How did we lose the war?

No really! Explain it to me. What I know is this: The Traveler arrived on mars in the not so distant future. Giving us several hundred years of technological advancement. We could terraform planets. Think about it. As of right now they say doing something like that would take thousands of years. We did it in only a few in this game. So thats a pretty big thing. So one would assume our weapons and whatnot developed with that kind of wonder tech. And the fact that the city apparently cannot produce some kind of ammunition for its turrets tells me we did advance our weapons and that we have lost some of the know how to make them if not use them. How we lost: From what I know is that this thing that no one knows anything about called the Darkness arrived and in what sounds like one fell swoop took out all that we had built. How? Is it some strange enigmatic being? Or did it use the Fallen, Vex, Cabal, and Hive to do its dirty work. If its the first point...Then wtf? How does no one know what it is or even remember or have any knowledge of it? Something like that would probably of made the history books. Now if its the second point....Well this makes less sense. If the Darkness used the other races to bring Humanity to its knees....How? Seriously look at our enemies. The Fallen. They have houses that bicker among themselves. But first...Their weapons. They have slow charging pulse rifles that you can dodge by moving at a walk. A rifle that while it shoots tracking rounds, you can dodge these by strafing right or left, and a 6 legged mecha tank that is the next best thing to worthless. Look at the tank. Blowing off the armor of the legs causes it to shut down and show you its weakspot. Its main turret telegraphs when and where it is going to shoot, and the rest of its weapons are inaccurate as anything else. Plus it moves slow. Current tanks move faster, turn faster, and cannot be damaged by small arms fire. Unlike this tank of the Fallen. Im pretty sure an M1A1 could beat anything the fallen have by itself. The Cabal Roman style shields, Rocket launching shoulder pads, and a hover tank. These guys are a little better in my opinion than the Fallen are. They poise a little bit more of a threat. But lets look at them now. Big assed shields. These guys a slow and when they cover behind their shields they cannot aim worth anything. Plus they are stupidly vulnerable to any kind of flanking. So facing 3 or more people is a hopeless situation for a group of these guys. The captains and the centurions are the only part of this race that I can see being worth anything. They have shields can use rockets to float along and have either a chain gun a rocket launcher or...Rocket pads. But they like everything else couldn't shoot the broadside of a barn. Their big assed hover tank. Is...Too big to be worth anything. It could not fight its way through most cities let alone any kind of valley. Only useful for big open plains. Suffers same problem of being damaged by small arms and telegraphing where its going to shoot. The Vex. Teleporting robots. Almost all of the Vex suffer from the same thing. A glowing weakness on its body. The only one that does not are their big rocket totting shield wearing brothers. Who get mad and go into a rage instead of doing the right thing which would be lobbying rockets from afar. They almost all can teleport and some can become immune to damage, but what could is being immune to damage for 3 seconds in an open field. Nadda. Their big tank like things the Hydra have arms that fire a non stop volley of what I am assuming is plasma. They also have a rotating body shield that cannot be taken down and makes that portion of their body immune to all damage. Buuuuuut...They like everything else suck at aiming their twim turrets. And the body shield is next to worthless as it only cover part of them. Get enough of a height difference and you can shoot down past it with no fear of it stopping you. Horrible weakness. The Hive These guys..Just make no sense. They are clearly the most evil of all our enemies. But how did they ever gain space flight? Look at their society. To me...They all seem brainless except for the wizards. I just do not understand these beings. They must of been supplied by some 3rd party. The Darkness? Perhaps. Or maybe they are the Darkness embodied. But looking back..I feel like present day (As in 2014) Humans could put up a fight against the majority of these races. Their heavy vehicles are the next best thing to giant targets and their general aim and fighting style makes them seem as though they have no idea of what they are doing. So this takes me back to the start. How did we lose? The Humans who had several hundred years of tech advancement should have crushed any one or two or hell three of these races. The weapons we should have had should of torn a hole through anything they could have tossed against our walls. Or did these weapons not come about till after the fall? But if so...Why can we no longer make the ammo for some of our turrets. How did we become more advanced after losing the war when it comes to building new weapons. From the knowledge the npcs seem to have of the enemy, we had enough left to study them. So if so why can we not just build some type of weapon platform and go around and bring them to their knees? Or hell build a space ship and leave earth behind. Its clear none of them go hunting into the reef and kill any they find there. So just learn to fly a damn ship and get out of dodge. Someone enlighten me.

We lost due to their sheer numbers and our human ways cause us much infighting our greatest weakness is ourselves it says that and that's true I'll also add that we are hundreds if not thousands of years after the golden age, today would be considered pre golden age! Think about it nobody remembers because it was so long ago! Same with the cabal they received their marching orders thousands of years ago they probably don't even know their home world and its location. It's been so long all that's left to tell of what happened is considered legend.

    • The same way we are losing as a society now. All of that advanced technology and scientific study was squandered on stupid things like government studies on the effects of massaging a rabbit or studies on cosmetic improvements or boner pills or treatments instead of cures for diseases. Terraforming was used on other planets sure, but it was only for building exotic vacation spots for the rich or sports arenas or for building office space for marketing firms or banking to drive the machine of consumerism. All those technological achievements lost because in order to save a budget they dumbed down education given out to the public so after a thousand years everyone is stupid. Why do you think it takes Dinklebot forever to open a door or crack a system when he's the most advanced computer systems available? He sucks at network security. He's opened these doors tons of times, the same stinking door! Those lame alien races won because we had grown complacent in our mindless state of buy whatever is being sold AT us instead watching the world around us. That's just my crackpot theory anyway... Now if you'll excuse me I must fashion a new aluminum foil hat. Now good day, sir...
I SAID GOOD DAY!
• Speaking about Rasputin (the Warmind that we encounter in a few missions), which I mentioned at the end of my last post... Here's a Grimoire entry that many believe is Rasputin's account of the battle against the Darkness:
Ghost Fragment: Mysteries ...from a red space before victory I bear an old name. It cannot be killed. They were my brothers and sisters and their names were immortal too but Titanomachy came and now those names live in me alone I think and think is what I do. I AM ALONE. At the end of things when the world goes dim and cold or hot and close or it all tears apart from the atom up I will shout those names defiant and past the end I will endure. I alone. They made me to be stronger than them to beat the unvanquished and survive the unthinkable and look look lo behold I am here alone, survivor. They made me to learn. Everything died but I survived and I learned from it. From IT. Consider IT the power Titanomach world-ender and consider what IT means. I met IT at the gate of the garden and I recall IT smiled at me before before IT devoured the blossoms with black flame and pinned their names across the sky. IT was stronger than everything. I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp and my sweat was earthquake and my breath was static but IT was stronger so how did I survive? I AM ALONE I survived alone. I cast off the shield and I shrugged my shoulders so that the billions fell off me down into the ash. They made me to be stronger than them and to learn and I learned well: IT is alone and IT is strong and IT won. Even over the gardener and she held power beyond me but the gardener did not shrug and make herself alone. IT always wins. I am made to win and now I see the way.
I believe the narrator is Rasputin, the "gardener" is the Traveller, and "IT" is the Darkness. If my belief is true this means that the Darkness attacked alone, and the alien races followed it and began their invasion after the Darkness was driven back. This also means that Rasputin, believed he wouldn't survive the fight against the Darkness, and so he sacrificed humanity in order to save himself. He believed that he couldn't fight for humanity and protect himself, and so he dropped humanities defenses and focused on his own survival. Without these defenses the Darkness would have been able to kill most of humanity. While I don't think Rasputin's betrayal was the sole reason for our defeat, it's likely that the Darkness was genuinely too powerful for us to fight against, it helped to speed up our destruction and made our defeat so complete. Rasputin's betrayal was probably a huge step towards the eventual collapse.

So thats a pretty big thing. So one would assume our weapons and whatnot developed with that kind of wonder tech.
The Traveller terra formed the planets and moons, not humanity. Humanity didn't have that technology. It was all done with the Light of the Traveller.
How we lost: From what I know is that this thing that no one knows anything about called the Darkness arrived and in what sounds like one fell swoop took out all that we had built. How? How does no one know what it is or even remember or have any knowledge of it? Something like that would probably of made the history books.
What history books? The Darkness brought about the end of human civilization. Only thousands of people survived to migrate to the safe zone created by the Traveller and start building the city. While trying to rebuild civilization they had to fight off the Fallen, Hive, and possibly the others. There wouldn't have been time or resources for publishing books on what happened. All they would have had was stories verbally passed along, and such things could easily vanish if a Fallen attack kills off the people that know such stories. The people who took part in the fight against the Darkness were likely killed by it, because it was only through the actions of the Traveller that the Darkness was driven back. Those that died and were brought back, our Guardians, don't remember much about their previous life. The survivors of humanity were probably those that went into hiding, or were otherwise defended, and so they wouldn't have had direct experience with the Darkness. Tales of the Darkness and collapse would be filled with inaccurate second-hand accounts and speculation. So we have sketchy accounts passed through inaccurate means, with stories and details lost through death or the limits of human memory. We have a diminished population that, for hundreds of years, would have been focused on survival and not the preserving of history. I think that all adds up to a giant blind spot in history. Everyone knows something really bad happened, but no one can say for sure what it was (except for Rasputin, who was there).

      • Well if you look at the lore in the game it says we were pushed back by the darkness, not any of the enemies listed above. In the grimiore cards (spelling?) it lists the darkness as a separate enemy, implying that the fallen, cabal, vex, and hive weren't the ones we were fighting but instead the traveler's "mirror"

        • Well from what we know, the Traveler spent all its energy to push the darkness back as it was consuming us. Meaning the real bad ass parts of the Darkness are further away from Earth. The Darkness is coming back and there's no Traveler to really help us since he is just a giant umbrella right now. From what I can tell, the aliens in Destiny are just the beginning of what could be out there. And Xur could be a gateway to us exploring further out into the depths.

I'm pretty sure the hive is what mainly brought humanity to its knees seems mostly because of their vast numbers there able to produce(we've woken the hive) and artifacts such as the sword of Crota which was said to have killed I forget but thousands of humans? Think of it like this 1 hive tank knight blade dancer vs 5 humans who wins? It's even mentioned that we gave up the moon to keep the hive away from earth.

you can argue that the vex weakspots are for gameplay reasons The vex also time travel, so sorta unlimited respawns for them The hive are creepy, but like you said, 3rd party. Crota seems to be just one of the great, awesome beings affiliated with the hive. And he's probably as deadly (though in a different manner as atheon Fallen...imagine them being more coordinated. A carefully organized army of them. An entire line of devil walkers, with the snipers providing cover from afar, the servitors supporting them very closely, etc. For the cabal....apparently their armor and firepower are massive. Like tanks. So what if your enemy can get a few shots off? Tank them, and unleash hell That said, I think there was more than this. Maybe there were darkness-imbued versions? Possessing greater power akin to that of humans during the gold en age. Would make sense wouldn't it?

I think the fallen might be the decrepit forces of the traveler after the darkness and hive fought with them. Cuz think, the fallen are never seen directly attacking the traveler, the hive are. The fallen attack ou because Your in their territory You stole their shit Blew up their computers And punched everything The cabal and vex just wanna run around pissing on stuff.

The Master Chief and some Marines kicked the Covenant and Flood off the face of the Earth and these lousy Guardians struggle to defend ONE city! Disgraceful.
