Legendary gear - 80 materials
Exotic gear - 64 materials
It probably takes an hour to farm 70-100 materials, big whoop right?
But did I tell you it's going to be the most mind numbingly boring thing you've ever done?
Edit: Alternatives,
buy with glimmer or marks
buy with coins or motes
earn via missions; amount scales by difficulty
earn via crucible
Material bounties
Trade weapon parts or class materials for
Earn during patrols and public events
Edit2-update: You know it's boring when your ascendant materials out number your planet materials
451 ascendant materials
182 planet materials
I even have more strange coins than I do planet materials...
Edit3: Math
Will take you 21.76 hours to farm 1,632 materials if you're gathering 75 per hour on average.
To hit level 29 it will take 304 materials if you have one exotic piece.
To hit level 30 you will most likely replace those pieces with raid equipment. That's another 240
(304+240)3 = 1,632
1,632/75 = 21.76
21.76 very boring hours
This is not taking weapons into consideration.

The don't do it. Stop playing game. Go cry elsewhere
-
I watch TV when I farm chests.

Edited by jerkcore: 10/23/2014 4:47:25 PMI don't even think about it. I don't go out of my way to gather mats, I wait for patrol bounties. Sure, I haven't gotten a lot of helium lately, but that patrol bounty will pop up eventually. Don't obsess over leveling up gear, just let it happen naturally.
-
I wish that enemies on dropped the material of the planet you were on. Not all the time but occasionally or maybe and enemies with a yellow health bar would drop them. Something like like could break up the tedious nature if farming materials
-
You need to learn chest spawn locations better. Doesn't even require a guide, just explore and you will pick it up quick. Then run in a circle checking the chest spawns in an area of the planet that works well for you. Keep an eye out for the materials while you are going from chest to chest. double bonus: follow the public events while you farm triple bonus: pick up some vanguard bounties before you head out. quadruple bonus: do it with friends to make it more enjoyable and expedient. I netted close to 100 relic iron in maybe 30 minutes earlier this week (by myself). More than enough to fully upgrade the weapon I was working on. Next time, I will time it out, so I have accurate data when this thread pops up again.

It's worse than mass effect's 2 planet probe bullshit. At least then I didn't have to scrounge around looking for filthy chests in bland copy paste rooms for 1-2 materials.
-
What If xur sold an item that put the materials on your mini map for an hour? Would you buy it?
-
I feel you. Did the math and I need roughly 648 spirit bloom to max out all of my gear. It's slightly annoying but oh well. I gave up on maxing out all my gear and will instead specialize.
-
If you do patrol bounties you can combine the two and get some other stuff from public events. 6 patrol missions don't take that long.

Edited by U Go 6 FT BeLOW: 10/23/2014 4:09:22 PMagreed...need loot raid games where we go after stockpiles that the factions are holding in material banks. Oh wait that wouldnt allow us to take forever to level up our weapons/gear which is all this game has to offer.
-
They need trade material
-
There are places you can get 100+ in an hour. It is grindy and annoying, yes, but do it with a friend and grab some patrols on the way. It makes it a little less annoying.
-
See I used to do all my farming at once. I then realized with how slow most exotics level I can farm the items as I need them. Farming 16 Helium Filaments every day or so, seriously is not as bad as doing 70-100 an hr. I can handle a few sweeps of the moons first area in 15 minutes etc. Seeing as everything takes damn HF.
-
Personally I would've had those items the Speaker sells as a Material Gain mechanic that works with patrol missions. When equipped whenever you complete a mission you get so much material from the world you're on. Draw back is you're not gaining XP for factions.
-
I wish we could trade dismantled mats for something. Hell, i'd even go with 10 to 1 trade for farmable materials.
-
I love farming mats. I pick up a bounty for pat missions on the planet, grab some missions and farm chests. I got 11 mats from one chest three times and I got an ascendant shard from one. Learn a route and just plow man. Not to mention there are public events spawning like crazy.
-
I do patrols also when farming for materials. Take guns with me i want to lv up or use guns that's useless in pvp and pve, thorn or bad juju. Lol

Edited by CONAN9845: 10/23/2014 2:09:28 PMI farm when I'm doing other things, and have decent shared quantities in my vault. It's not a big deal.
-
i cant bring myself to search for spirit bloom anymore today, games been turned off 2 hours before i have to go to work
-
I like to look for public events as well as looking for materials to mix things up. otherwsie you are right it gets rather boring.
-
I actually enjoy farming. I usually save it for taking a break from Crucible if I'm getting too competitive.
-
Welcome to the world of mmo's.
-
Patrols and bounties for rep.
-
meh I'm level 30 on my main and 29 on my alt, I spend an hour a day on a different planet farming as many mats as possible, so that by the time the dlc comes out ill have 600+ of every mat.
