Why don't class items do anything?

One of the many complaints about destiny is the fact the all the classes play very much the same. I didn’t realize this until I started my second character. After reaching lvl 28 with a hunter, and I thought it would be worth while to build a titian character. While playing my titan, it felt more like just changing my subclass. In my mind I thought that titian would be your tank soaking up massive damage, hunters would be the character you choose to do high single target dps, and warlock would handle crowd control for the party. In the end, except for the few moments when you use your super charge, all classes play basically the same. The sad thing is that you can see the shadows of the roles in each class, with the titian’s bubble shield, the hunter’s golden gun, and the warlock’s void blast. The other thing that confuses me is class items. They do nothing for you expect look cool on your character. The point I am trying to make is why didn’t the developers use your class items to help differentiate the class. The developers could have made it so hunter’s cloaks increased damage for a specific gun, or deal additional damage to a race; warlocks armbands would charge abilities like grenades and super charge faster; and the titian’s class item would decrease damage from certain elements, races, or type of damage. That way each class would have more of a specific role in the group. These class items would probably only active durn PVE events, or have certain class items for PVP and PVE. In doing this, collecting class it would change from “How does this look with my armor?” to “what event are we are doing so I can prep?” Destiny is not call of duty or halo. The game has given us enemies that have shield that are more heavily damaged by specific elements, enemies that deal elemental damage, and different class to tackle these challenges. Destiny shouldn’t water them down to basically the same thing. I have played a lot of MMOs and having a role is always more fun then just running around dealing damage where you can. This is just one idea to make the class feel like their own beasts, while It might not be the only way to do so I just want to see bungie do something to show us that they are listening to us, and make this game the great game it could be.

I just wish it would stop giving me the same cloak every time I decode a rare class item engram. I do agree with you. There needs to be some sort of a perk for them.

    • Yeah class items are seriously lacking and I don't get why the ones from he speaker are so expensive. They cost more than an exotic engram which is more useful even if not for your class since you can break it down for shards

Unless the effects are randomized, I wouldn't want this. With no stats or perks attached to the vanity items (cloaks, marks, and bonds), people have only to choose the one they think looks coolest without fear of suffering a stat loss for their tastes. Perhaps if the perks were randomized this could still function, but frankly I'd rather see non-combat related stuff attached to them: increased Glimmer or resource yield, slightly higher chance of finding engrams, etc. Until transmogrification hit in WoW, I was always annoyed at how everyone ended up looking the same at some point. It's tough to be a hero when you look like you're just wearing a mass produced uniform. Sadly, Destiny is far, far away from a point where the developers can work on things like transmog. Maybe once they've released the rest of the game... EDIT: Sorry, didn't finish my thoughts! As for classes being different, if your play style doesn't adjust to your new attributes, then yes, it will feel the same. The game makes titans different from hunters with the perks, but the player has to play to the strengths of those perks to make them seem different. I have a level 27+ of each class, and if I try to play my warlock or hunter like my assault titan, I get myself in trouble; conversely, I can't hang back and give precision fire with my titan or warlock like I can with my hunter. My warlock's ability to unleash destruction over a large area isn't comparably present in my titan and hunter. Sure, some of this comes down to the primary weapon you've picked (scout rifle = hunter, auto rifle = titan, pulse rifle = warlock), but that Golden Gun is a lot easier to aim if you aren't in the thick of it like a titan.

      • Well they said right from the get-go that cloaks, marks, and bonds are 100% cosmetic. Yes it would be cool to get a resource boost on a cloak or fire resistance on a bond, but Bungie was trying to make sure that class items were, plain-and-simple, cosmetic. From reading your post, I was reminded of the relics from Borderlands 2 and how they would give you health boosts or Damage boosts, but we're never displayed on your character. These boosts on class items would defeat their purpose and lead to a rift in the community. There'd be those who want to look good and those who just want the buffs.

        • Agreed. And some of them are quite expense considering they do nothing. I think the class items could be an excellent way to differentiate your characters. It would also encourage people to seek out different class types for fireteams, with each having a role as you mentioned.
