Why you SHOULD consider buying the Destiny DLC.

So by now, most of you have seen some people come onto these forums and make fools of themselves with these wild theories and post their silly "messiah's" video as their only proof to these theories, and I've honestly been having a cakewalk of laughter here in terms of this, and then they attacked me with words, so now it's time to take the gloves off here and punish them with the truth. They cite a video of why you shouldn't buy the DLC, so it's only fitting that you read my post on why you should buy the DLC packs. So let's get to it. First off, that introduction you read there will be the only bashing I do in this post, I'm done with long rant filled posts that usually catch the attention of some people as pure negativity. This post will have absolutely none of that, I'm only going to present the facts, and discuss them and I'll let common sense take over from there. Personally, I would have done better with my own counter-video, but to be honest, most of you I believe are tired of seeing go to 'x' Youtube page, watch, like & subscribe, so no, I don't want you to do that, just give this a good read. :) So most of you have at least seen a few of my posts or have read them, and some of you may not know everything about me. I run my own independent game development company. I have numerous years of programming experience, as well as experience in design and implementation from some small projects I have worked on or with, so you can trust me when I say that I know how games "work" internally. So, let's start with breaking down the most "shot at" point, which is Destiny's currently lacking story. Some of you know, and others don't know, that the lead writer of the story for Destiny left Bungie shortly after the first E3 trip that Bungie took, where they revealed a video of gameplay and talked about some mechanics in the game. Why he left is unknown to us, but what we do know is that during that time, and the time of the alpha/beta, the story as well as numerous game mechanics were changed. This is something that happens all too much in video games, let's not all forget the days of Halo 2 where we had a trailer of an awesome mission, and that wasn't in the final game. Content and mechanics get cut due to all sorts of reasons. Mechanics such as Trading, Gambling, and others were cut from the final product. The reasons, can only be told to you by Bungie, so I cannot provide it to you, just know that they may have been present before, but are gone now. As for the "amount" of story content in the game, this is where some frustration comes into play by people, but you need to also realize that Bungie had to change the story in about a Year's time, so they may have been running out of said time to get everything they wanted done, this is also something that can happen when you have big name titles, so the developer will polish up as much as they can to release to you. This is where the DLC packs enter the picture. How this works is when a game is nearing completion, the team behind the design will start working on the DLC packs for the game, this is how it always works, and sometimes this content may be put on the game's disk as a placeholder or a template to upcoming content (See DestinyTracker for info), in fact, many of you have already found some of this placeholder content, but if you've actually looked carefully, you'll notice it's not done yet. I think the best example I can provide is the upcoming "awesome" new gun Necrochasm, which is a reward for completing Crota's End on Hard. Have a look at this beauty, but if you look closely, you'll see the noted Cursebringer perk has a template icon in it's place, and there is no 3D model present for this gun. This tells us that the concept design and base stats were placed in the game prior to it going gold, but the actual implementation isn't actually done yet, IE: It's being worked on, sound familiar?
People are working on this content right now at Bungie. It's not finished.
Also, if you personally haven't actually explored some of these areas that have been found, please do so, and tell me what you actually find in there. You'll find a lot of glitches, non-working elements, and even placeholder or template art which is obviously not finalized, so again, as DeeJ best said, the content is being worked on. So all of these threads and hate messages about "Disk Locked Content" are not valid my friends, all MMO style games use the tactic of prior implementation to cut on the design work of the developers, IE: They're making it easier to deliver the content to you, sooner. This isn't to scare you, or some corporate bullcrap, these "pre-designed" areas are in place to get the content to you much quicker. WoW uses this tactic for every expansion they make, and that game is still going strong, and the people don't complain about those areas. So, why are you community, doing the same to Bungie, when they're using this tactic to HELP YOU, the player? It just doesn't make sense to me. The last thing I'd like to address here is something very cool, the fact that those are "placeholders" in the DB of the game files tells me that there's definitely a lot of cool new stuff actually coming to the game. I believe fully, that the "leak" or "rumor" of the third subclass and the content of Crota's End from the anonymous tester is 100% true, in fact, if Bungie was dispatching their Ninja's to "delete it or face a ban", then it kind of points to the fact that it's probably true. So people please, chill out. This is a MMO-Style game that is very early in it's life. We need to be helping Bungie give us the experience we want to enjoy here. They don't want to read hundreds of rant posts and hate all day, they want honest feedback to help bring the experience to you. Bungie employees are also Guardians, they want to have the exciting journey that you're taking part in. Don't take in these hate filled videos with silly theories as truth. Unless the information is directly confirmed as truth by means of Bungie telling us that it is, or by means of us actually seeing it for ourselves, it is nothing more than a personal opinion, which is not true information, which is why we finally reach the end of my discussion, and why I think you'd be missing out on an awesome experience to let one 30 minute video ruin what would be a wonderful expansion to your game. Game on Guardians, and I'll see you in Crota's End in December! Edit: My note on the upcoming content part has been clarified ash55, the post/thread was deleted due to it breaking the rules of the forum, genuine leak or not Edit 2: Too Long Didn't Read People who are posting videos on youtube attacking your decision to buy the DLC are not legitimate because there is no solid proof to what they are providing you with, IE: they're lying to you, or pushing an agenda of their own. You should at least consider buying the DLC's due to the cool stuff we've already seen some templates for in the game's database, and finally, the DLC isn't done yet, it's being worked on right now, so these threads and theories suggesting otherwise are wrong. To All: I do appreciate the select individuals who have provided constructive comments, however the most of you are obviously too hooked on negativity to resort to attacks on me and anyone who disagrees with you, which is honestly an attack on your own credibility. Your "Self-Entitlement" behavior will not be tolerated any more in this thread, if you have nothing constructive to provide, don't bother posting as you will simply be ignored. Opinions the other way will be completely ignored without a solid piece of evidence to back up your claim (Posting a youtube video will not be treated as such). Finally, in no way or form am I required to post a video to make my own point, if you're too lazy to read or at least form a reasonable opinion based on facts, then don't bother posting either. Finally, to anyone who thinks attacking my credibility is a good idea, I guarantee you that it will only hurt you when I press that shiny report button for misinformation, I have provided my credentials many times before, so I don't need to do so again.

  • I already bought it. I have faith that this game will become what was promised. The fact that everyone is on the forums posting negativity and still playing the game shows that they enjoy the game enough to continue playing but really enjoy complaining. If you really hated the game as much as you say you do, then you wouldn't be on the forums and still playing the game. Grow up, be constructive, and understand that nothing is ever set in stone. People make mistakes. Spending your money doesn't guarantee you happiness from whatever you spend it on. I'll be here for the journey we were promised.

  • I always buy the DLC's when I pre-order any game that is of interest to me. Sometimes it pays off other time times it doesn't. Even though Destiny is lacking in content, I still enjoy the game to where I play anywhere from 2 to 6 hours a day. And yes, I have a full-time job and have my social agenda. I also hear the rants, gripes, and raves about GTA V and COD. It seems like today's players just like to complain about everything because they feel they are special and deserve more than what they received. If you don't like the game, take your copy to the nearest Gamestop and trade it for another game and complain about that game. If you downloaded it then, oh well, move on. On the flip-side, I am not sure why other players defend Bungie/Activision. I like the game but I am not going to bat for a company that really doesn't give 2 cents about me or what i think of their game. Money talks and BS walks....I know a little cliche' there.

  • i personally believe that DLC should always be an afterthought. meaning DLC should only be worked on after the game has been released. if the devs dont want to sit around with their thumbs up their collective arses they should only be fine tuning the game's or server's mechanics. and as all my teachers have always said,"if you finish something early double check, if you still have time after that triple check, still more time quadruple check. never hand in something unfinished, unrefined, or sloppy." which destiny most certainly is.

    • Well said good Sir! The first round wasn't perfect, but for me, my playing this game in the future will live or die by the DLC. If they begin to correct the story, I'll keep playing. If not, I won't. For me, it's that simple.

        • I have a question for you about the story. Do you think when the lead writer left, that under some legal reason (maybe writer intellectual property) Bungie couldn't use the full story they orginally planned and had to change it the way they did because of time restraints? My question is not to bash the game but personal and speculative in nature. I love the game so far and have a great group of people that I've met to play with and look forward to the DLC.

            • Pretty much stopped as soon as you called this an mmo. It's not an mmo. It's not even close to an mmorpg. It wants to be an mmo.. it wants very badly and perhaps SHOULD have been an mmo because gamers have been wanting an mmorpg shooter for a long time. Fact is, this game doesn't even come close. An mmo game doesn't force it's players to LEAVE the game world in order to engage other players. Destiny does.

            • Good read, its refreshing to read something that has tangible accuracy and value. Hate to say it bud, but this community has too much of a majority that feeds off of the cons and the unfulfilled self entitled bullshit they wish they had from this game. Whats funny to me is these people are going to go home from work or most are just going to wake up and play the hell out of this game anyway.

              • Good read, did anyone else read through this as Morgan freeman. I'm getting the DLC either way, I like to hunt for achievements and am pretty sure that bungie will have achiements tacked on to their dlc. I label the game as an MMO anyways, even though its not a massive multiplay aspect like WoW or EVE Online, it still has the qualities of one. Expansions are bound to keep the game going, well into Halo 5 and Call of Duty.

Lol at OP. I've never seen such blatant sack riding. You're telling me that if your lead story writer leaves mid project... You just sell the game half finished for full price? Then charge more for content that's already finished? Yes, I've been inside Jovian, and kings watch. Tell me more about how "unfinished" those areas are... Bungie wants honest feedback? Stop treating us like a bank account and give us a full game.

As someone with programming knowledge and immense interest in actual design phase of the game design let me point something out about the campaign and a major reason I say the campaign is crap. The objectives of the campaign are VERY, VERY shallow. Most if not all events in the campaign are 3 objective types with two of them being repeated at nausea. Sword of Crota, A boss that is the same enemy type but with a new paint job, defend a ghost until you clear a zone. A campaign is made on its game play as much as it's story and the repeating ghost events are no excuse whatsoever. Especially when you could of cannibalized world events. why is there no timed events? We have numerous objectives in game that send wave after wave that get stronger with each group cleared. You could have made some of those ghost sections different by cannibalizing these. You could have added a timed assassination or a zone capture event. These are all mechanics that already exist in game! Add some audio triggers with a wave spawn or time based trigger and bam you just easily addressed one of the campaigns main issues. Hell you could have made some strikes more unique this way. Heck they could have made a rush mechanic by making vex gates invincible forcing the player to run the gauntlet or a last stand mechanic by tieing the gates to a timer then using the vex shield wall from the black garden asset to lock them in and also tie that to a timer. This campaign has all the symptoms of a game that was cut up somewhere around the first quarter of the game (about just after the moon happens.) Then people who we're lazy, apathetic or terribly managed re-did the objectives by just taking the same block of code and just filling in the blanks. The lazy uncreative use of assets already in game is what truly shows off how badly this "cutting" was handled. If they were running out of time they shouldn't be putting time into placeholders for future content they should be getting the base product done. Anyone who has done project management would know this, especially if you have an I.T or tech background where deadlines and shipping new "from scratch" products are the norm. Not only that but making the objectives in those missions unique would have probably saved the campaign a LOT of the ribbing it's getting and we likely wouldn't be having this debate. If a mission go's from being just another mission to "the standoff mission" in a players mind that now makes it memorable and each mission has enough uniqueness in it that they don't blend together as easily and become monotonous. People who choose to vote with their wallet are more than justified in choosing not to buy the DLC if they came for a story and I would assume they did if the marketing was any indication.

                    • Instead of writing all the technical details in defense of the DLC (I work with software and I understand a lot of the work needed to release anything on a timely manner), why not just ask yourself the following. Come December, all your friends are playing the shiny new DLC and you are not. Are you really going to stick it out and only play vanilla Destiny? That brings me to the next point: Come December and you are still playing Destiny. Isn't that an indication that you enjoy it and you will probably enjoy the DLC and that the game merits that you get it? I will buy it only if I am still playing in December honestly. I am not going to make a big deal over the nonsense everyone in this community is making it out to be.

                    • The truth about what was and what shall be will likely never be known to the vast majority of us. What is fantastic about economics and the capitalist environs in which we live is that money talks. There is no amount of debate on these or any forums that will change what has already passed. I fully believe that the debate which is had on all forums is weighed by the company, but in no way drastically changes the momentum and vision of the game. Future profits are yet to be determined. This is what I find so beautiful. At present, I can cancel my pre-order, and never purchase any Destiny related content. I could take it even further and never buy another activision product. Bungie/activision has already banked what I have given them. However, we as consumers hold so much power. Time will determine how successful this game is, because of the simple fact that folks will CHOOSE to buy or not. TLDR: fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

                    • I hear you, and partly agree. You see, we will likely never know what really goes on in the run up to these releases. Not even you do sir, only the top and some more subsequent executives at billion dollar company's can tell you for sure. And likely employees can only tell you what flowed down from the board, but would not ever do so if it could sully the name of the company. Now, i could care less about holding back content as long as it is coming. I could care less about some of it actually being on the disc too. What i do care about is the possibility of the game having been chopped and changed to appeal to a younger/wider audience at the expense of depth, complexity, originality, immersion or even art itself. Do you feel this is ok? This also applies to console exclusive content. We are basically getting treated like the kids they want treat in many ways. Regardless, I remain hopeful for the future of this game.

                      • Good read, for starters I like destiny, but the story is a bit lite, and if what you say about the writer leaving just after e3 is true then it does make sense that the story has a bit of a thrown together feel, I will probably be buying the dlc but so e free extra content wouldn't go Amis, even something simple like bigger badder public events, the kind whee you might think twice about joining in for fear of getting pounded, or the ability to tie together multiple patrol missions in a kinda mini quest/story, or even just select the level of difficulty you want to patrol mission to be just like in a story/strike mission, all these additions could be done on the fly with an update which would certainly add value. Keep up the good work bungi xx

Or, I could not throw my money at abhorrent business practices and go spend my money on something worthwhile like Halo: the Master Chief Collection and Titanfall (Which is constantly giving REAL Content Updates....FOR FREE)
Since launch Titanfall has added 3 new game-modes, Horde Mode, the Black Market and have at least 2 more game-modes lined up for release with more probably in development. Destiny on the other hand has permanently unlocked a single on disk event and temporarily unlocked 2 more which equate to just more daily chalanges and then had the nerve to Nerf both of said event's rewards and activities based on the complaints of absolutely nobody. And then when people have actual concerns about PvP balance they can't even fix it without destroying all of PVE
