing the Shrine of Oryx, notice how the shrine is sphere, much like the traveler. In the original story, that mission occurred towards the end of the game and it was a ritual the Hive were performing to awaken The Traveler, so it could unleash havoc once again. If the Hive worship Oryx and have a shrine to awaken the Traveler, but named "The Shrine of Oryx," is it too much of a leap to conclude that Oryx and The Traveler are two names for the same god? If the Hive serve The Traveler, then the grimoire story of a Hive Wizard telepathically telling a Guardian Warlock that "we are the same" makes more sense. Along that line, it's interesting to note the parallel between Guardian Titans/Hunters/Warlocks and Hive Knights/Acolytes/Wizards, all undead reanimants of spherical deities. Also notice how Vex architecture is filled with Traveler-like symbols and how the Black Garden looks like the inside of The Traveler http://imgur.com/a/0dELh from early sketches when it was imagined as a traveling worldship. Anyway, that might explain why a Hive Celebrant of Oryx is in a bunker where an AI links to The Traveler.
.

 • I assume that was Oryx's idea. Vacation wedding. Like Disneyland.
